High School Football Saturday Morning Rewind

Both of those defenses played great in that Page-Dudley matchup, at Tarpley Stadium last night…..The Page defense was able to carry the Pirates until they had a chance to get all of their offense in gear……The Dudley offense had several opportunities, but they could not cash in, as the Page ‘D’ made it very tough on the Panthers’ offense, all night long…..

Page had guys getting to ball and they were penetrating into the backfield with Green, Workinger, Brooks, Cranford and others coming up with key hits/stops all night long….Devon Legrand posted a couple of key receptions for Dudley, but when the Panthers got the ball down inside the red zone, they could not get the ball into the end zone and that was due to the Page defense…..Savon Wall, Ed Britt and Will Henry were coming up, but Blake Hickman, Drew Rodgers and others were laying the lumber too, for Page….Rogers came up with 143 yards rushing and 2 TD’s for the Pirates and with the Page offensive line and the fullbacks, Workinger and Brooks, wearing the Dudley ‘D’ down, Page was able to rush for 228 yards and gain some late success, with at least two long runs by Rogers…..Dudley’s Chauncy Carter made a touchdown-saving tackle on Rogers and Carter also intercepted a pass thrown by his half-brother James Summers, from Page….Summers was just 2-10 with the one interception on the night and his TD toss went to Tevin Morrison, toward the left corner of the end zone…..The pass was almost identical to a pass that Summers threw to Morrison in the Ragsdale game, for a TD….Same side and the particulars……

Big game feel, with the big game atmosphere at Dudley last night, in the last Varsity game to played on the the old field at Dudley’s Tarpley Stadium……The Dudley ‘D’ was real tough last night and they posed a big test to the Page Pirates, but the Pirates passed the test and their defense now has four shutouts in nine games, in their (9-0) season…..

Shocked is how I would describe the feel of hearing the East Forsyth over Northwest Guilford score, from last night….Not overly shocked that East Forsyth won, just stunned at the difference, in the 35-6 East win….I knew East was good, saw them at Ragsdale, where the Tigers prevailed, and was well aware of that EF running game, with QB Garrison Duncan and RB Amon Giles, but 35-6 and East with 303 yards on the ground and zero passing, that is a very dominant ground game….

Semi-shocked at Western Guilford over Southeast Guilford, but you have to tip your hat/helmet to Tray Miller of WG….The kid has been playing ‘lights out football’ the past three weeks…..Miller had 157 yards rushing in the WG win over Southern Alamance, then followed that up with an interception return, for a TD of 78 yards, in a loss last week to Dudley and now Miller comes up with 161 yards on 23 carries last night for the Hornets and the Stadnik Brothers, Andrew Schultz and the big black and gold boys up front, are taking their Hornets to the playoffs…..Two TD’s running and one passing last night, for WG QB Josh Thompson…..Hornets in the playoffs after an (0-5) start…..That’s something there…..

I will tell you something……QB JC(Jamie Cunningham) saved his best for the last of the season, as the senior signal-caller for the Southern Guilford Storm threw for 4 TD’s and 311 yards last night, in the SG win over Ledford….Cunningham also ran for 94 yards and a touchdown…..Southern had 5 TD’s and Cunningham was in on every one of them…Plus SG, with JC at QB, was down in the game 21-7 and then 28-14 and the Storm, behind Cunningham still came back to win….That is a young man you would be glad to have on your side……

Northeast Guilford over North Forsyth 35-26 and the NEG Rams lost starting senior quarterback Kyle Martin, with a fractured wrist and that is a very big blow to the Rams….Martin is a leader and his loss will effect NEG, as they close out the season and head on into the playoffs….Small young man, with a huge heart and he played the game with a psssion, as he led his team to Conference Titles, in the past two seasons…..

The Grimsley Whirlies have won two games in a-row……What??? Yes now at (2-3) in the conference, the Whirlies have persevered, after losing their starting QB Jake Simpson to injury, earlier in the year…..Grimsley over Southern Alamance last night 12-0 and a win is a win, is a win, and if the Whirlies win at home next week versus Dudley, they might still have a chance to make the playoffs, with a (3-3) conference finish…TD’s last night by De’Sean Jones and D.J. Reader….Strong rushing/running night for Grimsley….

Eastern Guilford topped Burlington Williams to go (5-5/3-3) and the Wildcats are in the playoff hunt……Big defensive night for EG with Evan Moore and Quan Moss leading the EG defensive charge….

Northern Guilford had success at Morehead and that was no real surprise, with TJ logan scoring 3 TD’s and now his season total should be at 23 TD’s for 2011….NG(8-0/6-0) will be hosting Western Alamance(8-2/5-1) in a very tough game next Friday night out on Spencer-Dixon Road…..

High Point Central went with backup QB Woody Cornwell and after a slow start, Woody responded with 3 TD passes to Zerrick Baker and one more to give him four on the scoreboard and his fourth of the night went to Jamel McKiver and HPC also got a big night from it’s defense, in the 36-13 win over SWG….Rakeem Grimes is back and running strong for HPC and Will Johnson had a very good night with his punting, kickoffs and overall kicking for the Bison….

I missed my Ragsdale report the first time around and I think it was missing in my first edition paper this morning, or it could be I just completely overlooked it and it was there, but I don’t remember seeing it, but either way, I remember the score from last night, since we had it on our AM950 radio scoreboard and it was, Ragsdale 21, Glenn 0…..And now that I have my second/new resource, another edition of the paper, here we go with some of the key details….The people that I work with on Saturdays, all we do is sit around and talk about the games from Friday night….Very solid defensive effort by Ragsdale last night, and the win helps set up their game at High Point Central next Friday night…..Ragsdale was coming off of their bye week last night, after their previous game loss to NWG and the Tigers got plenty of work/effort out of QB Garrison Herndon and RB Marquez Eleazor….Eleazor had 89 yards rushing and he hit the end zone for one TD…..Brandon Walker had himself a 28-yard TD run and Xavier Jones added the other Tiger score…..Herndon went 10-13 passing with one interception and the Tigers had the game put away, up 21-0, by the end of the third quarter….The Ragsdale defense was paced by Trey Grimes with 9 tackles and three of those nine tackles, were tackles for a loss…..Ragsdale goes to (7-2/4-1) and can still finish in a three-way tie with NWG and East Forsyth, if the Tigers take care of the business at hand next Friday night in High Point, at Simeon Stadium, where they will face the HP Central Bison…..One stat they may bother the RHS coaches just a bit, would be the 7 penalties for 75 yards, in last night’s win over Glenn…..

Maybe saving one of the best of the night for last….The Smith Golden Eagles got into the win column for the first time this season last night, as Ben L. Smith put the ‘W’ back in Ben L., with the Eagles’ 20-19 victory over the WS Parkland Mustangs……The M&M’s were very big for Smith, with Myles Morris and Marlon Hughes leading the team to their first win of the season……

  1. Northern Guilford was never a match for Page! Page could have beaten them 50 to 14 if the refs were not trying to keep Northern in the lime light of this area.

  2. Oh ya, the refs have favorites. The NCHSAA lets us pick whom we want to win. We try to make sure that every game Northern Guilford has, at least 3 of the refs have kids going there, OR have sons playing on the Northern team. The Page AD didn’t contribute to the officials union, thus we try to make sure Page gets beat every week.

  3. if Northern could play Page tonight they would kick there a**! Northern was hit by the early season cramp monster in that game They were very much in the game at the half, but due to the cramps had to play the young guys late. The young guys are not young anymore. Let’s see who will be the last team standing in Greensboro. ” Da Nation”

    Lol!!!

  5. Ooppppppps….
    .
The correct phrase is….”if “ifs” and “buts” were candy and nuts, it’d be Christmas every day……”
    .
    .still……..Lol!

  6. I don’t think you you wanna see Page again! Stick to your little 3-A Conference that absolutely stinks this season. Northern is good but really that Conference you are in is total junk!

  7. Got my Ragsdale update now added in and missed it the first time around this morning and may be that it was not in my first paper, but it was in my second and I am now back on track…..Maybe nest time I need to be eating a bowl of Kellog’s Frosted Flakes when I am going into the Rewind, but that is another thought for another time…..Those Tigers last night heard their fans saying, “They’re Great”……..

  8. football-lover – as a true Nighthawk fan there is no shame losing to Page…you have a very good team. The only thing that matters now is finish strong and focusing on rnd 1 of the playoffs….good luck and see you at the Nest next year.

  9. Well the reason why we lost the games we did this year was the REFS had CRAMPS…yeah yeah that’s the ticket.

  10. The Page team I saw last night looked very un-disciplined and was fortunate to get out of Tarpley with a win. Late hits out of bounds, LOTS of holding penalties and yes, trash-talking! I would bet the farm Mallard Creek is already breaking down film from this one. Dudley’s defense had Summers scrambling all night. If that defense held up Page only scores once in the game; Dudley needs to find other ways to score otherwise Page goes home with an L. Northern Guilford would have won this one by 2 scores atleast. Overall, great game but Page dodged one last night.

  11. Jim,

Dudley got one flag the entire night, so I guess that makes them perfect…I saw plenty of holds by them as well still not one holding call…Not to mention the ridiculous punt that didn’t even make it to the line of scrimmage yet somehow the refs screwed that one up and gives the ball back to Dudley…That would have given the ball to Page on Dudley’s 25 yard line…And trash talking???…I guess you didn’t see that other team trash talking cause you must be blind…

Now, Dudley played the best that anyone has played Page this year defensively…Offensively, Dudley doesn’t have anything and if they could have mustered up a little bit of offense then Page might have been in trouble…however, the better team won…

  12. No question that Page and Northern have emerged as the two best area teams. Nothing would be better than both teams (or other area teams) bringing home State Championship trophies to the Triad because frankly, I think the CLT and RDU programs under-estimate our Triad teams. It will be a tough road for each, but doable. Agruably, the two best players in the area (Summers, Logan) play for these teams. Let’s face it, coaching is a big part of High School football and these two coaches know how to win and develop the “team” unity that wins championships. Even though both teams were already good at the beginning of the season, they have both gotten better since. I would bet that most Page fans and players would agree that Northern was their toughest game. However, if they played again, I’d expect about the same score…but it sure would be fun to see Summers and Logan on the same field again!

  13. Jim,
Dudley was basically spotted 80 yards. I would have expected at least one score from Dudley. Page’s defense needs to be voted the player of the week. Dudley’s offense was good, maybe equal to Page’s but the Dudley’s defense was just not on par with Page’s defense. The better team one this year. Not by one touchdown but three.

  14. Pagedad,

As a neutral observer on Friday evening, I can only hope that Page has a better showing once they get into that 4AA playoff bracket with Butler and Mallard Creek. The game with Dudley should been over much sooner than 4 mins. left in the game considering how Page took care of Ragsdale, HP Central etc.. If i’m wrong, i’ll be the first to admit it but IMO Page was exposed by a ‘lesser’ team and I say the Pirates are in BIG trouble after the first round of the playoffs.

  15. Even Butler only beat Ardrey Kell, a ‘lesser’ opponent, by 3 a few weeks earlier and no, being in Charlotte doesn’t excuse the scoring margin. Page has a few things it needs to work on offensively but better to win ugly than lose pretty. And don’t count the Pirates out of the 4AAs. The Pirates have a few weeks and a couple of games to iron out its offense before it has to deal with a Butler or Mallard Creek.

  16. Page Dad and Jonathan,

I hope you don’t think that Page will beat Mallard Creek, Butler, or even Richmond County. Those teams are far better than Page. The passing game those 2 Charlotte teams is going to eat Page alive. And the biggest reason is the line of scrimmage will be dominated on both sides of the ball by those teams as well. Page has had a good defense for the teams in this area but that is because the teams in this area dont have big and physical o-lines. I hope Page goes far in the playoffs but if they face either of the 3 teams above in the 2nd or 3rd round, they are doomed.

  17. @Eagle89

Apparently you haven’t seen Richmond or Butler this year..

Richmond is not that great and Butler’s defense has a hard time stopping good teams.

Mallard Creek is really good, I will give you that.. but like a Charlotte guru, I know says, “They are beatable, because their coaching isn’t the best.”

  18. The better team won and thats a fact. But Dudley is not Page measuring stick. Page will have to keep more poised.

  19. Let’s lay off the kids and let the coaches take care of the business….The coaches have the handle and we need to let them run the show…..

  20. nobody gives page credit for anything. they are 9 and 0 and still no respect. but you have to consider who is talking losers and losers to page. page has a great program and a good head coach who can teach the game of football. good coaches on staff and a great support system with their boosters. stop hating on page because they are good WAIT and see what happens. if you are from greensboro you should pull for any guilford county team against anybody in the state. get a life and stop whining let a a #$#$%. and by the way if the field hadnt been so wet A typical dudley field it would have been over early. everyone was falling so whats your point JIM LANGLEY. YOU ARE CRAZY AND DONT KNOW FOOTBALL. GET A LIFE.BUDDY

  21. To eagle89,

Since when does a Smith fan have room to come on here and bash a 9-0 team? Really??? Are you serious??? HA HA HA HA…That has me laughing so hard my belly hurts. Please…I’d much rather be looking at winning a conference championship this week than being happy for winning my first game of the season…I’d much rather be looking at playing West Forsyth, East Forsyth, Butler, Mallard Creek, Richmond County, or NWG than sitting at home…You’ve got to be kidding me coming on here posting like that…LOL…Not to mention, Smith was undefeated last year, got beat by a winless team and then lost in the 1st round 4A playoffs…For someone who’s team don’t even play in the big 4A, you sure do have a lot of mouth…I just call that a hater…

Also, where have you been? I mean, before the season started you were all over this thing saying Smith was going to have a better team than last year…Then “POOF” you disappear…Please, take your lame self some where else before I die laughing over here man…

  22. Jim,

I said Page beat Dudley by three touchdowns, of course that doesn’t count the touchdown called back. That would be four(forget the stupid call concerning the punt). Page usually ends up having one or two touch downs called back. I’ll call those gimmes. One game I believe it was three or four called back. Just seems to be a pattern there. Will Page win the State? They are just a good team that gels and plays as a team, the guys and coaches will certainly have a nice year to remember, no matter the out come.

  23. Pagedad,
I just have to say that you have a right to your opinion, but I can’t agree with your statement about Dudley’s defense, If you were at the same game that I was then you should be worried come playoff time. Two things stood out to me. (1) Coach Davis exposed the Page offense by sending six and sometimes seven men at Summers as he was rattled most of the game. How many times was he sacked? I’ve seen a couple of Page games this year and I can’t recall anyone blitzing them that much, it’s pretty much what the Pirates do to everyone else. (2) Dudley got too fancy on offense and got away from their style too early. Almost as if they didn’t know who to play at qb, and whether to run or pass. The score should have easily been 14-7 Dudley at the half. I I can’t remember when the last time a Dudley team threw the ball 27 times in a game? And yes they had receivers open all night. I heard all week before the game from Page alum that they were shooting for 60, but if you know Coach Davis, then you should know that wasn’t going to happen. You can’t blame it on the field conditions as a poster stated earlier in the week, because both teams had to play on it. Fact is when these two teams played last year at Page, the scored was 21-12. I truly don’t think you can compete against the Charlotte area teams if you can’t protect your QB, and you leave guys open in the secondary. With that being said,Great win Pirates!
Also it was great to see all the former Dudley coaches at the end of the game.
