  1. Freddy should be ashamed for scheduling that game. No wonder he has so many wins. Howdy Doody could win with a schedule like that. If you want to act like you are good play somebody good every game, not every two weeks. All those people who promote these private schools that go out and bring players in as being great basketball programs should go to a few more of their games and see how bad most of their competition is. I know East Davidson is a public school but it is a 2A school out in Davidson County that doesn’t recruit and works with kids who live in their district. Why GDS would choose them as an opponent is beyond belief. I guess they just wanted another “W” for their record book. They should all be embarassed.

  2. Greensboro Day had upcoming games with UNC JV’s and then later on in December they will play Southwest Guilford at SWG….SWG is very strong public school competition….

  3. Get over it, quit crying, they are all the same age. Private schools cannot recruit. They banned a private school in Charlotte this year from post seaspn play for recruiting. A lot of the public schools will not play privates. Public schools recruit more than the private ones by using the academies.. The reason all these transfers are taking place are for 2 reasons, re-classifying and in the case of the GDS better coaching.

  4. Someone please tell Carolina and Duke and every other major college that they must play top 25 teams every game because this guy says you arent good unless you do. Two of the best schools in the entire state played today, regardless of public or private, against notsogood publics. It happens. Both of them would blow out a lot of decent teams too. HPCA seemed to show quite a bit more mercy than the GDS score seems to indicate, but you can’t play juggernauts every game. For either one of these teams to have big years they have to beat good teams which they play plenty of. The battle between GDS, HPCA, and Wesleyan should be a good one.

  5. @jewel
Hate to say it but this isn’t middle school basketball anymore. So drop the middle school comments about Freddy trying to add “easy wins” to his “record” book. Have you ever considered that maybe East Davidson approached Freddy about scheduling a game so that they could have a chance to play an elite private school?
    P.S.
I don’t think anyone should be embarrassed about have a good basketball team. UNC wasn’t embarrassed when they beat Tennessee State 102-69…As an East fan GDS has no reason to be embarrassed for putting on a clinic.

  6. Greensboro Day School can go about 10 deep. They have the deepest team that I have seen in a long time.. All really good players. No big time college recruits yet but the younger players may develop. They defeinetely have players that will play at the next level but where I do not know. To win in any competetion a coach has to surround himself with good players and mold those players into a unit of one. That is what the Day School is good at, no one better. Good coaches and good players is a good recipe.

  7. How about when GDs opened their season AT Christ School and Greenfield. I guess those were sure Ws. GDS plays a tough schedule, get over it.

  8. GDS is a very well coached team that is also very deep. That is a good set up for a very successful team. They play extremely hard on both ends of the court.

  9. I have heard that the Guilford Co Adm people have suggested or required for a number of years that the local teams not play the private schools like GDS, Oak Ridge, (now the Thomasville Prep’s), Westchester, etc.. type of schools. Maybe many of these high schools are afriad to play top level competition but maybe they are being told behind closed doors not to schedule such teams. The whole “Stan” and Northern Guilford issue was one of the main reasons behind this drama was what was explain to me. Regardless, I will say without a doubt that schools like GDS, Thomasville Prep, and Weseylan will play more “tough” teams in a month than most local public schools will play in year (that’s both boys and girls). There are clear reasons why so many of the top players for boys and girls are leaving the public schools and opting for the private school programs. Far better competition in the classroom and on the court.

  10. I have been to eight or ten private school games this year and seen about 20 teams play. The only competitive game was Smith vs. Wesleyan, all the others were blow outs against terrible teams. Some of the teams were public schools but most were private. The statement that privates will play more competitive games in a month than most public schools is ridiculous. It is also untrue that public schools have been told not to play private schools. If that was true why did Smith play Wesleyan. Public schools don’t want to play private schools because privates have fifth year players who make a huge difference in the outcome. Please don’t answer back and say they are the same age etc. Even if they are the extra year of basketball is a difference maker. Let the public school bring back the graduated seniors that were good and see how much better they are. There is a huge MYTH perpetuating itself that private schools are better but all you have to do is look at the scores in the paper and you will see blow out after blow out. I am sure their fans will answer that it is because their team is so good but in reality it is because the competition is so bad. Yes, every two weeks or so they play someone good like Christ school but in between it is boredom. I drove from out of town to see the games at GDS yesterday and I left after the first quarter of the GDS game. The day was a waste of time and money. Kids are going to private schools so they can re-class. In many cases the smaller classes make for a better education too. They may be going because they think there is better basketball competition but I would be willing to bet most of them have discovered that is not the case. There are a lot of people out there drinking the private school Kool Aide. There is good basketball in both public and private. I get tired of the private school people bashing public schools.

  11. There isnt a private/public war going on. Families are making the decisions to move and that is their perogative. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. If a family wants their kid held back then that is their decision. You cant find many negative as far as the kid is concerned.

  12. Myth…. I would like to have your job because it sounds like you have a lot of free time on your hands to do fun leisurely activities such as going to high school basketball games.

    Fact:
When you play in events such as the Marvin Webster you do not get to pick your opponent

  13. Smith runs the Marvin Webster. Do you really think they didn’t have a say in who they play?
GDS ran the event at GDS. Do you really think they didn’t have a say in who they play?
Smith chose a tough opponent, GDS chose a weak one. Two different philosophies at work there.

  14. I agree with myth. The reason private schools are more popular has to do with the parents. They believe little Johnny and Jane has a better chance at getting a scholarship if they reclass and go to one of these schools. When it doesn’t work out, they transfer again. When they get their college dream and don’t get playing time, they transfer again. The private school basketball system is nothing more than winter AAU. There are plenty of good players in the public schools, but they don’t get to cherry pick their players like the private schools. As far as playing the private schools, the public schools should play the private schools. It is fun to play against the best competition. Again, the parents are the only ones who are against it.

  15. I promise you that there are a couple of public schools schedules that tougher than GDS’s. I know Dudley and Kinstons are. I bet those two programs don’t schedule an East Davidson for a Non-Conference game. Matter of fact Dudley has Christ school scheduled for this Friday and Oak Hill scheduled in January. They also have some top notch competion in the Christmas Tournament that they play in down in Spartanburg,SC instead of playing in that watered down Little 4. I am not on here to take shots at GDS, but what glory or how do you prepare your kids by playing these type of teams? You have played one tough game so far and lost. Everybody else you have played could not beat the school of the blind. For the talent that is on that team, I just don’t get it. I would be traveling trying to play your elite teams to challenge my kids and put them in the best situations to be in front of college coaches. How many major D1 coaches are going to see a Christian Hairston or Reggie Dillard by playing an East Davidson or participating in the Little 4. Freddy should take a page out of Coach Price book and go out and get these kids in front of some real competion, and some real college coaches. Has GDS ever been to the Beach Ball Classic, or the City of Palms where you find your Duke,Carolinas, etc. at during the Christmas breaks? NO, so is it really best to go to these private schools if the kids are not getting what they really want? I remember sitting down watching Dudley play Word of God at Dudley and seeing so many college coaches there. They were there to see John Wall, but left talking about a young PJ Hairston and Reggie Dillard. I know because I was sitting beside John Callipari when he was talking to one of his assitants during halftime.

  16. First off, For those getting personally offended about private schools this and that…
have you ever considered that maybe kids what to go to private school so that they actually go to college (GTCC doesn’t count, sorry)
    Secondly,
I think that anytime you have to play Christ School, Wesleyan, Ravenscroft, Charlotte Christian, Upper Room Christian, High Point Christian, and United Faith Christian, all in the same season, then I’d consider that a difficult schedule. All of these schools are private, and they all (for the most part) play each other.
Also, I think it’s safe to say all of these teams are better than Smith, Dudley, etc. So saying that GDS or any other private school plays an easy schedule, is clearly false.

  17. I really wish that prior to posting statements posters would do their homework. GDS opened the season @ Christ School and Greenfield Academy. Also, when the game with Westchester was originally scheduled WCDS was a state champion. How about their battles with Forsyth Country Day and on and on.

GDS has NEVER run away from competition. They have always played a challenging schedule. And, lets go back and look at their record against Dudley while Dudley was still very very good.

Good grief. Coach Johnson is as good as it gets and always plays a difficult schedule. Go find a controversy elsewhere, there certainly is not one here

  18. Kind of a wild and crazy weekend for Muggsy Bogues and his United Faith team from Charlotte, at the Charlotte Hoops Challenge….

Nationally ranked United Faith lost a small lead in the fourth quarter before losing to Florida state power The Rock 53-50 on the first day of the Charlotte Hoops Challenge….(Friday)

    On Saturday it was:
    Evelyn Mack of Charlotte 64
    United Faith 57….

Picked up these scores by way of the Charlotte Observer…..

    United Faith(1-2)

  19. Obviously all schools, both public and private, will play difficult and easy opponents. It wouldn’t make much sense to schedule top tier opponents every game of the year. Also, unless two teams are in the same conference, they do not have to play each other- both schools have to agree. If an inferior opponent wants to play a GDS, Christ School, or other top tier team in the area, then they can.

  20. Tom

You are correct in what you said concerning parents. I also have a sneaky feeling that some parents thinks Tony is going pro or something by reclassing. I sincerely believe it is about the education.
