Butler will bring a tough brand of football to the NCHSAA playoffs

Matthews Butler defeated Charlotte Independence this past Friday night and along with Mallard Creek, those Charlotte-area teams are bringing a tough brand of football to the NCHSAA playoffs….Don’t count out teams like Richmond County either and the Greensboro-based Page Pirates and Northwest Guilford Vikings will have their say in the 4-AA’s too…..

CLICK HERE to read all from Langston Wertz Jr. at the Charlotte Observer in his look at Butler, Independence and others….In the 3-AA’s and 3-A levels, Charlotte Catholic, Belmont South Point, Concord and Crest will also be hard to beat…..

  1. Don’t forget the Rags dale tigers we are ready to go this Friday night with our first round match up with North Davidson also were going to make them work hard harder then a week of practiced and we are going to beat them out of the playoffs so we can go deep into the play offs lets win this Friday and go far in the playoffs ” LETS GO TIGERS WE CAN DO IT ”

  2. You boys have to cut out the mistakes if you’re going to beat anyone. Lots of potential but potential doesn’t win games. You boys let some people off the hook this year. Make the same mistakes this coming Friday that you made against HPC and there will be tears in the lockerroom. Trust your coaches.

  3. Andy,

Maybe you can use your resources to help shed some light as to why a conference champ (NWG) has to travel to a conference runner-up (Richmond Co)? As it stands, I can’t find any other conference champ either outright or co-champs within 3A /3AA – 4A/ 4AA that doesn’t have a 1rst round home playoff game.

  4. @ Stumped

The PT4A Conference had a 3 way tie for first place, as we all know.

But because of that 3 way tie, mixed together with Ragsdale being 4A. The other two teams, NW Guilford and E. Forsyth are both 4AA. So the ruling is.. if those 2 teams are in the same subdivision (Which they are, 4AA) it comes down to head-to-head, instead of where the teams finshed in the conference with the drawing of straws. Which is why NW Guilford got the 2 seed in the draw. It doesn’t matter if NW Guilford was a conference co-champ.

Since Richmond Co. and NW Guilford both went into the playoffs with the 2 seed out of the conference, and they both had a overall record of 8-2.. they then draw straws to see where the teams get seeded overall in the bracket. So it was a 50/50 chance that NW Guilford got a overall higher seed in the 4AA bracket. Its basically all luck from that stand point.

So, say Ragsdale and NW Guilford were in 4AA, and E Forsyth was 4A. EF would have gotten the automatic 1 seed, and NW Guilford would have gotten the 1 seed in conference as well because they beat Ragsdale head-to-head.

Sound alittle bit more clear now?

  5. Sure I get what your saying about the head to head. But why if both Richmond Co. and NWG are #2 seeds is Richmond Co awarded a 1rst round home playoff game against an opponent that is a conference champ when they finished 2nd in their own conference. I mean heck I get they finished with identical records however Richmond Co. is conference runner-up and lost 2 conference games. NWG went 8-2 only losing 1 conference game.

  6. I understand where you are coming from.. But according to the NCHSAA, it doesn’t matter how many conference losses a team has compared to another when it comes to the overall bracket seeding. Both teams got the 2 seed (out of the conference) and both had the same overall record. that is all that matters, sadly.

  7. However, the NCHSAA does use ‘conference winning percentage’ for a tie breaker on determining which teams are getting in the field. Maybe this should be the way they determine seeding, as well. The bigger problem is the pod system. You have worst teams with worst records and lower overall seedings playing home games, and other than in a few instances travel distances would have been about the same.

  8. Here is the exact explanation, per the NCHSAA handbook and from Rick Strunk of the NCHSAA.

If all three teams were 4A or 4AA, then tie-breaker draw would have been used. But since Northwest Guilford and East Forsyth went 4AA and Ragsdale went 4A, the draw was considered void.

Ragsdale was awarded a #1 conference seed in 4A and East Forsyth was awarded a #1 conference seed in 4AA because of their 35-7 victory over Northwest Guilford.

Northwest was then slotted with the #2 seeds and lost the flip with Richmond County who was also a #2 seed with the same record.

  9. The people that flipped the coin had a two headed coin! Money is the reason Richmond won out over NWG on the seeding! A bigger venue and those rich kids can afford to travel! Nedds to be investigated how they do this junk!…. Oh well!… Let’s go down there and win! Go Vikings and Go Page!!!

  10. It is what it is…..I know your argument but these brackets are official they’re not going to change them sorry! You want to make a statement go down and beat Richmond!!! Just Sayin!!!
