HS Hoops Tonight for 2/4/11: Page at Dudley looms large…

We will be at Dudley tonight for the Panthers and the Pirates, as Page visits Lincoln Street to meet Dudley, for the Metro 4-A Conference regular season title…..Both boys teams enter with 2 conference losses….Dudley defeated Page at the Mac Morris Gym two weeks ago and now the Pirates get a shot to return the favor and Frank Evaes has returned to the Page lineup….Paris Kea is now back with the Page girls squad and that should make the young ladies’ game even more interesting…..The JV boys game was Dudley 54, Page 50 last time, and the game was tied at 50-50 late, and then the Pirates had to foul to get the ball and the Panthers hit almost all of their free throws….Outstanding games on tap tonight at Dudley and if you get a chance, you can check out our radio broadcast on AM950 and for those outside the broadcast area, the game will be available at www.wpetam950.com…….JV boys at 5pm and the other games to follow….We will start our broadcast during the girls game at around 7:15/7:30, and then we will lead right into the boys action which should get rolling at around 8pm……

  1. Good luck broadcasting at Dudley tonight! I hope you will be able to hear yourself talk over the guy who does the PA. He really likes to hear himself talk, its too bad too, because he really takes away from the game. It’s about the game and the players, not how much you talk and do a poor job of play by play, second by second. Dudley has a great basketball program and a great place to play but please get you another PA guy. I wish I had a dollar for every time he said “Basketball”.

  2. Skip is a good guy and he cares about the kids and you’ve got to like the nicknames…Those nicknames will grow on you….Sometimes it all has to grow on you and it will…..

  3. Andy, he may be a good guy to you but he’s a boorish human being. I have personally heard him be extremely rude to opposing coaches just because he could not get off his fat a– and move a foot over to one side. I personally agree with “please be quiet” and think he does detract from the game. name another PA announcer in this area who tries to be the “big show” instead of allowing the kids to be the focal point, please.
    EW
PS. It will never grow on me.

  4. Let me first say that I am not a Dudley graduate, “supporter” or whatever. The PA announcer is a refreshing piece of the Dudley experience. The PA announce makes the game even more exciting. Even the girls games are more exciting with a good PA annoucer. For most schools such as GDS the PA announcer does not woke up until the boys hit the floor but at Dudley things are rolling from the beginning to the end whether it is the girls or the boys.

I also really enjoy the nicknames. I do not remember all of the kids names but some suck in my head such as “the pearl”, “the beast”, “the real deal”, etc..

It would be nice if Andy or some Dudley support (or even the PA announcer himself) could product the list of some of the favor nicknames over the years and a quick summary of how the name was “earned” or why given to a specific kid.

  5. Some that come back to mind include “The PT Cruiser” Brennan Wyatt, “The Helicopter” Eric Hicks, “The Glove” Marcus Heath, “The Rock” Rickie Lewis, Some other kid was called “The Rifleman”….And I like the “Real Deal” Reggie Dillard and the current “The Diesel” Desiree Drayton…..There have been many others and the nicknames are like a piece of Dudley basketball history……I think one of the current kids is called the Big Show and Mike Koger from a few years ago was called “The Big Cat”……

The current “Sam I am Hunt”, is pretty good too…..And “The Weatherman”, Jamar Weathers is not bad, I like that one…..

We will try and think of more…..

Still everyone is entitled to their own opinion……

  6. Again, where all the Dudley people at? You cant blame it on the refs, it was a home game ! !

  7. Skip the Dudley announcer gets my VOTE. Wish more schools had a Skip. The crowd gets
to know the players and the games wouldn’t be so dry. No different than football. Everyone
school should have a good, compassionate announcer.

Skip the man that can… get the word out!

  8. @ Hoopshype – Nobody is going to blame the REFS for that game last night on Lincoln St. Page beat Dudley, and beat them severely at that. Page wanted that game more than Dudley, and they wanted to make a statement as well. I don’t know why you want to RUB IT IN THE FANS OF DUDLEY ??? I’m not a betting man, but I have a feeling if that score had been flip in favor of Dudley, YOU and others would have called DUDLEY “CLASSLESS” FOR AIMING TO GET TO 100 PTS, EVEN AFTER HAVING THAT GAME WELL IN HAND.

But what I saw last night was a team {Page} focus and determine to play intense ball and win. Dudley wasn’t focus and it only their fought to blame. But nobodies going to blame the refs.

Believe it or not, Dudley { With Will Graves & Kevin Swinton }has been beat like that before. About 5 or 6 years ago GLENN H.S. laid the wood on Dudley as well at the Panthers Gym during there Conference Tourney, it was like 87-52 or something like that. But yes the Panthers can turn in a cunker from time to time.
