  1. WCA is a hard team to follow on MaxPreps….The overall wins shows more games that MaxPreps is showing, but I think we have their wins caught up this week….The #4 loss would have come from last Friday’s defeat at the hands of Ravenscroft, but we will go with that as loss #3….Not a problem, we can adjust and I’m looking foward to the WCA-GDS games and the WCA-HPCA games…..They should be good ones and you would think that they would be coming up pretty soon…..

  2. public school ‘boys’ basketball Is HORRIBLE in ‘Guilty County’. The top 10 looks more a wall of shame with an avg. Of 5 losses per team!! What a joke!!

  3. Of course public school basketball is horrible Hoop Scout. What do expect when several talented players flock to the private sector. It is what it is. Oh, maybe if they would put teams like the Greensboro Home School on their schedule the wins would be better or schoold like Durham Math/Science? Come on Hoop Scout, you talk like the private schools are playing a national schedule or something. You are too funny!

  4. Their loss to Ravenscroft was third loss. Losses this year are Ravenscroft twice and Northside Christian. Not sure where the fourth loss is coming from? They host GDS next friday the 13th of January. They also play @HPCA on the 27th. I don’t like Maxpreps because it is typically wrong. Why not just go by their team page? http://www.wesed.org/page.cfm?p=83

  5. To Yeah: You are correct that the private schools will play a few games that are easy wins but the majority of the schedule for both boys and girls has more diffucult games against highly ranked teams than any public school schedule within Guilford Co. The public schools do not play the same competition level game in and game out. Every other game if not back to back games that a school like GDS plays will have 1-3 D1 or D2 recruits or more on the roster. There are very few games on a nightly basis within Guilford Co that will have games for either boys or girls that will match up players on both teams that are going to play basketball in college. You will find that on a nightly basis at a school like GDS. This is part of the reason why so many kids are leaving for the private school setting. Why keep playing only the same players that you have played in AAU since you were 9 or 10 years old ? Few Guilford Co county teams play any teams from out of state, Raleigh, Fayetteville, Asheville or Charlotte until the playoffs. The private schools play half of their schedule against teams from outside of the immediate area. The private schools may not be playing a national schedule but it is light years better than 95% of the local public schools (the only exceptions would be a school like Dudley). Plus, the average public school will only play about 20 games and 1 tournament per season versus teams at GDS will play 32-35 games and 3-4 tournaments per season. When many of the local public schools play GDS it is one of their biggest games of the year but games with that level of play and intensity are the norm for GDS in the heart of their schedule. Don’t knock what is happening at the private schools when you don’t know what you are talking about or even pay attention to the actual schedule and results.

  6. Public school basketball is not as bad as people think and private school basketball is not as good as people think. GDS barely beat Northeast and Page in the PHI. This blog is filled with people rationalizing whatever decision they have made for their child. If you are a good player, you will be recruited wherever you play high school basketball. Kids are flocking to private schools because their parents believe this will benefit them in the scholarship search.

  7. Northeast and Page are amongst the best public school teams in this area. Both of these teams will go deep into the state playoffs. In fact, I have no doubt that both teams will win their conference by at least 2 games this year be seeded as a #1 or #2 seed in the state playoffs. The fact that both stayed with GDS is not a surprise but the fact remains that GDS still won both games and more than often will win such games because they are battle tested and well coached. Nobody is saying that there are not any good local public teams however I will run out of teams before I run out of fingers on 1 hand.

  8. No. They are going to private schools to improve their academics. There is too many distractions in public schools. Also, like public schools, private schools have different levels of competition.

  9. If you are going to leave and go from public to private, why not leave early and if it doesn’t work out then you can still return to your old public school and finish there….Don’t over-extend yourself and re-class uless you are certain and then if you decide to go back from private to public you can still make the move…Maybe it does’t work for everyone and at the public school level the kids need to form some bonds and play together in the summer and maybe the public school assistant coach can run the program or travel team….Don’t think the public school head coach can run the travel teams with the rules set up by Mo Green and staff in recent years…..A lot can be gained at both levels, public and private and the scholarships are a factor, but I keep hearing that they come more from being seen in summer than in the school-year play……Wonder if that is the same for both the girls and boys, where the summer play is where you really get seen??? Seems like these days if you are not playing basketball in the summer or almost year-round for that matter, then you are off-schedule and it goes that way for both boys and girls from what we see and hear……..There is a fine line out there and the off-season plan is very important…..Can you get it done with just regular season play alone? I don’t think so…….Got to have some young aggressive assistant coaches that can run those summer teams……Hard to compete with a Chris Paul squad or the likes….Names like that get kid’s attention in a hurry….Lots of good teams to choose from and where do you go and what do you do??? Sure can’t sit by idle and watch….The Chuck Norris and Christie Brinkley plan is not enough….

It is tough enough to spell scholarship…We shoud get free tuition to GTCC for just doing that and does GTCC recruit our local kids???? Haven’t heard much from them lately……

  10. @ Better Schedule, I know plenty about basketball…I forgot more than you will know. There are 3 legit private schools in the County. I understand that many kids leave b/c they would like to play some schools in Charlotte and Raleigh. Kids aren’t leaving b/c they are playing the same kids since they were 9 or 10. As a matter of fact, if you are playing quality teams, they will compete against kids that have played AAU ball since they were 9 or 10. That’s right! If you look at HPCA vs Christ school for example, 4 to 5 HPCA kids played AAU ball against 3 of Christ school players since they were 10. Better Schedule you haven’t been around long enough…GDS kids for another example has 8 kids that have played AAU ball against several kids from Ravenscroft, WCA, HPCA and Charlotte schools since they were 9 or 10. I am not knocking the private school experience b/c I understand there are many advantages such as practicing on Sundays, year round etc…Public schools don’t have the flexibility to do those things. Public schools have advantages as well (can’t name them at the moment, but I am sure there are some). Out!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  11. I can think of one advantage: Public school is FREE… other than that, I don’t have any.

  12. If you really want the truth is there is not any real talent left in the previous year you at least had 1 or 2 on every Guilford county school basketball team . In Guilford county only one I know that is standout is Paris Kea. Page will win because there is no really good talent on the other teams.

  13. Why doesnt Thomasville Prep boys get any respect on your polls. They have lost some games but to really good teams with d 1 players such as oak hill, upper room , wesleyan, and quality education. They have also beaten several local teams such as new garden friends whom you have ranked and high point central and andrews. People may want to take notice of them !

  14. @Tprep now that’s too funny. But u right. To be honest no matter what the rankings are for public or private I just hope all the kids go to college.

  15. I have watched alot of basketball this season and would say Tprep is a hard to team to watch is a understatement. They are a new team to the area but definitely have some good talent on the squad. Time will give the kids the chemistry they need especially if they play together during the summer then the boys will be like the girls team. I have seen some teams for boys in the private and public sector that are hard to watch but Tprep by far is not on the list. They have D-1 prospects on that team and plus they play a good schedule, what more do you need.

  16. Within 12-24 months New Garden Friends School will be established at, or near the top, both academically and athletically. They have a lot of good people working behind the scenes on behalf of young people. They, also, have more interest from prospective students than you can imagine. But, to be an athlete at NGFS a youngster will have to take his/her academics seriously as they do at GDS.

Right now they have three very good ball players and will build off of this. There is no question they are on the way.

  17. Hoops 123, don’t count your chickens before your eggs hatch. There have been a ton of private schools pop up that have failed and I believe NGFS will be one of the next. When I speak of failing I am only talking about athletically. There aren’t enough talented kids in this area for all the private and public schools we already have. One of the good players you are talking about couldn’t get into GDS, didn’t stay at Veritas, was a disruption for some decent NW teams. So next season you will have 2 players and then whoever else comes in, I just honestly don’t see many good kids saying I want to go to NGFS. Most people in the area are like who is that.

  18. Coach, you may be right, but I saw them play Friday against a big Caldwell team, without their big man Adam Coble. They aren’t big (especially without him), but they can sure shoot. And their is no ‘quit’ in that team, I can tell you that. With a brand new gym getting ready to open, and what appeared to me to be an incredibly vocal and supportive fan base, I wouldn’t bet against them.
