NW Guilford Middle Girls Defeat Kernodle

Even after conference re-alignment, the results are the same – For the second year in a row, NW Guilford and Kernodle will share the conference championship after a NW Guilford 33-27 victory. The scoring by quarter:

   NW Guilford 12 8 4 9 - 33
   Kernodle 5 8 9 3 - 27

The NW Guilford gym was filled with loud and excited fans watching some of the best middle school basketball in the county. NW High School has a lot to look forward to, as a talented group of young ladies will join forces in the coming years.

Both teams finished 13-1 this season and can claim themselves to be conference champions. And after watching these teams battle twice; this is EXACTLY how this should have turned out. Great game LADIES!!!

  1. Both the NW middle and Kernodle teams have and have had some great talent over the pass couple of years. The most recent top talent has been going to Greensboro Day School. Just think how much better NW would have been if players like Caroline Spur and Tamera Thorpe had stayed in the public school system instead of going to a private school. The private schools simply have more opportunities for these kids than what NW can compete with. The private schools can play 30-35 games vs 22 or so for a public school. The private schools can go play better competition in other cities and states instead of just playing local teams. Schools like NW have done well this year but you have got to wonder how much longer these programs can continue to produce solid years without keeping these recent loss of players to the private schools.

  2. Mendenhall Lady Mustangs play Aycock today at Page High School…game was moved from yesterday to today. Lady Mustangs are currently 13-0 and looking to finish season undefeated this year and win conference for 2nd year in a row. Are there any other undefeated middle school girls teams out there this year?

  3. The NW girls played great. Ms. Thomas did a wonderful job with the team this year. It was a great atmosphere for a middle school game. All the NW players are to be commended. The starting five was excellent and the subs did a good job when they got in the game. I expect we will see a lot of them in the future playing at the high school.

  4. Good back-and-forth game. KMS got in foul trouble early on some calls that were questionable. That was the difference maker. But regardless, a team has to take advantage of a situation when it’s presented and that’s what NW did. So hats off to them.

I know of 3 KMS starters that will attend NW high school and of course all the NW starters will go to NW… or at least that’s likely their district. 1 KMS starter and 1 KMS active bench sub will go to Western. Western will also pick up a very good forward from Guilford Middle along with a KMS girl who plays AAU but was iineligible this season.

So the NW-Western rivalry looks to be well fueled for the immediate future!

  5. Never seen a middle school girls game, much less watched more than 5 minutes of a grown woman’s game. Watching hair grow seems more exciting. Undefeated teams in girls basketball is like being the tallest person in a room full of midgets. Most people would agree.

  6. To “Bart” – why are you so interested in making a comment about girls basketball when you do not even watch ? why are you reading about when you do not even like it? you appear to be one of those “weird” guys peeking into the girls locker room or some little girls window from across the street. if the subject matter does not agree with your high standards, then just go back to your mom’s closet and pull out your unwrapped 1980’s playboy. don’t waste the time of others with stupid comments when you don’t even know anything about the players or even care about the sport. this area does produce some great play and players. NW and Kernodle both have and continue to produce great talent for guilford county.
