Phenom Quote of the Day: “Success is to be measured not so much by the
position one has reached in life, but by the obstacles which one has
overcome trying to succeed.”

Phenom Hoop Report Philosophy: “Balanced, thorough, and detailed evaluations
based upon the 3 P’s philosophy of Performance, Production, and Potential”

In today’s issue, we will take a look at Part 4 of our series of player
evaluations from the 8th Annual NC Phenom 150 Camp, but before we do, I
wanted to take you back to our archive from June 30th, 2010. You may ask why
in the world would I bring back write ups from over a 18 months ago. The
answer is simple. Why the Phenom Hoop Report is not nationally known, but we
have been on target with many prospects and today, we will take a quick look
at just a few and see how well we performed. The moral of the story is
simple, we get it right!

June 30th, 2010 REVIEW

Player: 6’5 Theo Pinson

High School: Oak Ridge Military

Hometown: Greensboro, NC

Class: 2014

Phenom Hoop Report: HM+

Evaluation: Here’s a simple heads up to all the high majors, this young man
has all the skills, tools, and athleticism to become a high elite level
athlete and player and may become one of the top 10 players in the freshman
class nationally. At 6’5 and GROWING, Pinson is a long, lanky and athletic
wing that has PG ball handling and passing skills. He has extremely “tight”
handles and moves fluidly up the court with his advanced ball handling
skills. In addition, his court vision is excellent and is very unselfish as
he is constantly looking for the open man. Pinson showed good anticipation
on rebounds as he was in the mix for countless rebound opportunities. We
were impressed with his transition game and constantly running the floor
with and without the ball.

11/3/11: Looks like we made the correct call on Pinson

Player: 6’9 Brice Johnson

High School: Edisto High

Hometown: Orangeburg, SC

Class: 2012

Phenom Hoop Report: HM

Johnson is an extremely long, wiry, and athletic PG/WF that has tremendous
hops and runs the floor extremely well. IMHO, Johnson was one of the more
impressive 6’9 players in the loaded 2012 class. Johnson has an unbelievable
wing span and is best in transition. He has a high motor and plays the game
extremely hard. He is a two handed rebounder which is unique for most young
prospects that try to rebound with one hand. He has the 3 P’s going for him.
He had performance, production and potential on his side this summer!

11/3/11: Johnson recently committed to North Carolina, enough said!

Player: 6’5 Jabril Trawick

High School: Abington Friends

Hometown: Philadelphia, PA

Class: 2011

Phenom Hoop Report: HM

Trawick was a virtual unknown coming into the summer, but may have been the
biggest surprise player in the 2011 class. It is difficult to find many
sleepers in 2011 going into their senior year, but Trawick was impressive in
all the games we watched. While he was not listed in anyone’s top 100, he is
most definitely a top 100 player in the 2011 class. Trawick is a strong and
physical combo guard that has the ability to transition into a lead guard at
the next level. Trawick plays with confidence and has a nice all around
game. While Trawick loves to dribble drive and attack the basket, he also
sports an excellent mid range games. He has a nasty hesitation dribble drive
pull up that is deadly. His shot has good mechanics and fundamentals and has
the skills to become a major contributor at a high level in college. He has
the 3 P’s on his side: Performance, production and potential.

11/3/11: Trawick was under the radar and he eventually signed with
Georgetown, but few people really knew of him prior to last summer.

Player: 6’8 Jackson Simmons

High School: Smoky Mountain

Hometown: Sylva, NC

Class: 2011

Phenom Hoop Report: HM-

We have already mentioned Simmons play over the past year and especially
this spring, but in his head to head matchup with Jacob Lawson, Simmons may
have won the battle (individual) but lost the war. (Team lost) In the semi
final game vs. Raleigh Middle Creek, Smoky Mountain overcame a half time
deficit for an impressive 8 point win. In the game vs. Middle Creek, Simmons
nickname could have been the “Index Man” as he was simply “cleaning the
glass” and getting every defensive rebound. There are not many players in
the country that have better rebounding fundamentals (a lost art) than
Simmons. When the shot goes up, he is constantly looking for a player to box
out and once he grabbed the rebound, he does an excellent job of keeping the
ball high above his head with elbows out and makes a two handed outlet pass.
(Textbook from Wes Unseld) Once he makes the outlet, he is running the floor
in transition and works extremely hard on offense by moving without the
ball.

11/3/11: Yes, Simmons was one of my players that I coached over the years
with the Carolina Flight. Many people thought I was somewhat bias and with
good reason. While many people stated Simmons didn’t have the athleticism to
compete at the next level, I knew differently. Signed with UNC

Player: 5’11 Javan Felix

High School: St. Augustine

Hometown: New Orleans, LA

Class: 2012

Phenom Hoop Report: HM-

Felix is a strong and powerful PG in a 5’11 frame, but what makes Felix so
effective is his ability to knock down open jumpers. His jump shot is
textbook and has outstanding mechanics and fundamentals on his shot. Besides
being an effective spot up shooter, he is really good off the dribble and
has mastered the teardrop floater in the lane.

11/3/11: Was anybody in the country touting Felix as a HM prospect 2 summers
ago? Probably not but we were at the Phenom Hoop Report. Will play for Rick
Barnes of Texas

Now, we will take a look at Part 4 of our series of evaluations from the NC
Phenom 150 Camp. Advance notice: Pay close attention

Player: Muhammed Muhammed

Hometown: Durham, NC

School: Durham Riverside

Height: 6’3

Class: 2015

Evaluation: Muhammed is a promising young freshman with good potential and
upside. He has an excellent attitude and has a tremendous work ethic on the
basketball court. More importantly, Muhammed is a fierce competitor. He
plays extremely hard and competes on each possession. He has a nice blend of
athleticism and skill and is a solid all around player. He has a good
midrange jumper and can step out and knock down 3’s on a consistent basis.
He has good length and can use his speed and quickness to get into the lane
with relative ease. He has smoothness to his game and could be a future star
in the class of 2015 in North Carolina.

Player: Derrick Bass

Hometown: Timberlake, NC

School: Person HS

Height: 6’5

Class: 2013

Evaluation: Derrick has good athleticism and length that can transition into
the next level. He has a great attitude and work ethic and is an excellent
rebounder. He is the ultimate team player, in the fact that he does not
demand the ball, but has a knack for getting rebounds and loose balls. He
has good passing skills and is very unselfish player. While he is solid
offensively, his biggest strength may be his ability to play hardnosed
defense. He uses his length appropriately by getting his long arms up to
contest opposing player’s jumper. The next step in his development is to
work on his perimeter skills to be an effective player at the D1 level.

Player: James Hempfield

Hometown: Raleigh, NC

School: Raleigh Broughton

Height: 6’6

Class: 2013

Evaluation: James is a fundamentally sound basketball player with good
basketball IQ. He plays extremely hard on both ends of the court and is the
ultimate team player. James is a hustle player that seems to get a lot of
loose ball and rebounds. On the offensive end, James has solid mechanics on
his shot although improvements can be made on a quicker release. James has
average athleticism, but it will be his continued work ethic and desire that
will be able to push him into the D1 category. At the end of the day, James
is very coachable and plays the game the right way. The next step in his
development is to increase foot speed and lateral quickness. With the
correct work ethic, James can be a solid D1 prospect.

Player: Chandler Peraldo

Hometown: Greensboro, NC

School: Northwest Guilford

Height: 5’9

Class: 2015

Evaluation: Chandler is a fundamentally sound and has a tremendous work
ethic. He has a great understanding of the game. Offensively, he has a nice
arsenal of advanced ball handling skills and is very crafty with the ball.
He has solid shooting mechanics and is a dead eye shooter from the 3 point
line. While mostly noted an advanced ball handler and shooter, Chandler made
an impression with his hustle and hard work on the defensive end of the
ball. Chandler has good speed and foot speed and this helped him immensely
by applying pressure defense. He was more assertive on the defensive end of
the floor and showcased his overall well balanced game. He has 4 years of
high school ahead of him and what level he plays will be determined by his
continued work ethic and desire.

Player: Jalen Barnes

Hometown: Raleigh, NC

School: Wakefield

Height: 5’11

Class: 2013

Evaluation: Barnes was one of the surprise players at the event. Jalen has
excellent speed and quickness and is tremendous in the open court. He has
good court vision and has no trouble getting into the lane. Jalen has a good
combination of speed, athleticism and overall fundamentals that could make
him a potential D1 prospect. He does sport a nice midrange pull up jumper
and is adequate from the 3 point line. He has outstanding ball handling
skills, but he also makes a big impact on the defensive end of the court. He
has quick feet and excellent lateral quickness. The next step in his
development is to continue to becoming a well rounded player and getting
stronger and becoming a better shooter from the perimeter.

Player: Steve Robinson

Hometown: Mebane, NC

School: Eastern Alamance

Height: 5’7

Class: 2014

Evaluation: Steve is simply a blur on the court. He has amazing speed,
quickness and overall athleticism. He has a great attitude and work ethic to
go along with his solid decision making and basketball knowledge. He is a
fierce competitor on the court and has the heart of a lion. While he may be
small in stature, he will not back down from any challenge. He uses his
freakish athleticism in a positive manner and has a solid offensive arsenal.
He can get by any defender and finish at the rim or utilize his midrange
pull up jumper and can even knock down the 3 ball. He is an absolute pest on
defense. The next stage in his development is to continue to get bigger and
stronger. He has 3 more years of high school basketball and could develop
into a D1 prospect.

Player: Alston Thompson

Hometown: Durham, NC

School: Durham Hillside

Height: 6’5

Class: 2015

Evaluation: Aslton is a talented young freshman that has good length and
athleticism. He has a good attitude and is a solid team player. He does a
good job of getting out in transition. He has a solid all around game, but
it is apparent that is skill set has completely matched up against his
potential and athleticism. That being said, Alston has the potential to be a
legit D1 prospect with continued work ethic, desire and determination. The
next step for him to get physically stronger and continue to work on his
skill sets.

Player: Brayden Masten

Hometown: Winston-Salem, NC

School: RJ Reynolds

Height: 6’8

Class: 2013

Evaluation: Brayden has the physical intangibles for be a legit D1
prospect. He has a good attitude and solid work ethic, but the biggest
attribute is his ability to shoot the basketball. He is a 6’8 PF that has
good mechanics on his jump shot. Brayden enjoyed a solid camp, but what you
see now is not the finished product he could be by his senior season.
Brayden does have good fundamentals and a high basketball IQ. The next step
in his development is to play with more intensity and urgency. When you’re
6’8 and have a good shooting touch, the sky is the limit regards to
potential

Player: Cody Hylton

Hometown: Colfax, NC

School: Northwest Guilford

Height: 6’3

Class: 2013

Evaluation: Cody is a hard working fundamentally sound player with a high
basketball IQ. His biggest strength is his ability to shoot with outstanding
range. Without question, Cody may be one of the best 3 point shooters in the
state for the class of 2013. His mechanics on his shot is excellent and is
at his best in a catch and shoot situation. The next step in his development
is to create his own shot off the dribble and improve his foot speed and
lateral quickness.

Player: Terrence Wells

Hometown: Cary, NC

School: Apex

Height: 5’9

Class: 2014

Evaluation: Terrence is a promising young PG that has a blend of athleticism
and fundamentals. He has a great attitude and work ethic. Terrence has
outstanding quickness and does possess good court vision. He does a good job
of keeping his head up on his dribble. In addition, he has good mechanics on
his jump shot. Terrence competes extremely hard on the defensive end of the
court. That being said, Terrence is definitely a young prospect to watch on
the recruiting trail. While he is small in stature, he has 3 years of growth
and maturity in front of him. He has the physical and basketball knowledge
to be a potential D1 prospect.

Player: Tyquan Bitting

Hometown: Winston-Salem, NC

School: Mt. Tabor

Height: 6’7

Class: 2013

Evaluation: Tyquan is a long and athletic PF that has a great attitude and
work ethic. Tyquan has a huge upside and plays under control and has a good
understanding of the game. He has a solid midrange game, and has good
footwork in the paint. He can post up on the low block or step out and hit
the face up jumper from the elbow. On the defensive end of the floor, Tyquan
did a good job of boxing out and getting his up to contest shots. He does
have good length and hopefully Tyquan can have a breakout year at Mt. Tabor.
Without question, he has D1 potential and just needs more confidence on the
high school front. He is definitely a player for schools in the Big South
and Southern Conference should monitor his progress.

Player: Steven Williams

Hometown: High Point, NC

School: High Point Christian

Height: 5’10

Class: 2014

Evaluation: Steven is a solid PG that has good fundamentals and high
basketball IQ. He has good court vision and is a true pass first floor
general. One of his biggest strengths is his ability to play hard and
compete on each possession. He has a good attitude and work ethic and is
very solid on the defensive end of the floor. He has good speed and lateral
quickness. The next step in his development is to get physically bigger and
stronger.

Player: David Belfield

Hometown: Charlotte, NC

School: Charlotte Catholic

Height: 6’2

Class: 2013

Evaluation: David has a great attitude and work ethic. He has outstanding
fundamentals and a high basketball IQ and can play either guard position.
David plays hard and loves competing and it clearly shows up in his effort
and desire. David also understands how to play the right way and play within
the team structure. He is very unselfish and gets as much joy as making the
extra pass as scoring himself. The next step in his development is to
develop additional ball handling skills to make the transition to PG at the
next level easier. His basic skill set and understanding of the game should
make him a solid D1 prospect.

Player: Logan Evans

Hometown: Raleigh, NC

School: Raleigh Wakefield

Height: 6’6

Class: 2013

Evaluation: Logan is an extremely long and athletic wing that can play on
the interior on in the post. You can tell he probably plays the post on his
high school team as he has good interior moves. He has a great attitude and
work ethic and has a good understanding of the game. Currently, his defense
is more advanced than his offense and has the length and athleticism to
defend at the D1 level. His offense is still a work in progress and will
need to develop a midrange game to his arsenal, plus it will be important
for him to create his own shot off the dribble. That being said, Logan has
the desire and determination to be a really good player with continued hard
work

  1. I think you should go over to Grimsley High School and checkout a freshman by the name of John Puryear. He’s very athletic, runs the floor very well, has great vision of the floor and looks for the open man. He can hit the short jumper or the the three pointer when needed.

  2. We should be over there pretty soon…..All over it in a big way as soon as our football clears up……Who is coaching the Grimsley JV’s this year…..Coach Evan Fancourt went down to Southern Guilford to join up with Greg Thonpson’s program…..

  3. Wonder if that Steve Robinson is the son of the assistant coach by the same at the University of North Carolina???

  4. @ Andy, Steve Robinson is a kid from Graham. He plays at Eastern Alamance. His dad is not that “Steve Robinson”, but his name is Steve Robinson. Tough kid!
