HS Hoops tonight

Among the games on tap tonight include:

Mt. Zion at Greensboro Day School(6-0) start for the Bengals….

Grimsley at Northwest Guilford(First game for both teams. If they are on their game NWG girls could win this one by 25, and the Whirlie boys can run and get to the basket with Williams attacking it, Sweeney protecting it and Gourley filling it up from the outside. The basket is a home, NWG hoop and we will see if that makes any differnece….)

Durham Hillside at Dudley(Dudley scrimmaged UNC JV’s at the Dean Dome last week.)

Ragsdale at Eastern Guilford(EG topped NEG last Saturday and game one for Tigers….EG’s Brandon had 26 versus NEG back on Saturday and the Tigers will have to get a man on him and stop his progress/movement into the lane. As the old coach used to say, we need to get a body on that man, #26 Hairston…..)

Northeast at Western Guilford(Game one for the Hornets and WG has two former NEG players in Antwan Wilkerson and Mike McCleese, but NEG should hold their own with the Rams going 10 deep. Benjamin and White lead Rams…The difference maker should be if WG can take advantage of the inside where they should have a decisive advantage….)

Trinity at Southern Guilford(Horne and Inman lead SG girls….)

Southern Vance at Smith(Smith girls loaded, with the guys, don’t know a thing.)

Southeast Guilford at Asheboro(SEG will be missing Cobb, Artis and Becton from last year’s team and Asheboro has one the area’s top guards in Saegan Hilliard.)

Oak Ridge at United Faith

Surry Home Academy at Caldwell Academy

*****We will continue to talk more and more about these games as the season advances, but we don’t want to lay all of our cards on the table on the first semi-full slate night, although the temptation is always there….*****

+++++One footnote:The word on the street in High Point is that HP Andrews guard Corban Collins injured his knee and will be out for the season. Huge loss for Coach James Abell and the Red Raiders…..+++++

  1. It looks like the BIG THREE for Northern Girls came through. Kelly Tessitore 21, Samantha Coffer 11 and Molly Tahmaseb 10 help Northern squash Lexington 77-18. It looks like the Knighthawks will have no competition this year since we do not have to face Dudley any more.

  2. That is a tough three Kelly, Samantha and Molly. I wonder how the younger Coffer, Amanda, did?

Let’s hope we get to see a NG-NWG matchup this year like we did at with the two meeting at NWG last season.

Eastern Guilford’s girls will provide some comp for Northern once the Wildcats get their game rolling and they usually do come conference time……

  3. Looks like NWG will have to play some Defense against the run and gun Whirlies. I think NWG will be up for the challenge and they have a few kids that are stepping up this year as starters. Could be a pleasant surprise for NWG fans.

  4. It’s pretty simple math-the “real & original big 3” have never been beaten by Northern & probably won’t get a chance to meet this year since Smith will most likey win in 2nd round of the Lil 4 against them. In addition, no state play-offs because they are 3A.

  5. Smith will most likely beat NG? That’s a big assumption. NG beat Smith by 9 first go-around and Smith had to go to OT to beat NG only by 4. I think it’s a toss up. Both teams are returning all players and both teams have improved since their last meeting. I think it maybe a NG/NW match up

  6. Imagine if Dudley and Eastern Guilford girls were in the Pizza Hut Classic versus Greensboro Day or one of the other schools? Or image if they added those two how much of a better tournament it would be. Both teams always goes pretty deep in the State Playoffs. Are there any arguments or disagreements with this assessment?

  7. Are you talking bout the same EG that lost to NE the other night? I agree with the Dudley comment. But from the talks they aren’t very deep and playing 4-A may not be enough once playoffs begin. but we will see. NG won tonite in SC beating conference champs and regional state champs Battery Creek 76-37. The score was 45-14 at half. Sam Coffer had a big night with 30pts. Kelly had 15 and V. Hayes pitched in 5pt 9 rebounds. I like when spectators don’t expect them to do well. They will show it on the court.
