Women’s College Basketball – Guilford 75, Roanoke 66

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Guilford College overcame a nine-point second half deficit to rally past Roanoke College, 75-66, in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) action Tuesday night at Ragan-Brown Field House. Junior Brittany Atwater’s 13 points, six assists and two steals led a balanced scoring night for the Quakers, which saw all five starters finish with double-digit scoring.

Guilford (5-2, 3-0 ODAC) exploded early building a 14-point lead in the first 12 minutes of the half behind the three-point shooting of Jazlyn Gibbs and low post play of Morgan King. Both players had nine points at halftime and finished the game with 15 points each.

Roanoke (1-5, 1-2 ODAC) used a 21-5 surge over the final 7:30 of the first half to steal the momentum and take a 35-33 lead into halftime. The Maroons were led by Kayla Lemke who scored 11 of her game-high 17 points in the first half and Paxton Gwin who contributed 10 points in the first stanza.

The Maroons started the second half increasing their lead to 50-41 over the first six minutes before the Quakers started chipping away at the lead. Freshman Amber Weaver hit a pair of free throws at 8:23 to tie the score at 54-54. Gabby Oglesby’s layup at 4:40 broke the tie and gave Guilford the lead for good.

Freshman Logan Hardin tied for a game-high grabbing seven rebounds to go along with her five points, while teammate Jaclyn Nucci finished the game with 10 points and five assists. The Quakers Shot 49.2 percent from the field and 71.4 percent from the free throw line including Atwater’s 5-6 down the stretch to ice the game.

Roanoke had strong performances from Lemke, Gwin and Laurel Hankins who finished the game with 17, 16 and 14 points respectively. Tatum Mckee pulled down seven rebounds to tie for game-high honors. The Maroons finished the game shooting 51 percent from the field and 83.3 percent from the free throw line.

Guilford returns to action Saturday (12/10) on the road taking on non-conference Meredith College at 2:00 p.m.
