The season is about over and we only have five schools remaining in the playoffs so who is going to be the last team left from Guilford County?
Here’s this week’s poll and how the remaining teams stack up and like we said earlier, it is a short stack and getting smaller:
#1)Grimsley(11-1)-Just got past Huntersville Hopewell 41-35 in round one at home and now the Whirlies take to the road for the second round on Friday night at #1 seed West Charlotte(11-1). I was at Grimsley’s practice briefly on Wednesday and they are doing quite a bit this week to simulate WC and their QB Darius Thomas who has thrown for over 46 TD’s and passed for more than 500 yards vs. Charlotte Independence. West Charlotte defeated Huntersville Hopewell 42-7.
#2)Northeast Guilford(10-2)-The Rams survived Eastern Wayne after being tied at 21-21 at halftime. In half number two, NEG put up another 21 points and EW didn’t scratch so the Rams move on with a 42-21 victory and now must be prepared for a very tough and stingy Dudley defense on Friday night. In the regular season NEG stopped Dudley 14-13 at Tarpley Stadium and now the series moves on to NEG’s Bill Bookout Stadium for round number two.
#3)Dudley(9-3)-Dudley’s three losses have been to Grimsley, NEG, and Western Alamance and that is some pretty strong company. Last Friday the Panthers rolled with all-out defense and plenty of offense in their 34-10 win over Currituck County. This week as we all know it is a totally different story when Dudley goes to Northeast. Last year Dudley swept NEG winning in the regular season and in round one of the playoffs at Dudley and this year NEG is going to try and do the same thing.
#4)Southen Guilford(9-3)-The Storm made the move to round two with a convincing 27-15 opening round victory over Eastern Guilford. Runningback Scotty Wayne was very convincing for Southern as he ran for 124 yards on only 5 carries and scored 2 TD’s, one coming on an 85-yard touchdown jaunt. Wayne was ejected for over-celebration and he was due to sit out this week’s game at St. Pauls. SG appealed the suspension and word has it that Wayne has been reinstated and that he will play on Friday evening. Southern will need Wayne to compliment RB William Graves and SG may want to sign up those 12 girls that got kicked out for fighting this week at the Sumner campus if their lawyers can get them back on the bus in time for the game. Those chicks sound like a crazy bunch and if I were SG coach Daryl Brown I would use them on Special Teams. Can you imagine those 12 girls going downfield on kickoff coverage? And how can the ref get you for having too many women on the field in a boy’s game. Sign up those Fightin’ Felines, the bus leaves the school at 2:30.
#5)Western Guilford(7-5)-The Hornets are the surprise team left in the playoffs and they might have one more upset left in them. Last week it was a 49-46 shocker over #5 Harnett Central for the 12th seeded WG squad and now it’s fun time with this week’s trip down to Eastern Randolph. With my memory bank turned up full blast I recall that WG beat Asheboro early in the year and ER got past A’boro 19-7 last Friday. With the old like-opponents in mind WG knows they can hang with ER. The only problem is that the game is at ER. We’ll talk more about that in our predictions tomorrow.
