  1. First of all, congrats to Reader…..Clemson is a heckuva program in both sports! However………..

I can’t wait to see Jack Leggett’s face when he sees a 330 lb kid in the batters box….hahaha! 330 lb kids play football not baseball. Sweeney will want him at 330, but Leggett would probably say 275 as a baseball athlete. A far stretch unless the kid can magically lose and gain 55 lbs in between football and baseball.

  2. Both coaches have spent a lot of time with Reader, there are no surprises. Both actively pursued him and that is why he chose Clemson because both coaches desperately want him. This is big-time college athletics, you don’t just show up and play….get real.

  3. You need to come watch DJ play a few games this spring and then you will be surprised…..The kid can hit and the Clomson coaches know who and what they are getting….DJ will do OK and he’s on his way and he’ll be ready to play at Clemson…..Clemson fans know who DJ Reader is and the rest of the ACC will know him soon enough…..We are lucky to have had the chance to see him play when he came through Greensboro….

  4. D.J will be just fine. One he will be playing on the D-line 300-330 with speed works on any team, Two: playing 1st base and pitching with a good bat swing. I don’t see any problem their. Good luck D.J. you will do just fine.

  5. Congratulations D.J. to a fine young man with a bright future. Really enjoyed watching you play last summer. Keep up the good work and you will go far in life. Again, congratulations.

  6. National LOIs for 2012 graduates (baseball) can be signed starting April 11, 2012. Also, any LOI must be accompanied by a scholarship offer, so it’s doubtful that Jack Leggett will be mailing any paperwork to GSO for DJ. He certainly may get a chance to be on the team at Clemson, but my guess is that like most real student athletes (He is a good student) he will find that football and academics will take up way more time than one can imagine. Now, at Carolina it’s different because of the degree that football players (who also play baseball) are granted do not require a major time commitment except on the part of the tutor.
I agree with you, Eddie. There are way too many people who get on this site who do not have a clue and who post inaccurate information.

  7. Eddie, you’re wrong. Fall is the major signing period for baseball. My son’s NLI paperwork was signed and delivered 11/9/11. Go to the baseball website of the local scools, they all published their signees in November as well. Yes you can sign later, but the fall “early period” is when baseball coaches prefer to get you locked up.

I refer you to the NLI website, http://www.ncaa.org/wps/wcm/connect/nli/nli….here you’ll see 4/11/12 is the regular period…..early period is 11/9/11 is when most D1 commitments sign.

  8. you are right, but my point was he did not sign yesterday, and I know he did not sign early because he could not have signed a national LOI for baseball and then football, Signing means you have been offered and accepted a scholarship. do you agree?

  9. I know DJ and love the kid. I don’t want to speak of him personally on this site.

So considering unnamed 2 sport stars……they would have signed yesterday…….the full scholarship football NLI…..they probably wouldn’t sign with baseball early in the fall because that’s not a full scholarship for 99% of the players. If you have a full football offer for the spring, you’re not going to sign a partial baseball NLI in the fall prior to that.

I would assume the tie to the secondary sport is less formal since the tie to the primary sport is actually full scholarship based and totally binds the kid to the school anyway.

The 2 sport star is getting no money from baseball, and he can’t go play baseball elsewhere unless he leaves football program…..just not sure on what he has to “sign” for baseball. Maybe you have to bind to both sports somehow…..maybe the deal with baseball is a handshake and promised roster spot.

  10. A football LOI takes priority as does a football scholly over baseball. He may play baseball, and I hope he does, but he will not be signing a baseball LOI. Good luck to DJ in whatever he does.

  11. The bottom line is that DJ is playing baseball at Clemson whether you guys like it or not. There may be an outside chance that he will be drafted next June, depending on his improvementlemson at all., and may not go to C.

  12. I may need to have my head examined, but I think if he had to choose DJ would drop football and play baseball and obviously it is not the case, but I think he would play baseball for free and he would love to play the game the rest of his life……Football may appear now in a position to take him further down the road, but baseball seems to have always been his passion and I feel he will pursue this sport in some shape form or fashion for many years….Let’s all meet at the first Grimsley baseball game this season and we can observe this baseball study in more detail….That would be the best move of all, get out and support DJ and the local baseball teams this spring and I’m sure many of you will…..We might need to start up the ‘Weekly Reader’ and keep a real close watch on his stats this spring…..I want to see more of the pitching part and look forward to all the games….Crazy thing about being over at Grimsley in the spring is, I remember being at a game about three years ago and Wil Myers hit three home runs in a game for Wesleyan vs. Grimsley…The game was not over after he his third HR, but after #3 the pro scouts were walking out in mass and the must have been 3-5 of them there that day, maybe more….They had seen all they needed to see on that day….Myers has been invited to attend Spring Training with the Kansas City Royals and his future looks bright….

.Lots of opportunities out there and we be looking for more kids to get that chance this season….Josh Tobias has been looking good at Florida and he will be fighting for a starting position at 3b or 2b this spring…..Plenty of talk and no need for a hot stove this winter, too warm for that….Better take full advantage of those small group workouts…….We may be off base occasionly with some of our info, but for the most part we are clear…….

  13. Thank you for the reply. I think we are basically saying the same thing, but you said it much better. As for “Pirate”, he may get drafted, but no where near high enough for it to be more than a courtesy. Think Chris Jacobs from Glenn, not Prince Fielder when making comparisons ( visit http://www.minorleaguebaseball.com).
Good luck to Mr. Reader, as he must be an exemplary young man!

  14. Pirate…the conversation wasn’t about playing or not….we were talking about two sport guys and what happens in terms of paperwork and commitments, the whole NLI process. I was very clear about that, to steer away from DJ personally to the process in general.
