Dudley @ Page : Greensboro HS Football Championship

This is it, for all the Greensboro (proverbial) marbles.

Page comes into the match up riding out their first L of the season in a heart wrenching loss to Ragsdale. Dudley comes in beating up on arch rival Smith (even though they are getting better, they are still the Triad’s mop). Everyone knows about Dudley’s defense and how big, fast, and physical they are. But, Page has the potential to move the ball on them. With speedy athletes in the shotgun spread offense.

Big question marks are that Page QB Will Newman sat out the later part of the 4th quarter against Ragsdale with a Grade 1 concussion. He did not practice on Monday, but is supposed to on Tuesday and he is probable to play on Friday. As well as Page’s starting RB Lenny Gordon having some sort of shoulder injury, he was pulled out of the game against Ragsdale, early in the 1st quarter. I have some insight on his injury. He said that it is not serious, but he has a small chuck of his collar bone missing… and that it really happened a few months ago, but he reaggravated it on Friday. He should play this Friday, but he did sit out of contact drills in Monday’s practice.

Keys for Dudley will be to not turn the ball over and play to their strengths, Page will be looking to exploit the defensive secondary. Dudley will also need to limit the penalties, sometimes they get over aggressive and get holding calls or flags for stuff like roughing the passer or late hits.

Keys for Page will be to play ball control and basically play mistake free. They will need to play a perfect game to knock off the Panthers. The Page defense will need to stop the Dudley running game and contain QB Ricky Lewis Jr. Page will also need to stay healthy this week during practice and during the game on Friday.

You also have to think about Page’s all-state kicker, Matt Millisor. As well as the kicking game in general for both teams. Matt will put the ball into the end zone on kick offs and punt the ball 45-60 yards when he has to. Dudley usually doesn’t have a strong kicking game, and in the past has been their downfall against Page. In 03, Page won 14-13 because of a missed PAT, and last year Dudley won 20-14, get on TD and Page potentially wins. Having a kicker that can boom 50 yarders could help late in the game, in field goal tying or winning situations.

Here is a quote from a Ragsdale fan:
“Going forward Ragsdale takes on their nemesis Grimsley who they haven’t beaten since the Reagan years and Page bounces back for the big showdown with Dudley. While Page came up short tonight, after watching the Dudley/Grimsley game, Page can beat Dudley. Not saying that they will but they can. Page has the team speed to play with Dudley”

This game has all the makings to become a classic. It’s one of those Greensboro Rivalries where each team wants it just as bad as the other. (I.e. Page/Grimsley, Dudley/Smith, Grimsley/Dudley, Page/Dudley)
