MoneyBall:Duke #1 in nation and UNC #3 in hoops revenue

MoneyBall….Basketball is MONEYBall at Duke and North Carolina and they both are bringing in a lot of money and they seem to be spending quite a bit to operate their programs too…..Duke with 12.3 million in expenses and UNC with 6.6 million in basketball expenses…..That makes for some expensive programs, but I guess when you are bringing so much in(Duke 26.7 mill and UNC 20.6 million), I guess there is a strong tendency to put some of that money back into your programs, but 12.3 millon a year in operating costs??? That is a lot of bucks for your hoops…….

Here is the scoop on the hoop poop(bucks) from the Triangle Buisness Journal, by way of WRALSportsFan.com………

from the TBJ(Triangle Business Journal):

Duke generated $26.7 million in basketball revenue in 2009-10 – the latest available EADA numbers – compared to $12.3 million in expenses, also the highest amount in the country.

The University of Louisville placed second with $25.9 million in revenue. Then came UNC with $20.6 million in revenue versus $6.6 million in basketball expenses.

It does cost a lot to run these top notch programs and you’ll see more on this when you CLICK HERE for WRALSportsFan and they have a link so you can go to the Triangle Business Journal……

  1. I would think this is what it is like in the state of Alamaba with football. I am at least glad that we have the heavy weights that we have in basketball since we apparently will never have it in football. I am also glad I am not living in a state like Wyoming, Iowa, or Mississippi where all of the football and basketball teams suck. At least we are at the top of the ladder in something that the country pays attention to within the world of sports. I just hope Duke and UNC can find solid replacements for K and Roy when it is time for them to step down. I also hope State can find the old magic with the new coach and I think Wake will have to start all over again very soon.

  2. Hey you….(up there!!!)
    .
    I was (somewhat) agreeing with you until you mentioned the University of Iowa the way that you did. I’ll admit, I’ve not kept up with their progress in sports over the last several years but I Do Know that the University of Iowa is one of the Finest institutions in the entire USA. My twin brother is an alumni member and let me tell you…his education there has provided him not only the best education but…he basically wrote his OWN ticket as far as job prospects went. Also….he played football there. He had the opportunity to play in the several major bowls (including the Rose Bowl). Sure, the ability to play sports at that level can provide a lifetime of memories but the ability to obtain an education from a school like the University of Iowa can make your path in life…endless.

    Go Hawkeyes!!!

  3. To Underdogs Unite!! I did not single out “Iowa” or the other states necessarily in a negative way. It may have read that way but my intention was to point out that these areas are not thought of as the center of the universe when it comes to the sports of football or basketball. The state of Florida was once the center of college football with Florida, Miami and FSU rolling up everybody in their path but I would say that the state of Alabama owns that title today. In basketball, NC has been and still remains the center of the basketball universe. You cannot have the discussion without mentioning a NC college. Thus, when I start talking about football and basketball and who is better and belongs in the national rankings year in and year out – Iowa will not be in that discussion. I am sure the education at Iowa is awesome and it will get you that board room job but they will likely never win a national champiionship in football or basketball along with states such as Mississippi and Wyoming. Just so you do not feel alone, I will also add the following states to this list: Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont, Minnsota, N Dakota, S Dakota, Montana, Washington, Idaho, Utah, New Mexico, Colorado, Missouri, and even West Virgina. Obviously if you lived in or went to schools in these areas, then you see the world differently but if you live here you must agree with this – right ??

  4. Hi you (up there)–

    I appreciate you clearing that up. I really do! Thanks for taking the time to respond to my comment.

    BTW–I’m GLAD you didn’t mention UConn in your response to me. I would’ve cyber stalked you for the rest of your natural life!!! Lol!
