Grimsley won out over Dudley over at Dudley on Saturday afternoon. The game was set to roll at 4:30 but it got going at 5pm and I had the chance to stay for the first inning and then I had to leave for a Hoppers game. I did have a phone call-in system set up where I was getting reports from the field and here’s what I saw and heard about the game.
In the first inning Grimsley jumped out in front with a 3-0 lead but Dudley came up with 2 runs of their own to cut the lead to 3-2 after one complete inning. Grimsley raced out to 5-2 lead but Dudley battled back and cut the lead to one before Grimsley blew open the contest with three home runs in the top of the third inning. Matt Nettesheim hit a three-run homer, Gabe Dimock hit a solo home run and then George Carter hit a solo shot to put Grimsley up 11-4.
Dudley closed to make it an 11-6 final and the Whirlies Kevin Rose picked up the win to go (2-0) on Saturdays. Rose was the winning pitcher when Grimsley beat Page 10-0 at NewBridge Bank Park last Saturday afternoon. Frankie Johnson took the loss for Dudley but he went 3-4 with two doubles at the plate, while Ray Crawford was 2-4 with two doubles and Doug Sigmon went 1-4 and drove in three runs.
It has been a busy stretch for Dudley(15-5) in the last week with their 5-3 win over Western Alamance last Wednesday, the 16-14 win over Northern Guilford on Thursday, and the Panthers’ 8-6 victory over Northeast Guilford on Friday. Tevin Neal got the win for Dudley at NEG. Dudley still has Western Aalmance on their schedule for today(Monday) but that game may get booted because of the rain.
As far as the Saturday Grimsley-Dudley game goes, I wonder what it would have been like if senior Rubuen Torellas could have been on the mound for the Panthers? I’m not sure what the pitching rotation looks like these days and I do know that both teams have their conference tournaments starting later this week. Fot the part of the game I saw on Saturday, both teams were hitting the ball hard and I did see Ray Crawford’s double to right and Grimsley was very active on the bases the first inning.
Grimsley(16-5/7-2) has one more regular season game with the Smith Golden Eagles coming to visit the Whirlies on Tuesday.
The regular seasons are ending and the conference tournaments are getting started this week. East Forsyth is the top team in the Metro 4-A with Grimsley second and Northwest Guilford third. In the Triad 3-A; Dudley, Western Guilford, and Rockingham County are up near the top with Northeast Guilford, Western Alamance, and Bartlett Yancey in the middle. In the Mid-Piedmont 3-A Southeast Guilford is unbeaten and #1 while Ragsdale, Randleman, and Asheboro are in the midst of a second place fight and Southwestern Randolph is coming on strong. In the Piedmont Triad 3-A conference Glenn lost to Reagan last week but the Bobcats are still at the top with the Southwest Guilford Cowboys at number two and WS Parkland and Reagan hanging in at third.
This will be a hectic week with all of the tournaments and if you hear of or get any more news please send it our way. We might just see Grimsley vs. East Forsyth, Dudley vs. Western Guilford, Southeast Guilford vs. Ragsdale, and Southwest Guilford vs. Glenn before this week is over.
