REYNOLDS — Both head coaches were in agreement. The Reynolds defense played a special game Friday night.

The Rockets gave up just one touchdown and held on for a 9-7 win over Mount Tabor at Dalton Stadium to earn a berth in the NCHSAA 4-A West Regional final.

The No. 4-seeded Rockets will play on the road next week against No. 2 Dudley Greensboro.

“The defense was incredible against a very good offensive football team,” said Rockets coach Shane Laws, whose program is in the regional final for the first time since 2002.

“That may have been the best we played all season against a team that can do so many things against you. They stepped up big-time tonight.”

Mount Tabor coach Lamarr Marshall agreed.

“They’ve got a very good overall football team, especially their defense in holding us to seven points,” he said. “I don’t think that’s happened all year, in fact I know it hasn’t.”

Unlike last week when the Rockets (12-2) scored all of their points in the fourth quarter to rally for a 25-16 win over Alexander Central, they controlled this game from the start.

The Rockets scored all of their points in the second quarter to take a 9-0 halftime lead.

Austin Pelle’s 22-yard field goal accounted for the first points. The Rockets’ lone touchdown came on a play called 99 Rocket.

On third and 7 from the Mount Tabor 18, quarterback Caleb Pressley took the snap and flipped the ball casually to Okoye Porter, the backup quarterback who was lined up as a flanker on the left side. Porter took it like he was going to run around the right side as Pressley drifted out of the play.

Porter stopped and looked left and Pressley then turned up the field with nobody near him. He took a pass from the sophomore on about the 4 and easily ran into the end zone to give the Rockets a 9-0 lead with 1:52 left in the half.

“The right wrinkle at the right time got us in the end zone,” Laws said.
