In the opening round of the Piedmont Triad 4A Conference Tournament, the bitter
rivals of Ragsdale and Southest faced off. The teams split the regular season series
so each squad came into tonight’s contest looking to win the big post season
matchup. Southwest came out strong going up 19-9. But heated rivalries don’t go down
easily, especially in the post season. The Tigers came storming back to take a 23-21
lead after the first. The second quarter was Ragsdale’s turn to seize momentum as
they got up by as many as 9 twice in the frame including 37-29 with roughly 2:30 to
go in the half. The Cowboys began chipping away and got within 4 but a bucket just
before the buzzer to put the halfway mark at 41-35 in favor of the Tigers behind
Stepp’s 14 first half points. The second half began with a quick 4 point spurt by
the Cowboys but Ragsdale took control again by slowing the game down. Costly missed
opportunities and missed looks by the Cowboys allowed the Tigers to go up by 10
(51-41)by the 5:30 mark. Southwest once again tried to claw away and by the 3:45
mark it was down to 54-51. The Tigers did everything they could to stop the bleeding
and held possession for the next 2:26. After a Tiger basket and a Cowboy free-throw
it was 56-52 with roughly a minute to play in the frame. Southwest scored six
straight to go up 58-56, but a layup just before the buzzer tied it up at 58 going
into the final quarter. The final frame started out back and forth as there was 7
lead changes in the first 4:00 minutes. Southwest took the lead at 68-67 on a basket
and then came up with a huge defensive stop and two straight bombs pushed it to
74-67 at the 3:40 mark. Ragsdale managed to hit some key baskets to keep it
interesting but again a huge 3 point play and timely free- throw shooting helped the
Cowboys hold on and advance with an 86-81 victory. Ragsdale was lead by James Stepp
(22), Daniel Kanakanui (13), and Jarratt Holland (13). Southwest was spear headed by
the likes of Jordan Hanner (28), Brandon Clyburn (19 Pts, 7 Rebs, 9 Blks, and 4
Asts), Herbie Bridges (14 Pts, 4 Asts), and Braxton Daye (10).

  1. Ragsdale basketball finally comes to an end in 2012. the boys fought hard but someone finally shot that horse and put it out of it’s misery.

Clyburn does look good. he should play at the next level.
