Second Half Blitz Dooms Pride Football at Ferrum

After hanging around in the first half against a strong Ferrum team on Saturday, The Pride were unable to keep the game close in a 66-23 road defeat. Greensboro was within 21-16 late in the first half and trailed 28-16 at the break before a second half surge helped the host Panthers pull away.

The Pride fell behind 14-0 early before Joe Langmeyer connected on a 26-yard field goal with 3:18 remaining in the first quarter to get Greensboro on the board. Langmeyer added a 36-yard kick just 12 seconds into the second quarter to close the gap to 14-6.

After Ferrum found the scoreboard again, Ryan Throndset hit Tripp Honeycutt for an 11-yard touchdown to bring The Pride within 21-16 with 2:52 left in the first half. The Panthers answered with a quick score, however, to take a 28-16 advantage at the half.

Ferrum added the first 17 points of the second half before Warren Scott broke loose on a 44-yard touchdown run for Greensboro’s final points with 45 seconds to go in the third. Scott finished the game with a team high 87 yards rushing on 17 carries and added four receptions for a team leading 59 yards.

The Pride finished the game with with 221 yards of total offense, 132 through the air and 89 on the ground. The Panthers, meanwhile, racked up 601 total yards with 398 yards rushing and 203 yards passing. The Greensboro defense forced two turnovers while the offense committed four mistakes of its own.

Ryan Throndset completed 15 of his 33 attempts for 132 yards and a touchdown. Dexter Russell continued his solid play in the receiving game, catching four passes for 49 yards.

Defensively, Allen Stallings recorded a team high seven tackles while Cody McCray and Julian Cinotti chipped in with six apiece. McCray also recorded the lone interception for The Pride with a return of 44 yards.

Greensboro is back in action at home on October 29, hosting Christopher Newport in a 1 p.m. showdown at Grimsley High School.
