The Guilford Technical Community College/GTCC Titans’ women’s basketball team is headed back to the national championship tournament after clinching the Region X title with a 2-point win over Cape Fear CC. The Guilford Tech baseball team will open its 2017 baseball season on January 28-29 with two single 9-inning games with Guilford College. This season marks the 10th year of the Titans’ baseball program and its first in the Division II classification of Region X. The Titans return some experience and high impact players from last season as well as welcome some very talented first-year players. GTCC sophomore RHP Chris Kernen has committed to pitch for the NCCU Eagles. Kernen, who pitched for Sonny Gann at Northwest Guilford, and for Enad Haddad’s Greensboro Reds during the summer, is a hard throwing late-inning reliever. GTCC Titan baseball players Brandon Burkes, Tiger Miller, TJ Wharton, and Dillon Barker garnered Region X accolades on Friday. Brandon Burkes earned 1st Team All-Region honors, while Tiger Miller and TJ Wharton earned 2nd Team All-Region honors. Dillon Barker earned a spot on the All-Defensive team. For the season, Burkes led the Titans with a .361 batting average while racking up 2 home runs and 18 RBI’s. Brandon Burkes hit a walk-off solo home run in extra innings of Game 2 to lead the Titans to a 5-4 victory and salvage not only a double header split, but also a weekend series split with Region X foe USC-Sumter. The win pushes the Titans’ overall record to 19-18 and 12-12 in conference play. Game 1 saw USC-Sumter take advantage of a miserable performance from the Titans pitching staff and go on to thump GTCC by the score of 11-3. The GTCC Titans baseball team split a doubleheader with visiting Louisburg College on Friday afternoon. Game 1 saw the Titans rally by the Hurricanes in extra innings by the score of 5-4. In Game 2, a Titan rally feel just short as Louisburg survived by the score of 7-6. A two-out RBI single by Titan third baseman Brandon Burkes knot the score at 4 in the bottom of the sixth inning in Game 1. The GTCC Titan baseball team opened conference play with double header split with Region X opponent USC-Lancaster on Saturday. USCL held off a Titan rally in Game 1 to hand GTCC its first conference loss by the score of 4-3. The Titans bounced back with a 4-0 shutout win over the Lancers. The GTCC Titans split another double header with Wake Tech Community College on Sunday. The Titans overcame a sluggish start in Game 1 to rally by the Eagles 5-3. However, the Eagles silenced the Titan bats in Game 2 and won 3-1. The split runs the Titans record to 5-3 overall.
