On the heels of losing game two of their best-of-three series with Fairmont, the Fighting Phoenix rallied in Saturdayâ€™s nightcap and whipped the Tornadoes, 16-3.
McMichael, now 22-6, will square off with Patton High School in the NCHSAA 2-A State Championship this weekend.(The Dudley Panthers defeated Patton in the Grimsley Easter Tournament championship game in 2008. Patton High School is located near Morganton.)
Patton defeated Mount Pleasant in its best-of-three, winning game one 12-5 and game three 3-2. Mount Pleasant won game two, 4-1.
The McMichael-Fairmont game was decided in the third inning as the Phoenix exploded for 12 runs. The Tornadoes used three pitchers, committed four errors, faced 16 batters and gave up a grand slam.
The McMichael-Patton series, also a best-of-three, will be played at Doak Field on the campus of North Carolina State University. Game-times have not been determined, but play will begin at 5 p.m. Friday.
Doak Field will also host the 4-A title game between Sanderson and either North Davidson or Ardrey Kell.
