Greensborosports.com/FedEx Player of the Week and HS Check List

There was a full bus load of outstanding performances from last Friday night’s games and let’s begin to list some of those, as we study/search, for the Greensborosports.com/FedEx Player of the Week….

Previous weekly winners:
Daniel Downing(Northern Guilford)
Matt Pawlowski(Northwest Guilford)
Mike Fields(Southeast Guilford)
Elijah Jordan(Smith)
Drew Adams(High Point Central)
James Summers(Page)
Jamie Cunningham(Southern Guilford)

Let’s look at some of the performances from last week and see who you would vote for, from last week’s choices and we always have the final say on who gets the nod, it is almost like the judges have to make the end result/final decision….

Jamie Cunningham over Reid Baxter last week and some of the lean went toward Jamie since he is a junior and Reid is just a sophomore and Jamie had been up for the award more than once this season and the readers have spoken and you can voice your opinion this week by E-mailing me later at andy@greensborosports.com……We will repeat that address later on in the competition/blogging…..(Cunningham and Baxter, two outstanding young talents and I have met Cunningham in person and have seen Baxter on TV and at 7 on 7’s and that kid can fly….The ball flys out of Cunningham’s hand and into receiver’s awaiting arms/hands…

This week’s Player of the Week????? Is it Tuc Phan from Page? He was our Steak N Shake Player of the Game in last week’s Page-Grimslely contest and he had 118 yards on 15 carries for two TD’s and also returned a kickoff 51 yards….There is a lot of Tuc Talk in the neighborhood and it couldn’t have happened to a nicer kid….Good guy, but we will have to wait and see if he is the POW….

Who will be the POW? In some if not many ways, we are looking for a new face to take home this honor…..Luke Heavner from Ragsdale, the Tigers fine senior QB, threw for 263 yards on 14-19 passing and hit on 4 TD’s to four different receivers in the Tigers big win over SWG….Is Heavner our man this week? Also for the Tigers, it was WR Anthony Stewart catching three passes for 122 yards, including a 92-yard touchdown bomb.

Malik Mosley at Southern Guilford is a new name and he made a name for himself last Friday night, in the Storm’s victory over SW Randolph….Mosley had 191 rushing and ran for 3 touchdowns and he proved that if the opposition stops or slows down Cunningham, then the Storm can still keep progressing/building….

Matt Pawlowski at Northwest Guilford is a previous winner, but he has to at least garner Check List consideration this week, after his performance in the Vikings’ win over HP Central, last Friday night…..Pawlowski had one TD pass for NWG and his 20-yard touchdown run provided the winning points for the Vikes…..NWG’s Chris Eley receives Check List status, after his TD catch from Matt P., and extra-effort on at least two occasions, that gave NWG the push they needed to stay in and win the game….A combo Check List spot to Reid Baxter/Dalton Dillon, as both young men had huge games, as the primary RB’s for NWG and Baxter continues to impress with his kick returns….

Josh Thompson of Western Guilford had a break-out game for the Hornets in their tight loss to the Smith Golden Eagles and his tight end, Tyler Stutts came up with two big TD receptions….Thompson tossed 3 TD’s and he ran for one from his quarterback position….For the game, Thompson was 17-29, with no interceptions and he posted 230 passing yards….

In the same contest, Smith’s QB Jeff Sims did it again, humming 4 TD passes and Sims went 17-27 with one INT., and he hit for 288 yards, in the 34-31 win by Smith over Western….Smith’s mighty-mite runningback, Elijah Jordan, had 181 yards rushing on 28 carries, with one TD…..Eric Ebron also had another big game for the Golden Eagles, hauling in a TD pass from his tight end spot and playing Julius Peppers-like defense from his DE spot….Jordan has taken home this POW honor before this season, but with his effort against WG, Sims might be your man, he hasn’t won this award yet this year, but he might be saving his biggest and best performance for the Page Pirates, this Friday night at Marion Kirby Stadium…..

James Summers, the Pirates QB, had an off night by some fans estimation last Friday night at Grimsley, but he still found the time to throw 4 touchdown passes in the Pirates’ victory over the Whirlies…..Summers was 7-15 for 112 yards and all he did was help put points on the board for the Pirates…..Two of Summers’ four TD passes, went to his primary target, Orlando “Junior” Hatfield….I also like the work/effort turned in by Carter Greene from Page….He punts, handles the kickoff duties, holds on extra point attempts, and is also one of six solid Page receivers…..Greene caught one TD pass last week and his effort to get into the end zone, did not go unnoticed….

For Grimsley on the Check List, you have to go with Kevin Walton….He blocked two Page punts, he scored on 1-yard run and he was also returning kickoffs…The Walton kid is play-maker and he was a big factor in last Friday night’s game….Whirlie freshman QB Jake Simpson had a hand in two GHS TD’s, as he ran for one and helped put another on the board on an 81-yard pass play, to WR Travon Woods for a score…..Simpson threw for right at 200 yards(198) on the night and he was 10-31 with no INTS….Was also impressed with the defense of Rayshaun Mayfield and Thomas Webster from the young Whirlies and the line play of DJ Reader….

Mike Fields from Southeast Guilford may have the inside track on this POY deal……Fields has already won the POW and he might be ready to grab the POY….Last week versus Southern Alamance, Fields had four TD runs and the Burlington Times-News had him at 406 yards rushing on 26 carries for the game…. Fields is right at 1500 yards rushing and 26 TD’s for the year….

In a comparison and contrast to SEG’s Mike Fields, the Charlotte Observer’s Langston Wertz Jr., has been looking at what RB Justus Pickett has done this year….

Ardrey Kell running back Justus Pickett is having one of the best seasons, and maybe the best, any running back has ever had in Mecklenburg County.

Last Friday, he rushed for 289 yards and five touchdowns in a 42-24 win against Myers Park. Pickett, who rushed 32 times, averaged more than 9 yards per carry. For the season, he has 1,399 yards and 19 touchdowns in seven games.

Some interesting numbers….

Just a few more numbers and we’ll be ready to close this one out for this week….

Daniel Downing(Northern Guilford), a repeat offender/contender on the POW Check List, had 127 yards passing and one TD toss and it went to Maurice Harris last Friday……Double D is a candidate for the POY, as he continues to put up steady weekly totals and most importantly, his team continues to win….Eastern may have lost the game to Northern, but that did not hinder the efforts of EG’s Jamil Lee, son of N.C. A&T’s Alonzo Lee, the Aggies’ head coach….Jamil Lee turned in a super effort, with a 19-yard TD run and then another touchdown scamper of 11 yards….Lee gained 106 yards on the ground for the Wildcats….

Drew Adams’ High Point Central squad did not get the victory over NWG, but Drew, the DA QB, ran for two TD scores and he threw a pass to Justin Johnson for another score…..

The Northeast Guilford Rams got six touchdowns in their 42-21 win over Asheboro and they went like this….FB Caleb McCann ran for three scores, RB Johnny King scored twice, once on a run and the other time on pass from QB Kyle Martin…Martin threw for one score and he caught a pass for another TD…..NEG Ram PK Evan Reaser, made all six of his kicks, for a perfect night in PAT’s…..

Who is this week’s POW? The Greensborosports.com/FedEx Player of the Week????

Let us know at andy@greensborosports.com……..Get on in there today and have your say, how the kids play…….

  1. 406 from Mike Fields Jr. came on 26 carries…..I’m not good with math..

  2. Mike Fields Jr. is a BEAST! He already has 26 TD’s, and I think he’s just getting started. Keep it up Mike, we’re PROUD of you.

  3. Malik Mosley is abetter player than Reid Baxter Both have good speed but Moselys first step is quick as this was his first year getting snaps on varsity. Both are great players Mosely is a similar player to TJ logan from northern both quick and strong.

  4. Jeff Sims From Smith Keeps Performing Every Week…Come On Guys He’s Putting Up Tremendous Numbers

  5. You are right about Sims, we have had info up here on him just about every week….He has won the Steak N Shake Player of the Game award and maybe it is time for him to take home the POW also and with a win over Page this week, he might fall in line for POY….

Baxter and Mosley are the young bucks/backs of the future in Guilford County and I have people asking about those guys every day now…The word on Baxter is that he took one heck of hit last week in the HPC game and they thought he might stay down, but he was right back up and back in the game soon, running as hard as he could go…

Mosley will take some of the pressure off of Cunningham, just like Tuc took did for Summers last week in the Page-Grimsley game…..We use the pass to set up the run and or now maybe we can use the run to set up the pass or something like that….

We have the players out here, it is just a matter of getting them all the pub we can….One of these days we’ll see some of these Guilford County kids on the big stage in college or in the pros and we’ll say, Hey!, I knew that kid back when…..Back in the day, in the old neighborhood and it’s a big neighborhood in the County….

  6. Yes, Andy, Baxter took a helmet to helmet hit, sat out 1 play & came back in to help the Vikings seal the win! Tough kid!
