Big time switch today for James Summers, the top-notch QB from Page High School and he told WFMY NEWS 2, in this key interview, that he will drop the Red and switch to the Blue and by the time he is through, he may get a chance to play some QB at UNC his first year in school, at least that is what new Tar Heel head football coach Larry Fedora is telling him….

James Summers is right here, right now and he tells WFMY NEWS 2 Sports’ Brian Formica what caused the change and why he will be headed to Chapel Hill, instead of Raleigh, in the fall of 2012….

  1. I hate to lose an IN STATE RECRUIT to UNC Cheat.
This is not going to ruin the Pack’s recruiting clas much.
He would have had an opportunity to play QB but it would have been a longshot.
The transfer from Colorado State, Tyler Brocious, Manny Stocker and Brien Taylor are all QB’s that had as good or better numbers in high school than Summers. He is a fine athlete and that is what State recruited him as. Of course maybe Coach Fedora knows that a 2 year bowl ban is on the horizon and Bryn Renner could transfer without the sit out requirement to another FBS school. In that case going after another QB was wise.

  2. I am happy to hear that Mr Summers is going to UNC instead of State. I hate the State coach and I wish this was his last year but unfortunately they won 1 game too many. This will be a good decision by Mr Summers because UNC will take about a year to recruit and build the program back up. Plus, I think AD Yow will fire (or not renew) the State football coaches contract either next year or the year afterwards. Instead of playing for 2 different coaches at State, now you will only have to play for 1 coach at UNC regardless. Welcome Mr Summers to the true “state” school – Carolina !

  3. You hate the State coach? You think AD Yow will fire him?
You may hate him because he beats your team but why would an AD fire a coach that has done the following?:
    1. Win 17 games the past 2 years.
    2.Win back-to-back bowl games.
    3.Defeat UNC 5 straight seasons.
4.Oh yeah and his football program IS NOT FACING ANY LOOMING NCAA SANCTIONS LIKE BOWL BANS, LOSS OF SCHOLARSHIPS,etc and PROBATION.

By the way does your Mommy know you get online and type about things you know very little about?
You had better get back to your homework so you can pass the 7th grade this year.

  4. crackride board monkey, does your wife know that you are on the computer instead of folding the clothes like you were supposed to two weeks ago??? Now, go on and be a good little boy and run off and finish your chores…

Point is James is gonna do what James feels is best for him and him only…Good luck James because there are more people supporting you than there are who want to bring you down…They can all go back to their arm chairs…lol…Have fun James and continue to work hard…

  5. What a dey for the Wolfpack fans. James switches to Carolina and somebody switched the rims in the Dean Dome or something like that…..Time for Page at Grimsley on Friday as we switch gears to the next big game/thing……

  6. Lets start with the facts. He hasn`t won a game on the road within his own division since his tenure has begun in raleigh.

His record is 33-30( with a very weak schedule) overall and has had 3 losing season out of 5. If Yow is settling for mediocrity she has found her man.

A 7 or 8 win season is TOB ceiling annd his dna proves that. The consensus opinion among the high school coaching fraternity
is he is arrogant and will throw other schools under the bus instead of selling his own employeed institute.

Go back to crackride so you can share the same opinion(s). Delusion at its finest. Run monkey boy run.

Mom just came in I`ve got to go.

  7. To Great Decision:

I don’t have a dog in the fight — and both football programs are dogs from a dog of a football conference, as evidenced by the ACC’s pathetic record in BCS games (how about that West Virginia 70, ACC chump 33 score?) — but I would’ve thought you’d learned your lesson about making the ‘true ‘state’ school’ reference. How’s that “flagship university” thing working out on the football field for you and Everett Withers?

  8. NC State has a hard time keeping/attracting quality QBs. Russell Wilson and now this kid. That’s a telling sign.

  9. Losing Summers is difficult for Pack fans. he is a very good athlete. Who knows where he would have played at NCSU but he would have had a shot at QB. Wherever he played he would have contributed. Fine athlete.

UNC may be a better fit. They have virtually no QB’s on staff and other than Renner, what they have is weak. And while unc will get some probabtion and a bowl ban, Summers will either be redshirted or be in prep school during part of that time so it doesn’t impact him.

The other important factor is unc has a better shot at keeping him eligible. unc fans can laugh and complain all you want but those Swahili majors and African American Studies majors or a Sports degree where 93% of the graduating class in 2008 earned A’s, none of that goes away with probation. unc has more degrees that offer him an better chance to stay eligible. If they can keep LT, Peppers, Dante Paige Moss, Dwight Jones, and Marvin Austin eligible then they can keep Summers eligible. It’s a good choice for him. Can’t blame him. Less competition for playing time and a much easier road to stay eligible.

Now the question becomes, Hargrave or JUCO?

  10. I’ve read numerous articles, blogs and comments about James and his decision to switch. Most of the comments key in on how the switch may affect the schools. However, with few exceptions such as comments from “good choice” they’re not many that tell how the switch will affect James. This young man wants to go where he can immediately make an impact thus, boosting his chance of positive exposure. Also, when State started “murmuring sweet nothings in his ear” he was just shy of 16! SIXTEEN, people! This man (believe it or not) was one of the youngest members on my Pirate Championship team. Can you imagine a 16 year old being pulled in so many directions? People calling…… HOUNDING??? (Some of you’d be surprised at some of the tactics ADULTS perform to get a kid into a school). I pulled him to the side awhile back and told him, “You are going to have to make decisions that YOU FEEL are in YOUR best interest. Once you make them, stand by them!” James (right now) is following his heart. It may not be the decision that others might’ve wanted but it’s HIS decision and we need to respect that!

  11. My question to “good choice”; is Summers not going to qualify to go to UNC. Is he going to have to attend a prep school first???

  12. … and he will get no bowl appearance…sanctions looming…don’t sign too quickly. Don’t believe the lies.

State recieved a new committment from a tranfer QB (former 4 star). His chances of competing for QB were getting slimmer at State. I like Summers and he is a great athlete but his future is probably not at QB. If he chooses that path, I hope he proves me wrong.

  13. Of course now the Wolpfack fans come out and say they didn’t need him or really want him. Good luck with that… As for not having any QB’s besides Renner, they have Marquis Williams backing him up and two spread QBs in this recruiting class, including Summers. Keep telling yourself Wolpfack that there will be a bowl ban, I can’t wait to see you guys jumping off cliffs when the decision is finally handed down.

  14. As of Monday it will be 94 days since UNC met in Indy with the NCAA COI.
Boise State took one more day for their decision and that was for multiple sports.
Southern California’s took 110 days and they had 2 sports involved we all know what they got from the NCAA.
The longer this goes without a decision then worse it will be for UNC.
UNC is a FOOTBALL ONLY situation and it is already the longest running of its type ever.
If I were a fan of that program then I would be VERY CONCERNED.
You UNC fans can feel free to bash me or any other fanbase than yours all you’d like but facts are facts.
This NCAA Investigation is the REAL DEAL.

  15. Being a farmer sure comes with a lot of perks wouldn`t you say. I guess no fields need plowed and it Iis to cold to go fishing so you have nothing but
time on your hands. Your schools fanbase are obsessed with unc and in soceity your always jealous of the rich, so we can catch your agenda.

Your school is the only school in the acc that has been convicted of “lack of institution control” that I can think of and that folks is a BIG DEAL.

For 18 months thats been your whole agenda LOIC / SMU / USC you better damn well hope that your stupid prophecy comes to fruition monkey boy.

Where is Brakk or waffleton when you need them. Good luck with your wishful thinking because you sure have yourself convinced.

  16. NCSU would love to have james. No matter where he plays he will contribute. He’s a great athlete and congrats to him. Not sure where some unc fans say State did not want him. State would love to have him.

There is much more competition at NCSU at the QB position than there is at unc. unc only has Renner and M. Williams, and the new kid Coker, who Summers can run circles around. State has Glennon, next year, then Brosius and Thomas competing, then Manny Stocker who enrolled early in January. And that doesn’t count Taylor who will probably switch positions. The cabinet is bare at unc and full in Raleigh at the QB position.

To teamunc, Summers has to qualify whether he chose unc or NCSU. NCSU knew he was a long shot to get in and unc knows the same thing. If he fails to qualify he has options in JUCO or prep school. Regardless of where he attends I hope he qualifies and takes advantage of his athletic talent to get a degree. One day sports will end.

The probation looming at unc should not impact him much, even with 9 major violations, which is more than any school in the history of the conference. james will most likely be redshirted his first year or be in prep school. James will have less competition at unc, the new coach runs an offense that fits him and they have several majors to choose from that should help keep him eligible. When it comes to tuoring assistance it’s hard to be the new Baddour Center for Leadership and Learning.

Congrats to James on whatever he decides. The easy part is over. Now go get qualified and get a degree. I would think most of the community is pulling for you.

For farmers, you may want to get your story straight. the NCAA did not find NCSU for Lack of Institutional Control. You may want to read the report. Bill Friday and Spangler did, but they were with the unc system.
