The Spring Sports Report

I saw baseball games last Thursday, Friday, and Saturday and the combined scores were 57-0. Last Thursday it was SEG over Southern 27-0, then on Friday night Western topped Northern 20-0 and then on Saturday we had Grimsley over Page 10-0.

We talked about the Whirlies and Pirates in a previous post but as mentioned in one of the comment boxes, we still need a score on that Dudley-Smith game from Saturday afternoon at NewBridge Bank Park. Last Friday Asheboro surprised Ragsdale 8-3 in Jamestown and the Tigers have fallen to (15-5) overall and now have 4 losses in the conference. We spoke up top about the WG-NG game out at Western and I have to give Coach Chris Causey credit, he was not trying to run up the score.

It may have ended up 20-0 in favor of the Hornets but Coach Causey was using subs and he did not have his men trying to take any extra bases on balls hit to the outfield as the game moved to the third, fourth, and fifth innings. Coach Causey is doing the right things and his little son as the bat boy is a good deal too, as he does his work among the Hornet players. Northern was right there with Reidsville last Thursday tied at 6-6 in the sixth before losing 7-6 in the bottom of the seventh. The WG-NG JV game was 12-10 Hornets in a tight one that showed some promise for Northern.

Southwest Guilford won out over Reagan 7-2 on Senior Night with Blaine McCraw picking up the win for the Cowboys. Brett Underwood hit a big home run for SWG and the Cowboys are in the midst of locking down second place right beind Glenn in the Piedmont Triad 3-A conference. SWG improved to (12-7/5-2) with the win and Glenn is still on top but watch out for SWG. Right behind SWG should be WS Parkland and then would come Reagan with WS Carver and HP Andrews bringing up the rear. If these numbers are wrong please give us a yell.

Eastern Guilford got past Reidsville last Friday 2-1 with Tripp Gardner gettig the win going 7 innings, giving up just four hits and striking out 7 Ram batters. Justin O’Ferrell, Jerreth Thomas, and Yordan Perez were the Wildcat leaders at the plate. NEG pickep up a win over HP Andrews 8-6 last Thursday.

We will check on today’s schedule and try and get that Dudley-Smith score for you and blog in those items later this afternoon.

We got the word on the Dudley-Smith game from Ray Crawford Sr.:

The score was Dudley 5 Smith 1 . The rain did slow the game down somewhat. The play of the day came in the bottom of the 5th inning with Dudley leading 1-0 the lead off batter Ruben Torellas got a hit and stole second base, then Smith intentionally walked Frankie Johnson the next batter, then Ray Crawford II hit a 3 run home run over the left center field wall at New Bridge Park, it was nice.

*****Last year it was Doug Sigmon and this year Ray Crawford II knocks one out for Dudley at NewBridge Bank Park.*****

  1. The guys at SWG played a great game on Fri. night. Underwood had a double to start the game and eventually score the first run on a sac fly by Jeremy Hall. He didn’t have the homerun…that was soph. Brock Hudgens. Will Kellam had a big hit as did Jeff Gilley and Nick Amador. Ethan Ogburn came in to close the game out and looked really sharp on the mound. SWG plays a double header on Tuesday at SW against Andrews and finishes conference play Thursday night at Glenn.

  2. You are right, Hudgens got the homer and Underwood the double. The way I was reading the totals off of my stats sheet from Sunday it was showing up the other way around. Thanks for the update best of luck to the Cowboys as they work to catch Glenn.

We still say as we have all year, down the stretch with McCraw and Paulino they(SWG Cowboys) are going to be tough……

  3. Andy,
Will the Grimsley-East Forsyth baseball game be broadcasted on the radio tomorrow?
