The girls finished their first round action last night and we almost had a few upsets. The Southwest Guilford Cowgirls pulled out a toughie with a 43-40 win over Sun Valley. Tyisha Bridges led SWG with 21. Southeast Guilford eased past Marvin Ridge 59-50 and Jazz Gibbs led the Falcons with 24. The round two matchup has SEG at SWG on Wednesday.
Northeast Guilford walloped Southern Lee 62-25 and the Rams’ Deandre Murray out-scored SL by herself hitting for 28 points. She topped Southern Lee by three and Shelly Reese added 12 for the Rams. High Point Central went on the road to Matthews and took over Weddinigton 82-66 with Lindsay Brendle having a huge night with 33 points and 11 rebounds for the Black Bison. Eastern Guilford had to go into double-overtime but the home team Wildcats(at Eastern Middle School we assume) defeated Goldsboro 81-72. Freshman point guard sensation Miranda Jenkins was the Top ‘Cat with 33 points. Lashonda Anderson added 23 points and 10 boards.
It was also Ragsdale over South Rowan 51-32 with Meghan Ingram and Lisa Archie having 17 points each for the Tigers. Ragsdale will host Glenn on Wednesday. Grimsley ran their record to (27-0) and had no trouble disposing of Fayetteville Byrd 73-25. The Whirlies were up 15-0 before Byrd got on the board and Grimsley led 23-4 after one period and out-scored Byrd 25-2 in the 3rd quarter. Trumae Lucas led GHS with 15, plus Amber Cook and Krystin Fields came in with 13 points each and Nicole Hargraves had 11 . Grimsley needs some competition and they will get it when South Caldwell(17-9) comes tp the Bob Sawyer Gym on Wednesday night.
The Page Pirates had a fight on their hands early with North Forsyth but they held on and beat the Vikings 51-42 by hitting their free throws in the fourth quarter. Page was only up 8-4 after one period but the Pirates then ran out to a 19-10 halftime lead. Chevena Pickard with 14, Jasmine Gill with 12, and Bijon Fonville with 10 were the Pirates with double-figure scoring numbers. Nini Whitaker chipped in 7 and had several key assists. The Dudley Panthers moved on to round number two with their convincing 76-30 victory over Triton.
A few of our teams fell out of the playoffs last night. Morganton Freedom ended the season for Northwest Guilford stopping the Vikings 63-55, Western Harnett defeated Northern Guilford 60-46 and Hickory pounded High Point Andrews 81-42.
