GREENSBORO, N.C. – Guilford College’s 105th recorded football season kicks
off Sept. 4 when the Quakers host Greensboro College in the 14th Annual Gate
City Soup Bowl. The contest, which has generated over 40,000 canned food
items for Triad-area food banks, highlights Guilford’s 10-game slate and is
one of two played under the lights of Guilford’s Armfield Athletic Center.
Seventh-year head coach Kevin Kiesel schedule features of six Old Dominion
Athletic Conference (ODAC) contests and four non-league games. Six Guilford
opponents had .500 records or better in 2009, including league-rival
Hampden-Sydney College. The Tigers, who host Guilford Oct. 30, are coming
off a 10-1 campaign that included a perfect 10-0 regular-season record.
Johns Hopkins University ended Hampden-Sydney’s year in the first round of
the 2009 NCAA Division III playoffs.
In addition to the Soup Bowl, other games of note include the Sept. 11
contest with Methodist University and the Nov. 6 game with the Catholic
University of America. Guilford will honor its newest class of Athletics
Hall of Fame inductees prior to the Sept. 11 tilt. The November contest
centers Guilford’s Homecoming Weekend and also marks the Quakers’ final home
contest of the year.
Guilford expects 11 starters among 34 letter winners returning from last
year’s 3-7 unit (2-4 ODAC). The Quakers’ preseason camp opens Aug. 13 in
preparation for the Sept. 4 season opener.
