Former North Carolina State wide receiver Evan Dooley died last Monday after he was struck and killed by a truck on Highway 10 in California.

NC State head coach Tom O’Brien was at Dooley’s wake Monday morning before meeting the media for his weekly press conference.

“Our staff and the members of our current team who were his teammates were very sorry to hear about Evan,” O’Brien said in a statement Monday. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this difficult time.”

Dooley, 25, was a Greensboro native who had moved to Los Angeles in hopes of playing football professionally. His name surfaced as a potential pick in the 2010 UFL draft, but went unselected.

  1. I think Evan may have worn the #9 while at PAGE and I would know for sure if I could did up some of my old Page Pirate rosters and I had plenty over the years, but of got tossed during the unforeseen evacuation of 2011…….

I have to really the fact that even at age 25 Evan was still trying to make in in the pros and he had not given up on his dreams……

  2. The part about him running in and out of traffic on the LA Freeway/Highway 10 sounds very scarey……

  3. Interstate 10 is a MAJOR freeway. Even at 4:30 a.m. (another red flag) it’s no place for a pedestrian. Thoughts and prayers with the family.

  4. I hope that isn’t the same highway our buddies from Tennsees used to drive their truck on….Looked to be very busy and crowded……

The California Highway Patrol received reports of a naked man running alongside the road just after 4:30 a.m. — callers told the CHP that he was taking off his clothes and weaving into traffic lanes.

By 4:45 a.m., Dooley was down.

Emergency responders arrived to find him dead on the freeway, near La Brea Avenue (just past Culver City in the West Adams district). Coroner’s investigator Lieutenant Fred Corral says the victim “was run over by multiple vehicles” and “sustained massive traumatic injuries.”
