Greensborosports.com/FedEx Player of the Week and HS Check List
Very good race last week with our three finalists Eric Ebron, Mycah Gaylord and Airyn Willis and in the end by the vote of the readers/fans, the winner is…….Mycah Gaylord(Dudley High School)…..Hopefully we can get Mycah over to the Shane’s Rib Shack on Westover Terrace, on Thursday night for our Football in Focus Show, prior to the Page-Dudley game on Friday night, at Page….We are going to try and get Airyn Willis next week and we had Eric once earlier in the season….
Again, good job by Mycah and we hope we can get him over to Shane’s on Thursday night…..He joins all of our previous winners from this season….They are the Greensborosports.com/FedEx Players of the Week and we will have our Player of the Year, at the end of the current season…..
Previous weekly winners:
Daniel Downing(Northern Guilford)
Matt Pawlowski(Northwest Guilford)
Mike Fields(Southeast Guilford)
Elijah Jordan(Smith)
Drew Adams(High Point Central)
James Summers(Page)
Jamie Cunningham(Southern Guilford)
Jeff Sims(Smith)
Mycah Gaylord(Dudley)
This week’s POW(Player of the Week) by the judges’ voting will go to Duke McCoy from Smith High School….Duke really stepped up last Friday night, in the Golden Eagles(10-0) win over Grimsley….Elijah Jordan was out of the Eagles lineup at RB, so Duke lined up at TB, FB, he kicked off for Smith, he held the ball for Fernando Martinez on extra point kicks, he played linebacker full time on the Smith defense and he scored two TD’s…..
We are going to leave this voting open for comments and your votes for Duke, or your choice at andy@greensborosports.com….We had the largest voter turnout last week, that we have had all season long and we hope to see more input from you this week….
Other possible choices and our list of Check List representatives this week will include….Mycah Gaylord is on the Check List again with his 238 yards and three touchdowns in the Dudley Panthers’ 28-7 win over Western Guilford…..Gaylord got the 238 on 33 carries….
Others young men from Smith will include Kiandre Thompson, who had one of the best pass rushes we’ve seen, coming in from his left side defensive end position, in the Eagles’ victory over Grimsley….This was not really a bullrush, it was more like a deer rush or an antelope rush….The kid was flying like an Eagle, as he went in there and took down Whirlie QB Jake Simpson….Smith’s Demari Boswell excited the Homecoming crowd with his 85-yard interception return for a touchdown to close out the game…Kicker Fernando Martinez was 5-5 on PAT’s and RB Mike Millner had a stellar 79-yard TD run, to get Smith on the scoreboard, for the first time last week…
For Grimsley, we give a Check List nod to QB Jake Simpson, with one TD pass and a touchdown run, before he got knocked out and had to leave the game and also DJ Reader, who had one heck of a game, from his O-line and D-line spots….
From Northern Guilford we have Rocco Scarfone, Daniel Downing, TJ Logan and the entire Northern Guilford Nighthawk offensive line….Scarfone and Downing combined for 234 yards passing and three TD’s through the air…Scarfone threw for two TD’s and Downing one and Downing also ran for one TD….Logan had two rushing touchdowns and we also need to get Tre Purcell in here, as he ran back a blocked punt for a TD and scored on a 72-yard run….The O-line kept the offense moving all night long as the Nighthawks posted 286 yards rushing and 234 passing….The NG D-line deserves some credit too for keeping Rockingham County off-balance and off the scoreboard the entire evening….(56-0, NG over RC.)
For the Page Pirates this week, we look at Drew Rogers and James Summers with 3 touchdowns a-piece in the win over Southern Almance and K Carter Greene had 6 PAT’s….Greene is always busy in these football games…Kickoff, now PAT’s, WR and formerly holder for PAT’s and if he is still doing the holding and kicking both, then he gets the POW award hands down or hands up, whichever way he holds and kicks at the same time…..All seven of the Page TD’s in the game, came by way of the ground…
QB Drew Adams from High Point Central saw his Bison fall to the Glenn Bobcats, but Drew threw for 305 yards and 2 TD’s and he ran for another….RB Rakeem Grimes had two rushing TD’s for HPC….
Matt Pawlowski, Reid Baxter, and Chris Eley for the Northwest Guilford Vikings….Matt P., the NWG QB, had three TD passes for the Vikings and 175 yards through the air, while Baxter ran for a touchdown from 31 yards out and he took a pass to the end zone, on a long 63-yard reception from Pawlowski…..Eley caught one TD pass from Matt P and he ran for a score, on a 20-yard move to the promised land…..
For the Northeast Guilford Rams it was the Kyle Martin and Johnny King thing, with Martin running for two scores on 82 yards rushing and King ran for 154 yards and one TD…
Southern Guilford’s quarterback Jamie Cunningham had 247 yards on 14-28 passing for two touchdowns and Malik Mosley had a 50-yard run for a score and he also caught a pass from JC for a TD….Storm return man Macolm Haywood, put up 159 yards on the night….
For the Raiders of High Point Andrews, Xavier Quick and Marquez Swinton stole the show, in HPA’s 20-14 win over Randleman….Quick RB, did it on the ground and QB Swinton, went to the air….
If you have another name for Player of the Week, other than Duke McCoy start getting me some votes at andy@greensborosports.com….You can also hit me hard with some McCoy votes at the same address…..
I’m not taking anything away from any of the athletes but my nod must go to Drew Rogers. We were down just shy of going into halftime and Drew carried our team on his back. He trucked the ball down to (inside first and goal) and put us in a position for our 1/4back to run a sneak and made the points. Also, I must commend #45–he got the touchback but I didn’t see the credit for it. Between those two, it was the spark that lit the fire for Page to have an outstanding 3rd quarter and secured the win.
Mental…….
The game of football is 10% physical and 90% mental.
That’s what they did. They turned our guys around…MENTALLY! That’s how we got BACK in the game.
Also–I gotta give a shout out to our defense. We’ve still got a ways to go but I see, week after week they do things that aren’t necessarily recorded in any books.
Just my opinion…….
I totally disagree with the above statement!!!! Smiths players have played outstanding!!!! Duke McCoy, Kiandre Thompson, Eric Ebron, Demari Boswell, Elijah Jordan!! All these boys need to be nominated and recognized for there hard work and there record speaks of it!! As the Golden Book says, “Who was last SHALL be first”!!!!!! Love those Eagles!!!!!! I nominate KiAndre Thompson the “South Carolina” BOY!!!! Job well done
