College Men’s Basketball Final – Guilford 96, Washington and Lee 67

LEXINGTON, Va. – Gabriel Lowder (Yadkinville, N.C./North Forsyth) paced six Quakers in double-figure scoring with 19 points in Guilford College’s 96-67 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) basketball win at Washington and Lee University Wednesday night.

The visiting Quakers (6-2, 1-1 ODAC) rebounded from consecutive losses last week with its finest game of the year and made a season-high 60 percent of its shots. Lowder and company found the Warner Center to their liking as they made nine-of-20 from three-point range, including five first-half trifectas.

Junior Travis Tracy (Spartanburg, S.C./Spartanburg Day School) drilled three three-pointers off the bench and scored all 11 of his points in the first half, which helped Guilford open a 48-28 halftime edge. The Quakers made over 55 percent of their first-half shots and turned the ball over just once, compared to the Generals’ (5-4, 1-2 ODAC) eight first-half miscues.

Guilford’s torrid shooting continued into the second half as the Quakers shot better than 65 percent from the floor. Lowder and rookie Matt McCarthy (Rockville, Md./Good Counsel) both made two more from long distance, which gave them three three-pointer apiece. McCarthy finished with 13 points in 23 points off the bench, both career highs. Fellow freshman reserve Will Freeman (Fort Wayne, Ind./Richmond Senior (N.C.)) sank six-of-seven shots from the floor and finished with 12 points in just six minutes. Carson Sullivan (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Christian (Pennsylvania)) and James Robbins (Thomasville, N.C./Wesleyan (Davidson County C.C.)) both added 10 points apiece. Sullivan also contributed five rebounds and five assists, both team highs.

Javon McDonald made four three-pointers and scored a game-best 20 points for Washington and Lee. Drew Kimberly chipped in 12 points and a game-high six rebounds off the bench.

Guilford entertains defending ODAC champion Randolph-Macon College Saturday (12/10) at 3:00 p.m. in the Ragan-Brown Field House.
