St. Louis stalwart Tory Holt’s high school alma mater Eastern Guilford got past Southwest Guilford 41-21 Friday night in Gibsonville in a game not as close as the score would indicate. An opportunistic Eastern defense forced six turnovers and Gerrod Herbin led the way offensively for the Wildcats with 113 yards on 16 carries. With the win Eastern improves to 4-2, Southwest drops to 2-4.
After a scoreless first quarter Eastern managed to move the length of the field, literally. A 11 play 99 yard drive capped by a 27 yard TD pass from Jason Davis to Jamar Dixon. Southwest though was quick to respond as Darius Little scooted 79 yards around right end to tie the score at seven apiece with 7:43 until intermission.
Following an exchange of punts Southwest went thru a sequence that sabotaged any chance the Cowboys had of winning the contest. First a bad snap on a punt put Eastern on the doorstep and it took only one play for Herbin to score his 2nd TD and then on the next Cowboy possession Josh Morehead stepped in front of pass and went 35 yards to the house allowing Eastern to extend their edge to 21-7 at the half.
In the second half things went from bad to worse for Southwest as Eastern drove 65yards in 7 plays with Gerrods cousin Chris Herbin completing the march with an 11 yard burst thru the middle to make it 28-7. Following a 40 yard FG by Will Gann set up by another Southwest turnover Chris kept the good feeling in the family for Eastern with an interception that lead to cousin Gerrod going the final 26 yards to make the score 38-7 after three periods of play.
During the fourth quarter Southwest salvaged their pride with a pair of score. First Yolandus Pruitt went in from five yards out, then later backup quarterback Cory Brown connected with Darrius Little on a 3yd TD pass to conclude the scoring. Sandwiched between them was another FG for Will Gann of Eastern, this time the strong legged senior connected from 33 yards away.
