LYNCHBURG, VA — Sophomore keeper Carter Smith (Greensboro, NC/Grimsley) made a combined 20 saves over the weekend to help send the Randolph College men’s soccer team to the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 and for that he has been named WildCat of the Week.

Smith played the best game of his career against No. 2 Christopher Newport University Saturday night in a stunning 2-1 victory for the WildCats. Smith made numerous saves on point-blank shots, finished with nine stops in the win over the Captains.

“They were coming down at us the whole game, but our defense held strong,” said Smith. “I felt good Saturday. Normally with crowds this big I get a bit angry, and it affects my play but today I enjoyed the moment. It was fun to play in this game (vs. CNU).”

Yesterday(Sunday) against DeSales University, Smith stopped 11 of the Bulldogs attempts in a 3-2 second round victory. Smith also used his 6-4 frame to prevent any corners or long throw-ins from becoming dangerous. On the season, Smith has 72 saves and is 13-5 in his 18 starts.

Randolph will now set its attention to the Sweet 16 and Friday’s contest against the Patriots of the University of Texas-Tyler at the University of Redlands in Redlands, CA. Time for the game still to be determined.
