GREENSBORO, N.C. – Fred Couples is returning to the Piedmont Triad to play
the Wyndham Championship, it was announced today. The 71st Wyndham
Championship begins Monday at Sedgefield Country Club.
Couples joins a Wyndham Championship field that includes world No. 14
Anthony Kim, 2008 Masters winner Trevor Immelman, 2009 U.S. Open champion
Lucas Glover, two-time Wyndham winners Davis Love III and Rocco Mediate,
John Daly, David Duval, David Tom, Mike Weir and the last three Wyndham
Championship winners, Ryan Moore, Carl Pettersson and Brandt Snedeker.
Couples has won 49 tournaments worldwide including 15 on the PGA TOUR and
three this year on the Champions Tour. He won the Masters in 1992 and has
represented the United States on five Ryder Cup teams, four President’s Cup
teams and was the winning coach in last year’s Presidents Cup Matches.
Couples finished tied for fifth in last year’s Wyndham Championship which
was his 12th Wyndham Championship appearance. He played 10 consecutive
tournaments here from 1981-’93; he turned professional in 1980 and graduated
from PGA TOUR qualifying school later that year.
“This is awesome news for the Wyndham Championship,” tournament director
Mark Brazil said. “We are very excited about Freddy returning this year.
He played very well here last year and almost won the event, but without
question, he’s one of the biggest draws in golf.”
