HIGH POINT – The NASCAR world lost one its strongest advocates and a well known entity in the racing community. Former longtime High Point Enterprise sports editor Benny Phillips died Tuesday morning after a brief hospitialization.

Phillips, a graduate of High Point College, worked for the Enterprise for 48 years with 32 of those as sports editor before his retirement in January 2008. In 2010, he was inducted into the Guilford County Sports Hall of Fame. According to News and Record Sports Writer Ed Hardin, Phillips was truly one of a kind.

“Benny was a unique person and a giant in his field,” Hardin said. “It is hard to think about what sports would be like if Benny Phillips had not come along. He certainly had an impact on a lot of things. He wasn’t just a figure in High Point, he was a figure throughout the area and had a bigger impact in racing than people know. The drivers were not just subjects to him, they were friends and part of his life. He went hunting with Dale Earnhardt and was close friends with Richard Petty and Terry Labonte. They would call him about things they needed or wanted to do.”
