  1. Halftime Page 28 NWG 19

Page had 1st and 10 on the NW 12 but Summers threw his second INT.

Page gets the ball first in the second hl. Summers not having a good night passing. NW made some incredibly dumb decisions that has given page short field for easy TDs. Still a long way to go

  3. Page better get a passing game next week or they are going to end their playoff season. 3 Int tonight? 1 completed pass? We can’t run the ball each and every time. Come on pirates pull it together and get a plan to beat Butler. Need a passing game too folks!

  4. WOW what a football game!!! If not for some poor decisions by NWG this would have been a lot closer game. Going for it twice on 4th down seemed like a bad call for NWG so early in the game. Of course the coaches would have been heros if the team would have converted the 4th downs.

It was a very exciting game and the Page defense really stepped it up in the second half. Even though Summers had some really bad passes and a couple of picks he bounced back nicely with some long runs.

John please don’t blow it with some over the top comment. Page looks like a playoff contender. I guess like all year they made some outstanding coaching adjustments in the lockerroom and really seem to turn it on in the second half. Ditto tonight.

I can’t wait for next wek!!!

  5. Playoff time brings out the best in EVERYONE!!! Southwest threw the kitchen sink, the toilet, shoot—the WHOLE house at us tonight! But….we’re still standing! I knew (as soon as I sat down) that this game would be decided by the defense. My hat goes off to Orlando Hatfield and that darn Ed Britt! Ed…..you did ya THING!
    .
Whelp—–this one’s behind us. Butler????—welcome to Guilford County!!!!!

Another note—anyone have any information on the ejection? From what I saw…never mind! I’m glad we kept our heads!
    .
    Go Pirates!!!!

  6. opppps. Northwest! My bad….got a lot on my mind. BTW—Heading back to Charlotte. Please pray for my mother. I’m setting her up in hospice in the morning.

  7. UU, uh,,,,,,,,,,, that would be Northwest, not Southwest that threw the kitchen sink at you. And I’m sorry but if you let NWG score 25 on you, you have some issues. They have world class speed but struggle a bit at the LOS.

  8. @ u played– you’re exactly right! Those young men looked as if they had the speed of demons! I was like “God Gosh!” Lol!!! At any cost, I’m glad this one’s behind us. I was sad to see the Northwest fans leaving with so much time left on the clock. They missed a darn good spectacular play by Northern. I tellya, those boys threw everything they could at us tonight. I’m not even going to sit here and NOT give them credit. They’re GOOD! Note—the 25 points they put up tonight was the most (I’m almost positive) we’ve had against us all year. THAT ought to tell ya something!

  9. Darn it! NorthWEST! I’m sorry folks!

Please pray for my mom. The only thing left for her right now is to ease her suffering. I gotta bounce but….play NICE in here!!

    Underdogs Unite!!!

  10. UU, thoughts and prayers for your mom, so sorry to hear that.

Good win, kinda sloppy at times, but it’s the playoffs and you don’t get style points.

Whoever said Page needs a passing game is correct. Summers threw 3 picks tonight. Credit NWG’s speed in the secondary for at least 2 picks and the other I think the NWG player just snatched the ball away. The Vikings had some great skill players, plenty of quick guys. But what doomed them was the decision-making by their coaching staff. Going for it on 4th down deep in their own territory, the fake punt, both times they gave Page a short field and both times Page got TDs.

The third quarter, Page dominated the time of possession. But they only came away with 2 points. They had a TD gift-wrapped but for some reason Drew Rogers decided to reverse his field and got nailed for a big loss and Page then missed a field goal.

But once again Page’s defense came through and on special teams, too. Two blocked punts, one for a safety the other set up a TD. Page blitzed effectively and disrupted the passing of NWG’s QB. And did Page hit tonight. These kids know how to lay the wood.

But…one completed pass? Seriously? You can’t beat Butler that way. And you can’t be -2 on turnovers, either.

It really gets interesting now. We will see if Summers can get something going through the air. But, as I pointed out a few weeks ago, defense wins games.

Hats off to Northwest tonight and congrats to Coach Gillespie and the Page Pirates.

  11. Congrats 2 the PAGE PIRATES…. So Vikings, how’d that COW BELL RINGING turn out 4 ya….lol… Looking forward 2 next Friday… But Summer’s has definitely got to get a passing game going but that won’t happen if he keeps passing it to #7….He drops, misses or gets ripped of the ball every single game… Sorry… just saying…

  12. DId u just tell Butler welcome to Guilford Co? lol, it was a great season for your pirates, no doubt….all good things must come to an end. It should read more like, Page, this is what big time football looks like! I called this game at the beginning of the season, man im good, Butler 27 Page 14.

    Vegas Mike

P.S. For what its worth, this years Page team has been one of the best Piedmont teams I have seen in the past 15 years, I hope you beat the snot out of Butler, I just think they are at another level.

  13. Wow, well Page the spotlight definitely is on you now for sure. All of Guilford County will be at Kirby Stadium to see if this Red Machine can live up to all of that “we beat the Charlotte teams 7 on 7 hype” that we all heard back in July. Yep, things certainly get interesting from here as if Page is fortunate enough to get past Butler, Mallard Creek will be waiting to greet the Pirates at their place. My heart says that Page CAN survive Butler but t will be very tough. Injury reports? Hope everyone is healthy and ready to go! The INTs will kill you next week.

    Who to pick:

Page playing the game of its life:

    Page 28
    Butler 21

    Page showing signs of struggle:

    Butler 40+

  14. IMO take away #18’s legs and Page is a very mediocre team. I don’t really think Page was 19 points better than NWG. Yes NWG had some costly mistakes giving Page a short field which was converted into points. Poor Special Teams play really hurt the Vikings along with a few questionable penalties. Gosh NWG had double/triple the flags thrown on them, ref’s should have just bought tickets and watched the game from the Home sideline. I will compliment the Page defense particularly the outside linebackers, they gave the Vikings fits. I’m sorry I’m all for Guilford Co. football but I think Page just enjoyed their last win!

  15. John, to your commnet – Saw Putnam complete some pretty good passes last week – last night – nowhere to be seen – not sure why you would start one game and be a no show at another? James has the fanciest footwork around – and definitely powerd the ball forward last night. Page needs to be more creative going forward to take this all the way.

  16. To Class of ’92 – agreed. a lot of great receivers on the field – Greene, Spain just to name two – most people know where this ball will go, Summers, Rogers or Hatfiled – easy to try and defend three people – if we opne it up more – would have a better chance. To Page Observer – agreed – my son played 1 year of JV with Putnam and he can definitely pass the ball and make some plays – not sure why Page chose not to use more Summers and Putnam in tandom this year. Page has a ton of talent – they should use more of them.

  17. There is still a lot of room for improvement in the Page passing game. And the receivers will be the first to say that they need to step it up and make those plays.

  18. What happened last night at the Page game last night. The refs seemed to call a bad game last night on both sides of the field. Its a shame that a ref doesnt throw a flag when the play is right in front of him and it takes another ref to throw the flag 20 yards down field because the other ref wouldnt throw it. Incomplete passes called as complete, possession turnover when the call should or been a dead ball foul, two refs of the one sideline and the one who doesnt belong on the sideline throws a flag when his position was not a sideline judge. One thing they did get right was throwing the NWG player out of the game. Why would another player try and hurt another player when the whistle was blown, not let up, throw down, and then stomp on him. There needs to be something more then an ejection done to the player who did that. The problem is nothing will be done except he will go back to school as a loser, but he brag about what he done and he will be a hero. Sorry state of affairs. We need better refs all around and the coaches need to teach discipline to these players.

  19. Why is noone talking about northern…..they havent played a close game since week 1!!!!!! They are the best team in guilford county for sure if they played Page again they would DESTROY THEM!

  20. Just a note,

NW probably doesn’t score 25 if the ref wouldn’t have called a pass complete (On NW’s last scoring drive), that was about as incomplete as it gets in football. The ball clearly hit the ground, bounced, and was scooped up. The ref’s back was turned and when he turned around to rule the play, all he saw was the ball in the receiver’s hands.

For anyone that has access to film, go back and take a look at this one. One of the worst calls I’ve seen in a long time by a referee. No wonder Page’s coaches got a personal foul for arguing with the refs about it. Horrible horrible call.

Also whats the deal with that kid that threw down Summers after the whistle and then tried to stomp on him when he tried to get up? Classless kid, if I were his parents, I would be embarrassed. Coach Woodruff should be embarrassed too.

  21. Razzle Dazzle said “Take away 18’s legs and Page is a very mediocre team.” Whatever. Things always look different when you are on the wrong end of the final score. As for the officiating, I thought NWG got a very favorable call on the pass completion that set up their final TD. On the touchdown pass, the refs missed a block in the back right in front of them. But I’m certain Page got a couple of calls, too, so it probably balanced out. I’ve certainly seen worse officiating than last night. And Razzle, those “costly mistakes” were the fault of your head coach who decided to go for it TWICE on fourth down in NWG’s own territory. And who decided on a fake PAT kick in favor of a gadget play. Those were not mistakes. A mistake is when you forget to tie your shoe. Those were very stupid decisions.

It must be said, without calling out any Page players by name, that at least 3 of Summers’ passes were easy catches that were dropped. I fully agree that Page has to improve its passing game.

#65 on NWG got thrown out and deservedly so. Getting caught up in the emotion is one thing; trying to intentionally injure a player when he’s down is another. If that kid is a junior he should be suspended for the first few games of next season. No excuse for that. Just thuggish behavior.

Page Observer, I think Putnam started last Friday due to Summers’ being disciplined for missing a practice that week. I’m not sure you want to go to the QB tandem in the playoffs. Summers has gotten the team this far. Perhaps Coach Gillespie needs to call some more high percentage pass plays that play to James’ strengths. I do know that dropped passes and 3 picks will doom the Pirates against a team as talented as Butler.

I don’t know how next Friday’s game will turn out. It’s nice to have home field advantage. I don’t think Page needs to get into a shoot-out with Butler. The second half of last night’s game showed how tough Page’s defense can be. After getting gashed in the first half, the D settled down and held NWG to 24 yards total offense until the late TD.

  22. @ NORTHERN,

You’re clearly joking. Page whipped up on Northern. Northern wanted nothing to do with Page’s physicality in that game, and it would be very similar if they played again this year.

  23. I think a Northern-Page rematch would be interesting. Page caught Northern early in the season. I think Page still has the horses to beat them but I think it would be a much closer game.

  24. Northern would destroy Page if they played again and Logan was able to stay on the field….Northen is playing better than anybody in the state I totally expect them to march down to Byrd next friday and lay the wood on them. REPEAT.

  25. Yes I agree with most of your comment however I think NWG was flagged almost twice as much as Page. I’ve never seen so many blatant holding calls ignored as I witnessed Page getting away with. Sure it could be said that on almost every play someone is holding but man was is apparent last night on almost everyone of Page’s toss plays.

Now also regarding the ejection Page was very physical last night but there were several times that there was some extra stuff going on after the whistle was blown. I witness several times Page shoving NWG players down after the whistle was blown holding them down on the ground a few extra seconds. Finally NWG starting shoving back a little even then I witnessed a defensive back for Page grab the facemask of a NWG wide receiver almost directly in front of the sideline Ref. When the NWG player approached the ref he simply held out his hand and shooed him away. You can blame that little altercation at the end, in which what I saw was a Page player coming in late and hitting the NWG after making the tackle on #18 squarely on those Refs. They should have stopped that shoving and extra circular stuff going on early in that game. As far as discipline, without a shadow of a doubt Coach Woodruff will have some sort of disciplinary action as that was the only time all season anything like that has happened to the NWG football team. Furthermore, the extra shoving by the Page team must be condoned and welcomed by the Page coaching staff as it usually starts there and I do remember an Unsportsman like thrown on the Page coaching staff for something that was directed toward the Ref.

But truly NWG lost this game themselves too many costly mistakes and taking chances when maybe not necessary. NWG catch a few breaks here and there and we could very easily could be talking about NWG moving on the the 3rd round

  26. Easy, Action. Logan not being 100 percent in that Page game was not the reason your team lost. Unless Logan also plays on the defensive line, that is. Page lined it up in the power-I formation in the second half, and ran the ball down Northern’s throat. Logan may have had a couple of nice runs, but Northern’s defense was clearly overmatched.

It would be a good game between two talented teams. I think Page would win, but it would be a close game.

  27. Anyone see NWG coach’s pregame speech on TV? I was SHOCKED to hear a coach use the “L” word (“lose”) multiple times. Basically, he said, if we lose, let’s not lose by making mistakes, let’s lose playing good football so we can say the better team won. What? Just to be fair, he did go on to say, we are a good team and to go out and battle til the end yada yada. Those 4th down decisions were costly – tough to ask a defense to defend such a short field against a talented Page offense. But CONGRATS to NWG on another good season. NWG will be good again next year with many returning players and a ton of talent in the backfield. Of course, replacing Palowski will be tough. Good Luck Page – bring that trophy to Greensboro!

  28. Ref Training; here’s the stats from the paper this morning:

    Penalties: Northwest 11-117; Page 8-70.

11 penalties for NWG, and 8 for Page. Nowhere close to NWG being flagged twice as much.

Page has had multiple penalties for unsportsmanlike conduct and yeah, it’s a problem. But while I don’t condone the pushing and shoving, it’s…pushing and shoving. The NWG committed a flagrant foul that could have resulted in an injury. That can’t be gainsaid.

As for holding calls, I saw plenty of them not being called on NWG, as well.

  29. Hey John,

You should be your comments to @ref training.

    In response to @ref training:

You must be a NWG fan. I am not a fan or either team. The ref that threw the flag at the page coach was the same ref who called a complete pass that should of been incomplete. I guess you cant ask a question because if you do you will be penalized. The officials were horrible but NWG lost due to some bad coaching decisions.

  30. Northern is a great team. Good luck to them moving forward. Why are any of the Northern fans caught up in what happened in the past? The past is the past, let it go and move on. Page is also a great team. They have issues to work out, but they did put 44 on the board while leaving some missing out on a couple of scoring opportunities. Drops and forced throws to covered receivers while ignoring open ones in the middle of the field will not get it done going into the later rounds.

  31. I’m a Northern fan. I hate when others say, “if we played again…blah blah blah”. Too late for that. Page beat us. We had our chance. Our first 3 games were against 4A Teams and we won 2 of 3 (NWG, Dudley), so no one can say we played a weak schedule. We have no choice but to play the teams in our conference, but we chose to play very good non-conference teams. Both Northern and Page improved over the course of the year. As much as I would like to say that Northern would win a re-match, I believe Page would win again (hopefully by not quite as much). Right now, it’s time to focus on the playoffs. Northern is a VERY GOOD football team. Page is a VERY GOOD football team. The two best players in the Triad are on these teams (Summers, Logan). Nothing would be better than to see both teams go all the way.

  32. There is only one way to stop this from happening in high school football games. If a player is called on one, he cant play the rest of the game. If it is a flagrant unsportsmanlike conduct he cannot play for the next 3 games. As for the coaches, they should be fined.

  33. Sportmanship in high school athletics will continue to get worse until parents, players, coaches, and officials decide they’ve had enough. It’s been over 20 yrs since I’ve competed at the high school level, but I can tell you that sportsmanship is fading faster than the cassette tape. I have a brother who is a senior RB at Azusa Pacific. I have another brother who is at Independence CC. The baby is a Jr starting RB at SEG. I’ve watched/followed them all through their football careers. The on field behavior has gotten progressively worse over those years. It goes beyond trash talk. I wish we could mic players. I think some of you would be shocked to hear what goes on on a high school football field. I know for a fact ‘some’ refs hear it and just ignore/pretend like they don’t. The general attitude seems to be that the behavior isn’t a problem until it escalates.

I understand that Page fans are upset and you should be, but we all have kids doing and saying things that have no business on a ‘high school’ athletic field. I think we need to all take a stand by policing ourselves and our programs first. Let’s make ourselves accountable as parents. Let’s make our coaches accountable as mentors for our young men.

  34. Damon,

While I agree with everything you said. Saying something and physically stomping on a kid while he is down is very different.

  35. Page players took cheap shots all game. But of course the one retaliation shot NWG kid took and he is some monster? C’mon man, had than penalty been against someone other than Golden Boy we wouldn’t even be talking about it. Still blame the Refs for not stopping the after the whistle stuff within the first couple of minutes of the game. As far as the Ref that dropped the flag on the Page coaching staff and calling a pass complete when incomplete. You must be talking about the same Ref that early in the game called a player than was clearly down and ruled it a fumble giving the ball to Page. Yeah that Ref was pretty bad.

  36. No one deserves to be stomped with a cleat. I don’t care who kid it is. It could have been the 3rd string tailback. There is no place for it on a high school football field. I don’t think I see anyone from Page claiming their kids are saints. I don’t see anyone from Page saying they’ve never had an unsportsmanlike penalty this year. They’re just saying those were the actions of a coward.

  37. Vegas Mike…

Scotland is a beast. The game wasn’t as close as the final score. This is without a doubt the best team that SEG has faced all year long. They started pulling their starters midway through the 3rd or this could have been worse. I truly believe they could have scored 100 if they wanted. There was nothing we did better than them. They even tied their shoes better!

  38. I think Scotland County is the best team in the state this year. Better then Mallard Creek, Page, and Butler. Too bad they are small 4A this year. We want to see the best play the best

  39. I didn’t want to bring up the refs in my earlier post but you guys are right. That crew and especially the ref that missed the incompletion and then threw the flag on the Page coach did not have a good game last night. I do agree that they seemed to be pretty much equally bad for each side. Hopefully the powers that be will get a better crew next week. At this point in the season they need the best in the state refing these games. They let the game get a out of control. I could not believe my eyes when the NW kid walked over the back of the Page player. That kid should be banned from football…period.

In any case better luck next year NW. You had a good run but it has come to an end and it is time to move on. The game really was not as close as the final score and the final score was really not that close.

Northern folks please try to get over your inferiority complexes. You have a good team so try to win the game(s) that you will actually be playing this year. No need to relive a loss that you would surely suffer to Page if you played them again. Win the games in your division and bring home a title to Guilford County.

  40. Damon,
I had a bad feeling heading down there this would happen…heard they were “BEASTS” as well, I personally have not seen them play, on the other hand… I have seen both Butler and Mallard Creek play and those are the two best teams I have seen… a lot of sources close to me are telling me the Scots are even better!! I wish i could have seen that game b/c Im here to tell you right now, in all of my years of seeing high school football, this years Mallard Creek is the most impressive team i have EVER seen, EVER!! SE will be tough again next year, nothing to hang there heads about, they ran into a MONSTER!
Would like to see Scotland vs. Mallard Creek. That would make ESPN!!

  42. Greensboro has some Dumb A High School football fans..only place I know of where people, fans, assistant coaches or whoever talk trash about other teams players, coaches, refs.

  43. Why would anybody be mad right now…..Everybody ought to be happy…..We still have two local teams in the playoffs as we head to Round Three…..All the fans that are not following Northern Guilford down to Fayetteville, need to be over at Marion Kirby Stadium for Page-Matthews Butler next Friday night…..Big game and should be big time fun and atmosphere for the players and the fans…….

Two teams left in Page and Northern….Let’s support our Guilford County teams……

  44. if you were actually watching the NW player was jumping over James Summers and never touched him!

  45. The ref saw it just like everyone else did.. There is no other reason why he would be escorted off the field by the head ref then..

  46. @ Northern…PLEASE……..u should’a, u think u could’a but u DIDN’T & STILL WOULDN’T… even if they played again….. yes, at some point or time every team has had some “unsportsman like” behavior but it never fails, Northwest football and basketball players take it to awhole different level, to behavior and plays that lead to flagrant fouls as was witnessed Friday night… yes the ref definitely saw it…. as far as the ref that made some horrible calls that really made you shake your head.. Ref Richard is terrible.. he can’t call football or basketball…..
