Word coming in this morning:Head football coach Scott Bell stepped down at Smith High School yesterday…Parent meeting called at 5pm for the JV and Varsity football teams and their parents, and the announcement was made then…Looking at a Smith assistant coach to take over as the interim head football coach… (Coach Bell made his decision known to the leaders at Smith, on Sunday evening.) This is our speculation here only, but Coach Bell had some health issues this season, and that could well have been the final nail, that drove home this decision…We wish him the best, in the future,…
The Smith Golden Eagles overcame four turnovers by playing stout defense and winning field position as they bested the Eastern Guilford Wildcats 14-11 at Claude Manzi Stadium in Greensboro on Friday night. The Golden Eagles ground game ate up most of the first quarter. On its opening drive, Smith found holes and burst through a tough Eastern Guilford to get into the red-zone. Unfortunately for the Golden Eagles, they were unable to put the ball into the end zone after marching down the field. It was a battle of defenses at Bill Slayton Stadium on Southeast Guilford’s campus Friday night when the host Falcons took on the Smith Golden Eagles. Smith’s defense was stout, but Southeast’s was effective and made timely plays that led their team to an 11-6 victory. The score was knotted at zero until Southeast scored their only touchdown of the game with 8:59 remaining in the second quarter.
