Greensboro College Women Defeats Mary Baldwin on the Road, 63-47

The women’s basketball team extended their win streak to five games with a 63-47 victory over the Fighting Squirrels of Mary Baldwin. Greensboro is now 9-2 in conference play and completed the regular season sweep of Mary Baldwin, having defeated them 74-46 at Hanes Gymnasium earlier this season.

Greensboro won convincingly on the road, despite pre-season All-American Danielle Duncan not playing. Several players picked up the slack in her absence with both Chevena Pickardand Jena Cabe recording double-doubles in points and rebounds.

Mary Baldwin stuck with The Pride early, holding an 8-6 lead at the 14:34 mark in the first half. Pickard hit a jump shot 27 seconds later to tie the game and spark a quick run for Greensboro. Four players scored on the 12-0 run before the Squirrels finally cut into a 10 point lead with two free throws. They continued to chip away at the lead for the rest of the period, but Greensboro took a 31-14 lead into the break.

The Pride gave no chance for Mary Baldwin to get back in the game as they continued to extend their lead in the second half. Following the strong start to the second half, Coach Randy Tuggle went to his bench, allowing his young players to gain some experience. Thirteen players received playing time with nine scoring.

Pickard led Greensboro with 16 points, in addition to ten rebounds and four steals. Cabe’s double-double included ten points and ten rebounds with six steals. Bianca Richburg also cracked double digits scoring with twelve and Andrienne Terrell had a game high five assists. As a team, Greensboro forced 38 turnovers, including 17 steals.

The ladies will return to Hanes Gymnasium on Tuesday for a re-match with the Pacers of Peace. They won their first match 71-56. Following their Tuesday match, Greensboro will hit the road for three games.
