Southern Pines, NC- The Northern Guilford High School Women’s Golf Team finished third place in the 12-team 1A/2A/3A State Championship held at the par 71 5,678 yard Foxfire Golf and Country Club in Southern Pines. The 36-hole event concluded Tuesday afternoon.
The Nighthawks, who were making their second consecutive trip to the tournament, finished 29 shots behind West Henderson (486), who won its second straight title. Salisbury (498), who was runner-up in 2009 was second.
Northern was led by junior Taylor Penzer who tied for 8th in the 78-player field with scores of 76 and 83. Senior Tailar Murphy tied for 29th for a two-round total of 175, while junior Elizabeth Ewing tied at 41st at 181.
The best three scores of a team counted toward the team totals, and a total of 12 teams and 78 golfers competed in the event. The tournament marked the eighth time that a separate 1A/2A/3A championship has been held and the 30th year for state championship competition in the sport
