High School Football Saturday Morning Rewind:Playoff seedings/pairings from the NCHSAA are due out today

Before we get started today, I think we need to keep in mind what someone posted here earlier today/late last night and it does make you stop and think that we do need to keep our priorities in order….

from last night’s high school football game at A.J. Simeon Stadium in High Point:

The official at the Ragsdale/High Point Central game that had a heart attack last night has passed away. RIP Mr. Eric McCoy. Please send your prayers out to his family.

From last night’s games on the last Friday night of the regular season….. I would say the effort by James Summers last night in the Page-Southeast Guilford game was unreal, but it wasn’t…..It was pretty much Real……That is how James Summers is….They kid can fly and he has some moves….I won’t say he is Superman, but he was like a super young man last night, with his three rushing TD’s and 242 yards running the ball and he passed for TD too…Excellent moves and his pump fake is almost like what you would see in basketball game….Congratulations to the Page Pirates on their (10-0) regular season and the run we saw from Jamal Petty(Southeast Guilford) was thing of beauty as well….Petty had 150 on the night and the long run of 73 was a reel highlight….The playoffs are going to be fun, one and done and who can make the long run, in the playoffs……Nasty night, but as the coaches told us, “it is what it is, or it was what it was”…..(Let me give a couple of quick closing props to Carter Greene of Page….Several clutch catches(one for a TD) and the senior handles the kickoffs, the punts and he holds for extra points and fellow-senior Ryan Jackson steady foot too, on all the PAT kicks.)

Speaking of teams making a run….Northern Guilford should be ready right about now, after taking apart Western Alamance 42-7 last night, out on Spencer-Dixon Road…..T.J. Logan, with 4 TD’s and 166 yards rushing, had another huge night for the Nighthawks…..A couple of the Nighthawks got dinged up a bit, but we hear that Daniel Downing(QB) and John McBeth(DE) are OK….Northern should be stoked for the playoffs…

I would love to see a playoff game that featured Northeast Guilford vs. Southern Guilford…..Both teams won last night and they share the Mid-Piedmont 3-A title, but NEG gets the #1 seed in the playoffs, since they topped Southern in their regular season meeting…..Very good football being played by both of these teams this year…..Jamie Cunningham came up big for Southern again last night, with 2 TD runs and one touchdown pass and his teammate Malik Moseley ran for 168 yards…The SG Storm defense was huge last night, limiting Asheboro to just two field goals in the game…..

Northeast called on Jacob McCann to carry the load last night and he did, in the Rams’ win over Ledford….McCann scored three of NEG’s five TD’s and new QB Tyrone Hammer ran for 126 yards and a score, in his first start since replacing injured senior Kyle Martin, at QB….I did like the quote from Ledford’s coach Chris Adams who said after the game, “I’d like to play the #1 team in the state in the first round of the playoffs…We’ll get them out of the way in a hurry and go on from there”……

The Dudley Panthers a hard-earned win at Grimsley last night, getting 2 TD passes from junior QB Richard Hayes in the victory….The wild and crazy thing is that Dudley scored to win the game with just nine seconds left in the contest, on a Hayes pass to Brandon Reynolds…..Dudley finishes (5-1) Metro 4-A and as the #2 seed from the conference, after starting the season at (0-4) overall….

Ragsdale won a doozy from High Point Central last night, with a 20-16 final and the Bison turned the ball over, at three key stretches of the game and the Tigers took full advantage of those turnovers…..Marquez Eleazor had a big night rushing for Ragsdale with over 100 yards on the ground and Tiger QB Garrison Herndon had a 60 yard touchdown bomb to Anthony Stewart(?) as Ragsdale ties Northwest Guilford and East Forsyth, for the top spot in the Piedmont Triad 4-A…..Justin Johnson and Woody Cornwell rotated at QB for HPC and Will Johnson nailed a 31-yard FG for Central…..

The Eastern Guilford Wildcats will be headed to the playoffs, coming off of a win over McMichael last night and the ‘Cats were on the prowl, on the ground….EG with 246 yards rushing last night, with Devon Jones running for 107 and a score, plus Milton Walker ran for 83 yarda and a TD and one of Walker’s wild runs, went for 50 yards….EG’s defense held McMichael to 27 yards on 24 carries…

Great finish for Smith seniors Marlon Hughes, who had 4 Golden Eagle TD’s with three on the ground and one a catch…Hughes with 172 yards rushing and 68 receiving…Senior Tevin Tatum led the Smith defense with 18 tackles and 2 sacks….

*****No news on the Southwest Guilford and High Point Andrews wins…We will try and get them from a later source later on today…..*****

  1. This young sw team struggled this year going through adversity but they will be good as thier returning many defensive starters and larry edwards will be back.

  2. So happy for the Ragsdale Tigers’ win over High Point Central last night. QB – Garrison Herndon – threw two WHOPPER TD passes, and Tiger’s ‘D’ came to win as well! Still, the Bison’s played a good, balanced game. Both their QBs, including Jr. QB Woody Cornwell, did a heck of a job! And, their running game wasn’t too shabby.

I know it aint grownup-like to cry over spilled milk; but, it still hurts knowing that had Ragsdale won against NW Guilford on October 7th, they’d be the Piedmont Triad 4A CONFERENCE CHAMPIONS. Hmm, but the same may apply if NW had beaten E Forsythe. Sorry if I got it wrong, I’m somewhat green here.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Eric McCoy and family. His job was certainly never easy – something for us all to remember…

  3. My heart goes out to the Southwest student athletes, faculty and staff–especially the ones that had to witness such a tragedy last night. I’m sincerely hope that these young men will take theses adversities they’ve encountered and turn them into something positive. I’ve seen many things (coming from New York/Connecticut) in my life and I do know that you can overcome. These young men can and will get past this– My heart goes out to them but…I’m rooting for ’em!

  4. Since hearing this tragic news last night, my heart continues to ache for the family of Mr. Eric McCoy. His passing is indeed a tragedy. Also, to all the Ragsdale & HP Central players, coaches & fans who witnessed this tragedy at Simeon Stadium, I hope that you will be comforted knowing that no matter how big the rivalry or how passionate we all are about our “team”, that during a time like this, we all stand together as mankind should, to show our support! May God bless the McCoy family! RIP

  5. Wareagle65 ,we know about Davie Co average regular season that was followed by a real strong playoff run last year. The Panthers have some nice road playoff history as well.
Nothing wrong with you guys being confident , but when you under estimate us that is when your problems start.
    See ya Friiday !!

News on Davie County from the WS Journal……And on senior QB Adam Smith:

    Adam Smith

Last year DC coach Doug Illing of Davie said that he inserted Smith — now 5-foot-10, 165 pounds —as a defensive back midway through last season because of his athletic ability.

Illing knew that Smith would not play quarterback because then senior Carson Herndon had the quarterback position nailed down.

But Smith played well enough on defense last year that Illing is having a hard time getting him off the field now.

“He is 100-percent quarterback and playing some DB,” Illing said. “He’s been getting a lot of reps the last few weeks. He is that type of competitor and that kind of conditioned athlete to handle it well, knock on wood.”

Illing’s run at Davie over the past decade hasn’t featured a quarterback with quite the package of skills that Smith has flashed. Cooter Arnold was the best running quarterback; Garrett Benge was the best passing quarterback. Smith can do both, and he has helped Davie average 29.4 points a game.

He has completed 77 of 142 passes for 1,301 yards and 10 touchdowns, and he is second on the team with 389 rushing yards. He also leads the War Eagles with seven rushing touchdowns.

“He has legit 4.5-(second) speed (over 40 yards),” Illing said. “He is definitely a quarterback, an athletic quarterback. Lenoir-Rhyne is looking at him as a quarterback and we are selling him to others as an athlete, as a defensive back, as a receiver. Everyone wants a 6-3 quarterback, and he’s not that.

“He has great instincts to be a DB in college, but it’s hard to sell when he doesn’t play it 100 percent of the time. We have to sell him as an athlete.”
