HIGH POINT – A referee collapsed on the field near halftime of the football game between High Point Central High School and Ragsdale High School at A.J. Simeon Stadium Friday night.

Emergency medical responders rushed onto the field and used a defibrillator as they treated the back judge official, who fell near 32-yard line. The crowd of 400 people turned silent as the responders treated the official, who was leaving the field after telling head referee Jim Holmes(Southwest Guilford and Western Guilford connections for many years) that he felt dizzy.

Holmes said he told the back judge to head to the sideline and sit down and the other officials would finish the first half without him. As the back judge was walking through the players to reach the bench, he collapsed with 2:32 to play in the second quarter of the game.

The referee was taken by ambulance to High Point Regional Hospital, said High Point Police Department Lt. T.L. Green.(The official/referee, Mr. Eric McCoy, later died and our thoughts and prayers still go out to his family today.)
