Greensboro College Men’s Basketball Rolls Johnson & Wales, 96-71

The Greensboro College men’s basketball team picked up a big season opening win over Johnson & Wales on Tuesday by a final count of 96-71. The Pride were aided by a pair of first half runs that helped turn an early deficit into a runaway.
Greensboro jumped out to early leads of 7-2 and 11-5 before the Wildcats of Johnson & Wales made their move. With 11:30 showing on the first half clock, the Wildcats held a 22-13 advantage.

The lead would not last long, however, as The Pride opened up a 13-3 run over the course 4:35 to go on top 26-25. Leading 32-30 with 3:52 remaining in the first half, Greensboro kicked off a 13-2 spurt to extend the margin to 45-32. The Pride would go into the break ahead 45-34.

The second half was all Greensboro, as The Pride took control from the start. It took less then four minutes to push the lead to 20 at 60-40. The second half was highlighted by a pair of alley-oop dunks from T.J. Holman and Darius Beresford. Beresford’s dunk brought the score to its largest margin at 96-67.

Chakiris Moss finished the night with a double-double, recording ten points and ten assists. He also tallied five steals and a pair of rebounds. Leading the way in points for The Pride were Damian Dixon and Holman with 18 apiece. Brock Moorman also reached double figures in scoring with ten.

Overall, ten Greensboro players scored points. In addition, The Pride’s starting five of Donald Anderson, Dixon, Moss, Holman and Moorman combined to shoot 22-35 from the floor.

As a team, The Pride finished the game shooting 56.7% while limiting Johnson & Wales to 42.1%. Greensboro narrowly edged the Wildcats on the board, 34-33.

“We definitely got off to a slow start with poor defensive pressure,” said head coach Bryan Galuski. “I thought we were able to take control towards the end of the half and had some spurts in the second that showed what we are capable of. It was a good game to get under our belt before tomorrow’s battle.”

Greensboro will be back in action on Wednesday, November 16, when cross-town rival Guilfrod makes a trip to Hanes Gymnasium. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. following the women’s game.
