Virginia Beach, Va. — Greensboro College rallied from a 9-3 deficit to pull within one goal of Virginia Wesleyan (2-2) twice late in the game, but the Marlins scored the game’s last 2 goals and held on, 11-9, on Wednesday night.
Nick Patrone scored 3 goals and passed for 2 assists to lead The Pride (0-4). Neal McKinney and Jordan Drumheller added 3 and 2 scores respectively.
VWC led 5-1 after the first period and 9-3 at the break. The visitors, however, outscored the Marlins 3-0 in the third quarter.
McKinney tallied off Patrone with 11:13 left in the final period, and he then scored unassisted 4 minutes later to make the score 9-8. After a Marlin goal, Patrone recorded an unassisted goal to put GC behind 10-9. VWC posted the game’s last goal for the final margin.
Both teams had 39 shots in the game, VWC won 15-24 face offs and won the ground ball war 46-43.
Matt Leach had 11 saves for The Pride. Jordan Kenney had 4 goals and Tom Skartsiaris had 14 stops for the Marlins.
