Weekend Baseball Roundup of D1 Local College Players and Teams‏

Tony Sutphin reporting:

Here is a rundown of local D1 school and players and how they did on the opening weekend.

UNC – Swept VMI and some local boys did major damage – Dustin Ackley(N. Forsyth) went 9 for 13 and is hitting .692. Ben Bunting (Randleman) went 4-11 and is hitting .364, Greg Holt (W. Forsyth) went 1-4, and Levi Michael went 2 for 10 for the weekend. Levi seemed to struggle a little hitting but I witnessed how smooth he is in the field on Sunday at the new park – he is a big time glove and I am sure he will continue to improve with the bat – he looked very comfortable playing at that level!!

LSU also went 3-0 for the weekend, and Tyler Hanover got his first start on Sunday at 2b, for the weekend he was 1-6 with a triple.

Clemson also started 3-0, with Addison Johnson (N. Forsyth) leading the way going 4 for 12 for the weekend.

Wake Forest had a great 4-0 start – With Mike Dimock (Wesleyan) getting the Sunday start, going 5.1 innings with an era of 3.38, Zach White (N Davidson) pitched 3 scoreless innings of relief for the Deacs.

UNCW Swept Maryland (who cares we beat UNC in hoops) this weekend – Cameron Cockman (SE Guilford) got his first start at 3b on Sunday, going 1-4, Tyler McSwain (Randleman pitched 4 scoreless innings of relief, Aaron Jones (Grimsley) did not get in yet.

USC Upstate went 1-2 this weekend, but the Southeast boys – Austin Moyer and Jeff Medley had good opening weekends. Austin got the start against Va Tech on the hill lasting 3 plus innings, but on Saturday he was the DH and he went 3-4 with a bomb!!! Jeff Medley was in starting lineup all three games and went 3-12 for the weekend.

NC A & T – was swept by Campbell – but a lot of local guys got action – Eric Chiz (East Burke and GBC) went 1-1, CJ Beatty (Glenn)went 3-9, Nick Rogers (NW Guilford) went 4-13. Lester Rivenbark (Grimsley) went 3-10, Esterlin Paulino (SW Guilford) pitched 2.1 innings of scoreless relief. Blaine McCraw pitched 5.2 innings in his first start and has a 3.18 era. Ruben Torellas (Dudley) pitched 1.2 innings in relief, and Nick Boles (GBC) got a Saturday start against a great Campbell team.

My guys from Liberty went 3-1 this weekend in winning the Coca Cola Classic in Alabama – Coach Schnabel emailed me today all pumped up about their great start!!!! Go Flames

UNCG was swept by #18 Kent State – Warren Slack (SW Guilford) was first reliever in on Friday going 3 innings and giving up only 3 runs to a mashing lineup for Kent St. Michael Wall (N Forsyth) went 4 – 12 for the weekend, Blake Hassebrock (SW Guilford) pitched some in relief and Wes McBride (W. Forsyth) also got some relief innings during the opening weekend.

UNC Asheville was swept going 0-4 but Cat Carter (Ragsdale) leads the team in hitting going 6-15 for the weekend. Ryan Dull (E Forsyth) got the start on Saturday, lasting 6 innings in his first college outing.

Elon won 2 of 3 against a great Auburn team and shortstop Neal Pritchard (Asheboro) went 1-12 in the three games.

Army won 1 of 3 this weekend with Clint Moore leading the way – going 5-13 with a triple and HR and flawless defense at Shortstop for the Black Knights, There must have been 25 friends and family there to see Clint on Saturday evening – everyone loves Clint and for good reason – he is a great player and great person!

I will try to get some high school scrimmage coverage in this week.

*****Excellent job again by Tony Sutphin. It means a lot to be able to keep up with the local kids and see their names as they compete on the collegiate level.*****
