The South Johnston High School football team faces a $400 fine and a year of probation for illegal summer workouts. The school announced the penalties Monday after learning of them over the weekend.

The N.C. High School Athletic Association found that the football team practiced on seven days in July – outside the defined sports season – and used illegal equipment and body-to-body contact.

NCHSAA Deputy Commissioner Que Tucker said South Johnston wore pads other than shoulder pads during summer workouts in July. Tucker declined to comment on the specific drills South Johnston participated in during the summer.
