Guilford College Men’s Lacrosse Final – Hampden-Sydney 14, Guilford 7

Greensboro, N.C. – Robbie Thomas scored all of his game-high three goals during a decisive 9-2 run in visiting Hampden-Sydney College’s 14-7 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) men’s lacrosse victory at Guilford College Wednesday afternoon. The Tigers evened their record at 5-5 overall (1-1 ODAC) with their third win in four game.The Quakers fall to 2-8 (0-3 ODAC) with their fifth straight loss.

The game was tied at 1-1 late into the first quarter before the Tigers reeled off three unanswered goals in the final 3:14 of the period. Thomas scored his first tally with six ticks left in the frame to give the guests a 4-1 lead.

The teams traded tallies at the start of the second quarter before Kenny Mathison scored with 5:43 before halftime, which triggered a 4-0 Hampden-Sydney run to intermission. Andrew O’Shea and Doug Carpenter scored 23 seconds apart for a 9-2 Tigers’ lead at the break.

Guilford’s Tyler Zivic and Dan Orr sandwiched tallies around Thomas’ third and final score to make it a 10-4 game with 12:11 left in the third quarter, but Hampden-Sydney scored the final three goals of the period and took a 13-4 lead into the final quarter.

Nine different Tigers found the back of the net, including Carpenter, Kyle Jett and Cole Hawthorne, who each tallied twice. Andrew Mahoney contributed a goal and an assist. Phil Hage collected 10 saves and five ground balls in just under 46 minutes in goal.

Joe Dauksis scored the Quakers’ final two goals in the fourth quarter and added an assist for a team-best three points. F.J. Ientile also scored twice. Andrew Vigne played the first half in goal and made six of the Quakers’ 11 saves. Mark Guillen finished between the pipes and had five stops, plus six ground balls.

The Quakers visit league-rival Roanoke College next Wednesday (4/16). The Tigers host Roanoke Saturday (4/12) at 1:00 p.m.
