College Football Corner

Last week was a sorry week for college football.  We only had one in-state ACC team get a victory and that was Wake Forest beating a lame duck North Carolina squad.  The Demon Deacons moved to 7-1 overall and they have the BIG ONE coming this Saturday at home versus Boston College. I heard through a grapevine that the BC Eagles have dedicated the game to long-time Boston coach Arnold Auerbach who died last weekend at the age of 89.

No wonder Red is dead, did you see the size of those cigars he was smoking and he would light one up after each Celtic win and they won 938 times under Arnold Auerbach’s leadership.  Can you imagine if Red had been putting Wacky Tobacky in those blunts?  Every time I saw Red he had a smile on his face.  Who knows?

N.C. State and Duke both lost again and Duke at least had some life in their loss to Vanderbilt.  The Wolfpack has tons of talent but they are playing as bad as any team in the ACC at this crucial stage of the season.  Andre Brown and Toney Baker and all you can up with is 70 yards on 29 carries?  The Pack is stinking up the place and they better come up with some answers in a hurry or can you say 3-9?  Duke has found a bit of offense but their problem is they can’t stop anybody or as Bob Harris says,”I can not comprehend those SEC officials”.

If you take away Wake Forest then the rest of our in-state ACC teams should drive up to the Blue Ridge Parkway and watch the leaves change colors.  I have been told it is just so beautiful in the Fall.  I don’t like nice and pretty, I want to  see somebody kick somebody else’s BUTT.

The Appalachain State Mountaineers have been kicking some rears up in Boone and they took out Furman on Saturday by the tune of 40-7.  ASU is the 2nd best team in the state just an edge behind Wake Forest.  Kevin Richardson rushed 27 times for 173 yards and scored a career-high 4 touchdowns for App State.  David Coulson calls ASU App State in Sunday’s News and Record.

East Carolina has gone on a rampage and the ECU 20-17 win over Conference USA foe Southern Mississippi in OT proves that Skip Holtz is turning the corner in Greenville. The Pirates need to re-build their fan base because after all those years of losing many of the Pirate faithful stopped following the Purple Haze. ECU is 4-4 overall and 3-2 in Conference USA.

The Guilford College Quakers rode the 2 TD passes from QB Josh Vogelbach and knocked off Randolph Macon 14-6.  Vogelbach also became Guilford’s all-time passing leader with 6,010 career yards.  If the Quakers can win 7 games I will jump off the Buffalo Creek Bridge.  Guilford is currently 5-3.  Elon University did not jump offsides and the Phoenix made 10 points in the second half stand up as EU beat CU(Chattanooga) 20-17 in the Southern Conference.

Greensboro College, Winston-Salem State, and Western Carolina all suffered losses on Saturday.  GC fell 35-23 to Ferrum on Senior night at Jamieson Stadium.  The WSU Rams went down 13-3 to the Hampton Pirates of the MEAC.  WCU got thumped by the Wofford Terriers 35-7.

That’s it for this week, are there any Carolina Panther fans left in the house and we say goodbye again to Arnold Auerbach, Joe Niekro, and Trevor Berbick who all passed away last week.

  1. If you want to see someone kick some butt you need to watch SEC football by far the best league in the country, to see how far the ACC has fallen you only need to know that WF is playing for 1st place November that is how weak the ACC is today.

  2. Wake Forest beat one of those Big Name SEC schools OLE MISS, Demon Deacons 27
Rebels 3. The Rebels have fallen on hard times since Archie Griffin or maybe that was Archie Manning that played down South in Mississippi.
