Greensboro College to add men’s swimming and women’s golf..

Greensboro College will sponsor intercollegiate women’s golf and men’s swimming, President Dr. Lawrence Czarda announced today. The Pride will begin competing in the sports starting with the 2011-12 academic year.

With the two new offerings, student-athletes can now compete in 18 NCAA Division III sports at Greensboro College. “We studied the feasibility of adding teams this Fall and felt that women’s golf and men’s swimming would be a great fit at GC,” Pride Athletics Director Jean Lojko said.

“There’s no facilities issue – we already have an outstanding swimming facility, and Greensboro and the Triad are a golf-rich environment,” Czarda said. “For a minimal investment – two assistant-coach positions, travel and recruiting – we’re building on existing, strong programs and facilities and we’re adding gender equity. And our research shows that the kind of student-athlete who typically excels in these sports perfectly fits our profile.”

The USA South does not sponsor either sport. In women’s golf, however, USAS member Methodist competes. A number of other conference members are cosidering adding the sport.

“We have one of the best men’s golf programs in the nation,” Lojko said. “We’re confident we can build a strong women’s team under Dirk Fennie’s leadership. Like the men’s program, the team will use the Bryan Park practice facility. We already have a few women golfers on campus who are excited about competing.”

Women’s Swimming Head Coach Scot Budde will lead the new men’s program. While there aren’t any Division III programs in North Carolina, The Pride can travel to Virginia, and compete locally against many DII and NAIA teams.

“We’re excited about the Royce Reynolds Family Student Life Center Pool as a meet venue,” Lojko said. “It’s a great place to watch a meet and our new timing system makes it a first-class competition site. We also believe young men want to swim in college and look to provide that opportunity.”

  1. What are they thinking adding 2 more sports…..Always cutting corners….sure add 2 more sports but put the work load on the the head coaches who they will stretch out and take away from their own programs. That’s more stress on a Sports Information staff who is already depleted

“We have students on campus right now who wanna play golf?” Yeah, that’s great don’t recruit and take the students that are on campus that means no new tutions to help the expenses….same format at cross country let’s take all the athletes who get cut from other sports and put them on the team. No recruiting for cross country just hey Who wants to run??? Those teams are terrible to be honest just a bunch of basketball players getting their running in….

Why don’t you think Strable added these sports……he knows better!

  2. I think the addition of these two sports may well attract a few more local kids. I am pretty sure Coach Budde will mine local talent.

One head coach for men and womens swim teams is common and they are adding an Asst. Seems a good fit to me as well. I wish them luck.
