Takin’ it to the Cornhole III

There was a big Cornhole tournament up at Omega Sports on Battleground Avenue a few weeks back on a Saturday afternoon and I just happened to be walking by the site as I was headed down BG Ave., on my way to the Cookout to pick up the food for the crew at Battleground Automotive.

I wrote up the tournament for GREENSBOROSports.com and we have had a few responses and here’s Heath’s thoughts on the Cornhole Craz that’s taking over our area. At the Brass Taps Bar on Battleground they claim to have the best Cornhole in town. I saw their boards the other day and they do look OK but they have two boards, and that is it.

Cornhole will go over big in this town and anywhere for that matter because it is so much like horseshoes, but it is lighter and cleaner. Horseshoes stinks after a big rain and you have muddy water in the pits and rusty horseshoes. Cornhole has bags and boards and it works.

What we also need around here is a home version of “The Hole in the Wall” reality show on FOX TV. What I really want to see us get off of the ground locally is a show called, “Hit Me in the Head with a Hammer.” Who can take the hardest hit to the head with a hammer. Start out easy and then make major contact, until the lights go out.

Let’s stop there for now and get our licks in later when, “Hit Me in the Head with a Hammer”, makes it’s way to television.

Here’s Heath on the Cornhole tournament:
I participated in this tournament. I believe that they had about 35 teams to play in this tourny. My buddies won the 1st place prize. There were a few issues with the Omega tourny. Restrooms were not easily accesible, and refreshments were hard to come by as well, other then Cookout. We have been racking our brains to increase the amount of tournaments in the Greensboro area.

We play in some of the bigger tournaments in Charlotte and Spartanburg, but would love for someone host some big ones in Greensboro. I could help out with format and seedings if needed. With the right venue, same bags and boards and prize money, it could possibly bring in teams from Asheboro, Albermarle. Charlotte and other surrounding cities…

I highly recommend ACO(american cornhole organization) bag and boards as it offers the most consitent play for everyone. Let me know if anyone has any ideas or comments. Lets put Greensboro on the Cornhole map!!!

  1. The Elks had a Cornhole tourney on Labor day Monday for the last day of the pool. I expected 8-12 teams and ended up with 28 (i think). A father daughter team won upsetting what most thought were the two easy favorites. We will be making some “house boards” for next pool season and are contemplating an in house (sorry Heath) tournament for a fundraiser. It is a lot of fun. Youtube it for more info. There is a “mockumentary” and a Cornhole song. Unbelievable!

My 8 year old son and I participated in the Omega Tournament with an early exit but he scared some beer drinkin 20+ year olds! Fun. Which then led to the aforementioned Elk event which will lead to more this fall and next year at Elks. I hope. Easy to make, easy to learn, easy to play, harder to be good!

  2. i like that game called hit andy in the head with a hammer or better yet hit andy in the cornhole with a hammer

  3. They will be playing that tune, “Hit Me With Your Best Shot”, in the background. I can hear it and feel it now.

I will give you a call in the next day or so.

Dont be sorry. I completely understand. What kind of fundraiser? I would love to still be able to come and watch if possible. I enjoy watching, playing, and helping others improve thier game… Its a wonderful game, and would love for as many to enjoy it as much as I do myself.

I’v had the chance to throw with the nations top Cornholer, Matt Guy, and have played against some of the nations top players. There are a lot of people that dont know about this wonderful game, and the ones that do, do not realize that there are tournaments going on. I know that Greenboro has some wonderful players, just got find them…

  5. I think the show would be a smash hit. (drum roll please) If contestants are crazy enough to participate, I would be crazy enough to watch…

  6. I think Pat Benatar and her drummer Cecil Carr would both say, “Just Bring It Corney”.

Could be a good promotion in the works.
