Changes within the Southeast Guilford baseball program

I had it confirmed this afternoon. Coach Coble has decided to leave the baseball program. SEG is currently taking applications for the head coach’s position and they hope to have a new head baseball coach in place by the end of the current school year.(June 12th)

I am hearing talk that Coach Lynn Coble has stepped down as the head baseball coach of the Southeast Guilford Falcons.

This would be a shocker to me and a HUGE loss to the Southeast Guilford community. Coach Coble has done an excellent job and he knows how to work with those young kids at SEG.

He took the Falcons to the State Championship game back in 2007 and led them to the Conference Championship game again this season.

If this is the case, he will be missed by all and I hope that maybe he would change his mind and stick around, but if he is leaving, we wish him the best, because he was a good fit for Southeast Guilford Athletics and SEG baseball in particular.

Coach Coble was a great people person and he knew how to get the best/most out of his kids.

  1. Some from within SEG, a few from outside the State and others from around the area.

Many feel the JV coach, Charles Doak, deserves a chance.

Coach Doak’s JV Falcons won the conference this year and also in 2008.

The Metro 4-A Conference(If that’s what they end up calling it) title should come down to Western Guilford and Southeast in baseball next year with Dudley in the mix.

WG and SEG cause Grimsley, Page Smith and unless Dudley can get more pitching, they can’t keep up with WG and SEG and Southern Alamance is a sleeper…….

There is a possible conference baseball title waiting out there. Does it or will it belong to WG?????

  2. Coach Doak definitely deserves a shot at that job. He works great with kids, especially the ones that work hard for themselves, are competitive, and care about improving their own skills as well as trying to win games. He cares about the kids not only for their on the field skills, but their off the field character, grades, and school work.

Coach Coble will be sorely missed in the SEG dugout. Let’s hope Coach Doak will have the opportunity to carry SE Baseball in to the future.

  3. Jason Simmons would do a fine job at SE. He is the most knowledgeable coach in the area. Please consider him.

  4. These Grimsley parents kill me. I’ve read their complaints for a year now. What many of them fail to realize is some of those boys can’t play dead in a Western. And that is after watching their varsity and JV more than once. I listened to their complaints in the stands and realized how little a few of them understood about the game. Everything was great when players were transferring in to play but now that you have to play with your own it gets a little tougher. Funny how when transfers were transferring IN, transfers were not a problem. But now that kids are fleeing to other schools suddenly it’s not acceptable. Short of Dimock, Taylor, Rose plus a couple of freshmen they did not have much on varsity. And even Rose had limited PT as a JR. And the JV squad was weak. Truth hurts.

  5. Coach Coble’s wife is getting ready to have another baby and he needs to be with his family at this time. Good call on the part of the Coach and a strong family man.

Grimsley be careful what you wish for.

  6. Congratulations to Coach Coble and his wife. They’ll be other coaching jobs but kids come once.

  7. After giving this some more thought another coach that may play into the picture could be Coach Jeff Carter at Southern Guilford.

Coach Carter is a former SEG assistant baseball coach and he is well thought of in the Southeast community. Coach Simmons at Grimsley was Coach Carter’s assistant at Southern in 2008.

Another name that came to mind is former SEG player and one-time assistant Bret Garrett.

You would think Coach Doak would have the inside track since he is currently closest to the program.

  8. I am hearing this afternoon that Charlie Gamble Jr. formerly of Southern Guilford in high school and then N.C. A&T as a college player might become a candidate for the SEG baseball job.

Charlie played for SG, N.C. A&T, and in the Houston Astros farm system and wants to get into teaching and coaching on the high school level. He told us a couple of years ago in an exclusive interview with Greensborosports.com that he would some day like to teach and coach on the collegiate level.(Charlie is working these days for Scott Bankhead at the North Carolina Baseball Academy.)

Charlie’s dad coached at Southern, played at Elon as an All-Conference catcher and he also played at Southeast Guilford all the way back in high school.

If you put Charlie Jr. and Charlie Sr. together on a coaching staff at SEG that would be quite a pair.

Looks like we now have some very impressive candidates for the head baseball coaching position at SEG and Coach Doak still has the closest ties to current system.

  9. I would love to see Coach Matanzo, one of Coble’s assistants, get the varsity coaching position at SEHS. Not only does he have a track record that speaks for itself, he has already developed a great relationship with the returning players. In my opinion, respect plays a very important role in a coach/player relationship. Unfortunately I’ve not seen much evidence of that with Doak. While Coach Doak may have brought the JV Falcons to a conference championship, I don’t believe he is ready to take on the responsibilities of varsity baseball coach. Yes, he may love the kids off of the ball field and he is a wonderful man, but that is not all it takes to make a successful team. We have a history of success at SEHS that should continue. I pray that God sends us a Godly man with the ability to achieve a state championship and the connections to assist the upcoming players with college recruitment. We have a program full of prospects!!!! I respect Coble for his decision. Congrats Coach Coble!!!!!

  10. francis i know who dimock and rose are but i don’t know the taylor kid. are you talking about the taylor kid that quit a couple years ago that was a catcher behind dimock we didn’t have anyone else named taylor. are you just messing with us poor old grimsley fans. btw, the taylor kid had a great write up in the news and record a couple weeks ago for his cub scout project

  11. I HAVE READ ALL THESE COMMENTS BUT HAVE NOT HEARD THE NAME OF ALAN ASHKINAZY OR FROMER SEHS BASEBALL COACH KEVIN CALLAHAN. ALAN HAS COACHED MOST OF THE KIDS AT SEHS SOMETIME THUR THE BATTING CENTER TRAVEL TEAMS OR PLEASANT GARDEN BASEBALL HE IS THE BEST COACH THIS AREA HAS TO OFFER.I GUESS THIS IS JUST WISHFUL THINKING HE PROBABLY DOES NOT NEED MORE DARMA AFTER GRIMSLYS POOR DECISIONS TO STAND BY THE COACH THAT WAS GOING TO LEAD THEM TO A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP. ALSO YOU HAVE TO LOOK AT CALLAHAN,S RECORD AND HIS TRUE LOVE OF THE GAME. DO YOU NOT THINK GIVEN THE CHANCE TO COACH SEHS AGAIN AND WITH THE TALENT HE WILL HAVE RETURNING HE WOULD SWEEP THE CONFERENCE NEXT YEAR AND MAKE A STRONG RUN AT THE STATES. I GUESS IAM JUST DAYDREAMING

  12. I don’t think Guilford County Schools is going to be to interested in hiring a travel team/not faculty/non school employee coach anytime soon after the Northern debacle. Alan’s knowledge of the game is unquestionable.

    Callahan???? hmm, interesting.

  13. I don’t think you will find a more dedicated candidate to the program than Coach Doak. I have driven by and seen him working on the field during the week and weekends. My child has even says he checks on their grades and behavior in school. He has high expectations for his players. With his knowledge of SE and experience working with Coach Coble, it seens there is no doubt who should step up to the plate next! You have our vote Coach!

  14. I’ve not heard anyone comment on Doak’s ability to coach at the varsity level. Loving the kids and checking on their school performance has nothing to do with coaching at a game. Maybe if he could have had a few more years with Coble it would of helped. He’s a great man but doesn’t appear to have what it takes to handle the game at the varsity level. Southeast has got to maintain the level of coaching that we have had in the past.
Has anybody thought about what would happen to the JV program if Doak gets varsity coach? Just a thought.

  15. Curious SE Concerned Parent,

what does he not appear to have in your opinion?? I think he has baseball knowledge, a strong desire to put his team in a position to win games. I think he knows the game strategy very good. I think he recognizes talent that is going to help the team in the future and knows that it takes working out on your strength, agility, and skills all year long…not just during baseball season and not just at the school team practices. I am not saying you are right or wrong, I’d just like to hear the specifics in your opinion instead of being generally vague.

As for the JV program if he gets the varsity position, they would need to find a suitable coach for that.

  16. COACH DOAK HAS DONE A GREAT JOB WITH THE JR.VARSIITY. BUT SOUTHEAST MUST HIRE A COACH THAT IS PREPARED TO MAKE A RUN AT THE STATE TITLE NEXT YEAR. WE NEED A FULL TIME BASEBALL COACH THAT HAS DONE IT AND SEEN IT BEFORE. DOAK IS A FOOTBALL AND BASEBALL COACH IF HE IS NOT READY TO GIVE UP FOOTBALL THEN HE SHOULD PULL HIS NAME. THIS IS HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL GET REAL. THE BEST COACH THAT THE A.D. CAN FIND NEEDS THAT JOB……………………………………………………………………………………………………..

  17. this is a tricky situation… and the administrator for the school is leaving. something will have to go down soon. southeast is a hot bed for baseball and someone that truthfully knows what they are doing baseball wise needs to be hired. also if someone is going to be hired they need to teach at the school so there are no more Northern incidents. this will have to be taken up with the A.D. at SE and the administration. so the next question is does the A.D. know what to look for in a qualified head coach or is he going to give it to someone who is just the next person in line and the kids feel comfortable with. thats where the questions need to go is to the A.D. and how he sees it all. Him and the administration make the final decesion. SE is a great place make sure you all keep it that way, and hire the right coach!

  18. Have any of these other coaches applied or is the AD just looking at Coach Doak? Who is on the short list? Who has interviewed?

  19. Coach Doak, Brett Garrett, Charlie Gamble Jr. and maybe even former Coach Kevin Callahan if he is interested in getting back into the fire, are looking at this job.

We should know something by Friday and Coach Doak is very interested and he is the only in-house candidate unless Coach Callahan comes into the mix………

All these men are good potential choices and if anyone knows of an ace-in-the-hole that we have left out as a possible candidate let us know.

How do the SEG faithful see this playing out?????
