It will be high school hoops at the Greensboro Coliseum tonight with the East-West girls game at 6:30 and the boys game at about 9pm.
Robert Kent will coach the West boys team and Robert is the head coach of the Page Pirates and played HS basketball at Western Guilford. Kent was a college player at Guilford and played on the Quakers NAIA National Championhsip team.
Kent began his HS hoops coaching career at Westchester Academy in High Point and then moved on to Ledford, Southwest Guilford, and then to Page. Kent’s SWG squad won a State 3-A title back in 1996. Kent has paid his dues and deserves to be coaching the West.
Locally the West team will feature Josh Chavis of Dudley, a steady point guard and Mezie Uzochukwu out of Northeast Guilford a forward that can rebound and moves well to the basket.
The girls West team is coached by Woody Wall out of Rockingham County and has Mercedes King from Northeast Guilford, a guard that plays like a small forward and Sierra Little of Dudley, a forward that has a soft touch and uses the backboard to knock down her inside shots.
Let’s go Coach Kent and the local players and hopefully the Gra8ful Coach will send us a report or maybe Big Jim Modlin will pass along an update on the Upstate fellows, Chavis and Uzochukwu. If you’re at the game, no matter who you are, send us your thoughts to the comment box or to durhamandy@hotmail.com.
Congratulations to Coach Kent, the local players, and the entire West team. I was not there to winess it, so I cannot report on the game, but I do know that Coach Kent felt honored to coach the team.
I heard the local kids played well. Uzo, Chavis, King, Little all closed out their HS careers and represented the Triad 3-A Conference with grace and dignity. As for Coach Kent, he should end up the NC High School Hall of Fame for all he has done on the HS level.
