College Women’s Soccer Final – #20 Va. Wesleyan 1, Guilford 0

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Krista Witmer banged home Jessica Edleman’s 27th-minute corner kick to give 20th-ranked Virginia Wesleyan College a 1-0 soccer victory at Guilford College Saturday night. The Marlins (12-1, 5-1 ODAC) kept the heat on Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) leading Lynchburg College with their 12th in win 13 matches.

The Marlins are ranked 20th in this week’s D3soccer.com Top 25 Poll.

The highly defensive contest saw just nine combined shots, seven by Virginia Wesleyan. Guilford (8-5-2, 3-2-2 ODAC) managed only one first-half shot on goal, which Marlins’ keeper Erica Keil stopped en route to her team-leading fourth shutout of the year.

Virginia Wesleyan’s Christina Fernandes hit the crossbar with a looping shot in the 80th minute, but apart from that shot and the game-winner both goalies were largely untested. Guilford’s Amy Baker made four saves in the match.

The Quakers are back in action Wednesday (10/12) when they host league-rival Hollins University at 4:00 p.m.
