College Basketball News – Guilford’s Josh Pittman Named ODAC Player of the Week

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Junior Josh Pittman (Archdale, N.C./Trinity) earned the Old Dominion Athletic Conference’s (ODAC) Men’s Basketball Player of the Week Award Monday, his first of the season and second of his career. He also collected his third Guilford College Student-Athlete of the Week Award of the year. The Guilford prize is presented weekly by the school’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).

Pittman, a 6-1, 160-pound guard, averaged 21.5 points, 4.5 rebounds and 4.0 assists per game in the Quakers’ two ODAC wins last week. He shot nearly 53 percent from three-point range and made 10 of 11 free throws in the games. Pittman drained seven three-pointers and scored a game-high 26 points in Guilford’s Jan. 11 victory at Bridgewater College. He also had five rebounds and two assists in a 24-minute performance that helped the Quakers score a season-high 97 points. Pittman chipped in 17 points and distributed a game-best six assists in Guilford’s 79-73 league win over visiting Eastern Mennonite University Jan. 14. His four free throws in the final minute preserved Guilford’s third win in four games.

Pittman has scored at least 11 points in each of the Quakers’ last eight games and moved atop the team’s scoring charts with 14.1 points per game. He stands ninth among ODAC scoring leaders and third in minutes played (30.4). Pittman ranks sixth in the league in free-throw percentage (.769) and three-pointers per game (2.2) and ninth in steals per game (2.0). His team-leading 2.8 assists per game are 10th-best in the ODAC. Pittman ranks fourth among Guilford’s career leaders in three-pointers (155) and three-point attempts (409) and is 78 points shy of 1,000 for his career.

Coach Tom Palombo’s team (11-5, 5-2 ODAC) entertains league-rival Emory & Henry College Wednesday (1/18) at 7:00 p.m. before visiting league-leading Virginia Wesleyan College Saturday (1/21) at 2:00 p.m. The Marlins were ranked second in the Jan. 10 D3hoops.com Top 25 Poll.

The Student-Athlete of the Week Award is presented by Guilford’s SAAC, which is comprised of representatives from each of the school’s 20 varsity teams. The group meets regularly to discuss the state of Guilford Athletics and seeks to build community among Guilford’s student-athletes and non-student-athletes. Recent Guilford SAAC activities include a cancer awareness promotions, canned-food drives, volunteer assistance with the North Carolina Special Olympics and tutoring at New Garden Friends School.
