  1. Congratulations to GDS. It was an amazing atmosphere at the game.

Wesleyan did a fantastic job with the crowd and I don’t remember that many high school games that were so exciting.

Wesleyan’s big 3 are very talented. GDS had a great team effort.

I feel like the key to the game was GDS rebounding and swarming defense in the 2nd half.

  2. Can anybody give us some of the scoring totals…..Who led GDS in scoring, how did the Big Three do for WES?????

Very curious to know? Did Ross lead GDS? Was it Lucas???? Maybe Hairston or possibly Terry or Dillard?

Inquiring minds would like to know and what would you say was the difference in the game and how do you see the GDS-HPCA matchup shaping up? We don’t need to start predicting scores this far out, but how do you see the game for Tuesday January 24 shaping up??? Is HPCA chasing GDS or the other way around?????

How about those points tonight for GDS and WES.? Frank Eaves had 34 for Page tonight and Sam Hunt had 42 for Dudley last Friday night….Fine efforts by all these kids and we are just trying to get them all some props…….

Already looking forward to that HPCA at GDS game on Tuesday January 24 and looking forward to seeing if PAGE can run back through the Metro and not lose a conference game…..Pirates(6-0) first time through…..

  3. Actually the key to the game was that WCA missed too many free throws and GDS made thier free throws at the end. Also, in the fourth, WCA’s so called “big 3” tried to play too much one on one and not enough team ball.

  4. The stat line tonight was gds 65 Wesleyan 58. Basketball is a team sport.
The next big games are on Monday. Do you know the schedule?

  5. GDS started off tight and really wanted it, but they loosened up as the game wore on. I agree WES miss some crucial free throws but GDS miss some as well seemed as though they went 50/50 make one miss one. Montrell Ghoston was poised to have a good night when an ankle injury took him out for the remainder of the game. This also opened things up more for WES primary players, Ghoston was GDS best player in the first half and Reggie Dillard was their best player in the 2nd half. They got solid contributions from Julian, JT, Harrison an Quayshad but Dillard asserted his game as well as his leadership. This was one of his best games as a leader and he hit crucial shots at crucial times. GDS didnt play there best ball by far and Im sure WES didnt either but the intensity and effort was there for both. WES did go one on one a lot but that is there spread and ISO’s that Gat likes to run. GDS just gave good help on defense and the iso dont leave pen and kick options like dribble drive so if kinda closed them down once the defense collapsed. Great effort from from Montay, Quell and Theo who was ready to hit some 3;s but didnt have the opps. It is so awesome to have a game like that and the teams are in same county instead of different state…I hope they dont go haterade on this we got some good teams and games coming up and have a great chance to establish the tobbacco road hot bed of prep basketball here!!! FUN GAME AND NIGHT

  6. WCA has several better 1 on1 players but GDS won because of its depth and teamwork. Reggie “The Real Deal” Dillard had the best individual effort tonight for GDS. WCA did not have an answer for Reggie and his power. All 9 or 10 of the players that GDS played tonight played well when needed. GDS missed a lot of shots and free throws in the 1st half but hit those stay shots in the 2nd half. The GDS defense was the difference tonight. This was a great game. This is the best & most D1 talent that I have seen on the floor at one time in this area since Dudley vs Word of God a couple of years ago with PJ, Reggie, John Wall, CJ Leslie and others. The private school teams are really loaded when it comes to basketball in this area.

  7. Well I can’t resist. What an atmosphere at WCA. The students there were awesome supporting their team. As good an atmosphere as I have seen. Looked to me like GDS uncharacteristically got caught up in it early and didn’t play their game. That being said Wesleyan jumped on them pretty good forcing turnovers and converting in transition. Somehow GDS was able to keep it close. Looked like GDS came out in second half and rebounded much better and played more team basketball than the first half. Dillard and Quayshad were really good tonight. Maybe this is Reggie’s breakout game. Not to mention that Gholston got hurt early in 2nd half. GDS depth was definitely tested. And it won out yet again. And all I could think of as I was leaving is how well coached that team is. If it was ever obvious, it was tonight. And I don’t mean necessarily with strategy during the game, but just the way the game is played. They play it the same every night. If you haven’t seen this team play you need to make a point to come out and watch them. Congrats to both teams and schools for the most entertaining night I have had in a long time.

  8. Greensboro Day plays at New Garden Friends School tomorrow and I say the fans who weren’t at the games like to know who scored the points….If you can’t be there you want to know who did what…..There’s much more to the games than just the final score……We like to know how the games went and not just the final outcome….People who talk about the games don’t just sit around talking about the final score…..Final score is good enough for the coaches, but true fans and followers of the game want to know more…..

  9. Very good reports and thanks….I hope the game with WES and GDS over at GDS is just as good and I’m looking forward to it already….I like hearing about the big games and loved it back when we saw GDS playing against Ryan Kelly, Seth Curry, Miles and Mason Plumlee, Khalil Mitchell at UVA and others that we now see on TV and hear on the radio…..The names and numbers are important…..

  10. Thanks for the info folks and we’ll see you back here in the morning and at the GDS-NGFS game tomorrow afternoon…..If you get a chance leave us some more scores and info and we will post it up here in the morning to go along with the rest of the news…..

  11. “It just shows we are a young team,” Wesleyan coach Keith Gatlin said. “Our kids showed they were young and tried to do it themselves instead of trusting each other.”
Quote from Keith Gatlin in today’s News & Record.
Montay Brandon – FSU signee is a senior (starting guard)
Josh Woodward – is a senior (starting center)
I think I would rather have a sophomore Theo Pinson whose top 10 in the country. How many big time games has he played? He has played for Team USA, played big time games last year at ORMA, and big time AAU games. I would take his experience over a lot of players.

    Brandon 14pts
    Pinson 14pts
    ***to lead Wesleyan

It sounds like last night’s game had a great atmosphere and I wish their were more tickets available so I could have gotten one.

  12. AAU is a showcase sport for individuals this is where it counts, as a team….. GDS is a true team. Until WCS can play as a team they will end up with many “L”s. Too much cockiness on the floor last night for WCS. Too much solid depth in GDS for WCS to overcome. Any night can be a big game for Hairston, Lucas, Dillard, Terry Goldstn, Williams, Ross, and I could go on and on. No team can shut down all of them A great team to watch if you haven’t already seen them, do so it is worth it.

  13. Those that were at the game and have seen HPCA, do you think either one of them can handle the speed, size, and depth of HPCA? Want honest basketball assessments, not trashtalk. Speed is what makes HPCA so good, and they have lots of it.

  14. I think the game with HPCA is going to be a blur. One of the big keys will be how badly Montrel Gholdston is hurt. If he can’t play then that will really hurt GDS. He was so disruptive on the defensive end last night while he was in the game. GDS needs him to guard the ball and give Ross a rest. If he is healthy then depth is a wash. GDS will play 8-9 guys with no dropoff. I think the game will be determined with how Williams plays and can he score around basket like he did last night. And can he keep the big kid going to App off the glass. That kid plays hard. GDS and HPCA have a weeks worth of games before they play, but it should be a great basketball game. I think it’s a toss up. Both teams are good. I have only seen HPCA twice. I have seen GDS a number of times.

  15. I do agree that GDS plays as a team because Coach Freddy demands it and Wesleyan did not trust their teammates. Players have left GDS because of his unselfish brand of basketball. Pinson could have had more touches coming off of screens and not sure why they went away from Chapman in second half. He had his man sealed off a few times but players kept over looking that and tried to win the game by themselves. Until Coach Gatlin start sitting players for being selfish they will finish season with double digit loses.

  16. I am a Wesleyan fan and I have seen both GDS and HPCA play multiple times. From what I have seen, GDS is better team, but we shall see on the 24th.

    Back to last nights game:
    @publicschool

Naming the seniors seems to me like yu are trying to say they are not young. They do start two seniors, but they only have three on the team. The other three starters are all Sophomores and one of the only players that comes off the bench (including last night) is in the eighth grade. So yes, I wold say they are very young.

The difference in the game is exactly what I said it would be, depth. Wesleyan only played 8 people and 2 of the three 3 off the bench played very limited minutes. GDS could sub in without losing much, but Wesleyan takes out a starter to and puts in an eighth grader, you are bound to lose something. When the scoring was still back and forth and it was tied for a lot through the forth, all of Wesleyan key players were just dead. You could see it in their breathing, you could see it in the way they were resting on their legs, and you could see it in their play. Depth was the reason they were missing free throws and depth was the reason GDS was making free throws. Quayshad Williams only got about three minutes in the first half because of fouls, and he didn’t play more than half of the second half, so when he got in the game late he was fresh and made 4 big free throws.

Neither team had their best night but the atmosphere was incredible and honestly, I have no idea who is going to win states this year. Christ School, HPCA, GDS, Ravenscroft, and I think, even in the loss, Wesleyan showed they were better than most GDS and HPCA people gave them credit for.

  17. Reggie Dillard with 17 points to lead a very balanced GDS attack…..Reggie played in front of lot of big crowds while at Dudley and that might have been a help to him in the large atmosphere last night….Fine job turned in by both teams and we are now ready to turn our energies on to the next round….GDS at NGFS today at 5pm….

  18. 2 seniors in the top 7 and 3 in the top 8, where the 3rd senior was in the game for 3 minutes total. So yeah that is young, you can’t forget that Wesleyan is not deep and that 8th man in a big game is lucky to see the floor at all. Not only are 4 of the 7 players that saw big minutes underclassman, one is still in middle school for goodness sakes. That is young.

  19. Could anyone tell me how I could listen to the gso sports interviews after the page game last night?

  20. Last nights game was a perfect example of why so many kids are showing up at the private schools for sports. The GDS head master will address the crowd several times per year concerning GDS related topics such as when he acknowledged Freddy on his total wins earlier this week. The WCA head master not only acknowledged his head coach last night but he took the time to acknowledge his competitions coach (Freddy) on his achievements. He went on to say he enjoys the rivalry and friendship that he shares with the GDS head master and the school in general. He ended with a prayer as they do before all games along with the national anthem. The culture that you can see and feel at schools like GDS, WCA, or just about any other private school setting that I have been to over the past number of years makes it a worth while experience for kids that is invaluable. Yes – the expense can be an issue for some but many do receive enough grant funds to offset the financial concerns. The experience last night along with the everyday benefits received at schools like WCA and GDS is worth it for any parent reading this. Whether it is on the court/field, classroom or the extras in between, the private schools in our area are giving something to our kids that goes way beyond competition and win/loss records. Last night was a great win for GDS but an even better night for highlighting a lot of the good that is being produced on these campuses. Go Bengals and Trojans !

  21. Sure looks like a lot of scouts were at the game between GDS and Wesleyan. A game loaded with talent and Highpoint University and Charleston Southern were the only ones in attendance according to the News-Records.

  22. On the interviews from last night’s Page-SEG game, we will have to get the tapes to Coach Kent and then he will share, we hope/think….
